Chapter 55: A WARNING
As they stepped out of their car, guards swiftly surrounded them. Julian moved to grab Astrid’s hand, but Mattie swiftly intervened, jumping between them and wrapping her hands around his arm.
"Hey, Babe... thanks for bringing me here," Mattie sang, as she pulled Julian into the clubhouse before he could say more.
Astrid’s gaze lingered on Julian, her expression uncertain. She felt sad the way she pulled him inside and he didn’t bother looking back.
Then she heard Miles’s reassuring voice behind her.
"Hey... I am here," Miles said, his deep tone calming.
A small smile crept onto Astrid’s face as she turned to Miles as he led her inside.
Stephan followed closely, his hands tucked into his pockets, his eyes trailing behind them.
He felt a peculiar hole in his chest, hurting him badly.
As they entered, the crowd’s attention shifted to them. "See, it’s the Logans and Adams," someone shouted, and the group cheered.
They all made their way to the VIP section, Astrid’s hand wrapped securely around Miles’s as if she would be ripped off his arm anytime soon.
They walked past people smooching one another smelling of sweat and alcohol.
Her eyes widened, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings. She felt lost, overwhelmed by the sights and sounds.
Julian’s eyes narrowed, observing Astrid’s closeness to Miles.
She rarely showed him affection, usually reserving an irked expression for him.
"Gorgeous," Miles whispered behind her ear, his warm breath sending shivers down her spine.
Julian’s jaw clenched, his eyes flashing with possessiveness.
"Let’s take our seats," Miles suggested, guiding Astrid to her chair. "What would you like to drink?"
As the others ordered their drinks, Julian interrupted before Astrid could respond. "She doesn’t drink stuff like that, she will pass."
Mattie’s eyes flashed with irritation. She had only said it once in his presence and he didn’t forget about it again.
"Let’s go dance, Julian," she said, tugging him away, not wanting him closer to Astrid.
Astrid’s gaze followed their movement, her expression silent.
Miles reclaimed her attention. "Hey."
Astrid turned to him, inquiring.
"You two look nothing alike," she observed.
Miles smiled wryly. "I get that a lot."
Stephan slammed his glass on the table, drawing attention.
Miles began to speak, but his phone rang, and he excused himself.
"I’ll be right back," Miles said, his eyes locking onto Astrid’s before he stepped away.
Astrid’s gaze lingered on Miles’s retreating figure, her thoughts swirling with fear.
Astrid didn’t feel too comfortable with this, if Julian was around she wouldn’t be scared but seeing just Stephan her heart thumped severally wondering the kind of weird game he was going to play this time round.
Stephan’s gaze pierced through Astrid’s facade, his voice low and probing. "Still isn’t over him yet?"
Astrid’s smile faltered, and she averted her eyes, attempting to avoid his gaze. She had been hoping not to see Stephan since that dreadful night.
"Over him?" Astrid repeated, feigning ignorance.
Stephan’s eyes narrowed, his expression skeptical. He rose from his seat.
Astrid’s pulse quickened as Stephan strode closer, his presence suffocating. "We both know who I am talking about," he said, his voice cold.
Stephan settled beside her, his eyes tracking every twitch of her body.
Astrid’s nervousness spiked as he grasped her hands, pulling them out from beneath her jacket.
"Aren’t you feeling hot?" Stephan asked, his breath whispering against her skin.
Astrid recoiled, yanking her hands free. "Stay away from me, please." Her voice trembled, betraying her growing unease.
Stephan’s gaze lingered on her, his eyes burning with intensity.
"You were so close to Miles..." His voice trailed off.
Astrid’s cheeks flushed, and she shot back, "Miles isn’t a douchebag like you." Her words were a desperate attempt to push Stephan’s away.
Before Stephan could respond, his eyes flashed with anger, and he leaned in, the stench of alcohol wafting from his mouth. Astrid’s stomach churned.
"You think you’re too good for me?" Stephan sneered, his words dripping with malice. "You’re just a tease, Astrid. You think you can play with guys’ feelings and get away with it?"
"I never played with anyone.."
"Yes... you can’t because you are just a fat ugly duck, who is lucky to get into our world." Stephan fired as her eyes welled up with tears as Stephan’s verbal abuse hit her real hard.
"Let me go," she cried out, struggling with him.
