Chapter 248: WHO IS HER REAL DAD?
Zach and Tonia sat in the waiting room still waiting for the report from the doctor regarding the DNA result.
Zach noticed how Tonia had been acting weird and he kept hoping it wasn’t what he was thinking.
Finally, after what seemed like hours, the doctor walked out handing them the DNA report.
He snatched it from the doctor and he bowed before leaving, allowing the family to have their private time to themselves.
Zach’s eyes glanced through the file reading every piece of it and got the match percentage, his fist trembled as he read it, not even a percentage of their DNA match.
Zach was the first to break the silence, his eyes narrowing as he turned to Tonia. "What did you do?" he demanded in a very low voice as Miles snatched the report from them.
Tonia’s eyes widened in fear, and she shook her head, as she whispered. "No, it can’t be... I was sure Mattie was Zach’s baby... How come?"
Zach’s grip on Tonia’s arm tightened, his face inches from hers. "What do you mean by that?" he growled.
Tonia’s face twisted in fear, and she swallowed hard before speaking. "It’s all Josh’s fault," she stammered.
Zach’s eyes widened in shock. "How is Josh involved in our child’s life?" he demanded. "I thought you met him months ago?"
Tonia’s eyes dropped, and she shook her head, her voice so low "I’m sorry, Zach... I wanted you to treat me like you treat Elizabeth... I wanted to be special to you."
Zach’s face darkened, his eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about, Tonia?" he growled.
Tonia took a deep breath before speaking, her words tumbling out in a rush.
"Elizabeth gave birth to a twin... Josh helped me steal one of the twins and give it to me... Later on, I changed my mind and I wanted my child, Zach.... I never knew Josh never switched back to my child."
The room fell silent, the only sound the heavy breathing of Zach, Maren, and Miles was not left out.
Zach’s face was a mask of shock and anger, while Miles looked like he had been punched in the gut. Tonia’s eyes were fixed on Zach, her face etched with fear and regret.
"How could you, Tonia?" Zach asked, almost breaking down. "How could you deceive me like this? Like you mean I have been with a child who isn’t mine for 24 whole years"
Tonia’s eyes welled up with tears, "I am sorry, Zach... I was desperate... I didn’t know what else to do."
Then Tonia’s eyes locked onto Miles, her voice filled with desperation. "I didn’t want another mile to happen," she said, her words hanging in the air as it dawned on her that another truth had been revealed.
Miles looked down, confused, "Mum? What are you talking about?"
Tonia’s gaze never wavered, her eyes boring into Miles’ very soul. "I tried my best to make you like me, to make you love me like a mother," she said, her voice cracking "But that void was never filled, no matter how hard I tried. I took care of you, I cared for you, but you never saw me as your mother."
Miles’ eyes widened, shock written across his face. "What are you talking about? I love you like a mother," he argued.
Tonia took a deep breath, her words spilling out in a rush. "When Zach and I got married