Just as Stephan’s grip on her arm tightened, a firm hand clamped onto his shoulder, spinning him around.
"What the fuck!" Stephan snarled, ready to lash out.
Then his gaze locked onto Julian’s furious face, and for an instant, Stephan’s aggression faltered.
"Back off, Stephan," Julian warned, his voice low and menacing.
Stephan’s eyes flashed with resistance, but Julian’s unwavering stance made him retreat, his parting glance at Astrid filled with venom.
Astrid’s shoulders sagged in relief as Julian’s protective arm enveloped her.
"Are you okay?" Julian asked, his voice softening.
Astrid nodded, still shaken. "Thank you," she whispered.
Julian’s gaze lingered on hers, his expression a mix of concern and possessiveness.
Miles returned, his eyes scanning the tense scene. "What happened?"
Julian’s jaw clenched."She is uncomfortable with you, learn to let her be when she says so." Julian let out his voice so cold and eerie.
He had seen the way she was trying to avoid him right from the dance floor, not able to continue watching it he stormed toward them.
"Babe, going home because of her," Mattie asked with an irritation laced on her face.
Astrid feels sad that she is about to cause another fight between them.
"I am fine, just wasn’t feeling comfortable with the clubhouse, it isn’t Stephan’s fault." she defended and Julian’s fist clenched at this.
"Sorry man, just didn’t know she is important to you, since you have your fiance with you," he stated and a pang cut through her heart.
"She has the title added to her even though I didn’t want her, the least you could do was give her that respect," Julian grumbled.
"Relax dude, it wasn’t that much." Stephan tries cooling him down only then does Julian notice he is getting more than furious.
"Let’s leave... I am tired... Stephan can bring you back when you are fine." Astrid eyes widened at this, knowing Mattie would be so mad.
"I am not tired!" she exclaimed, startling them all.
Fine, she wanted to go home right from the minute she got to this clubhouse, but that doesn’t mean she should get herself in trouble.
"Hey... Gorgeous you don’t have to force yourself, you should go home we will bring Mattie." Miles announced
Mattie was about to say something when Mattie pulled her toward him forcefully.
"But... they.." Miles gestured for Astrid to stop talking as he gestured for Julian to take her home, already.
She wanted to refuse but Julian pulled her along with him roughly.
The moment their gaze was off-limit, Miles turned to Mattie the smile on his face disappeared and was now as cold as ice.
"Hey, you should support your sister," Mattie said, her voice laced with concern.
However, Miles’s grip on her wrist tightened, his fingers digging deep into her skin.
"’Aww, that hurts,’" Mattie groaned, her face contorting in pain.
Miles released her abruptly, his eyes locked onto Stephan’s smirking face.
"Man, relax, I know you’re beginning to fall for the girl. You can have her after a year," Miles said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
Stephan’s smirk vanished as Miles’s fist connected with his jaw, sending him stumbling back.
"Miles!" Mattie yelled, shocked, rushing to his side to help him up.
The altercation drew attention, cameras flashing as onlookers snapped photos of the rare sight of powerful men engaging in a physical fight.
"Why hurt your friend because of that whoring, husband-snatching bitch?" Mattie spat venom in her voice.
Miles’s expression twisted into a sly smile as he pulled Mattie roughly toward him.
"At least she’s better than you," he whispered.
Mattie felt a stinging pain as if Miles’s words had ripped a part of her heart out.
"A model coming to the clubhouse, dancing like a stripper, getting drunk..." Miles’s voice trailed off, his head resting on Mattie’s shoulder.
"You are still in line with your job activities because of Julian, remember if he gets tired, you going down."
Mattie struggled to break free from Miles’s grasp, but his hold remained unyielding.
"Miles," Stephan called out, caution in his voice.
Miles’s gaze silenced Stephan, his eyes flashing with warning.
"I want to do one good thing for my best friend. So don’t blame me if I don’t support you anymore,"
"What?"
Miles pushed Mattie away, leaving her in shock. Then his gaze shifted to Stephan.
Miles smirked as he strutted toward him, slowly. "That is why I am going to give you a warning tonight," he stopped in front of Stephan, head to head with him.
"The next time I see you so close to her or even breathe closer to her, I promise you, I will do worse to you." Then Miles stormed out of the room, leaving them speechless.
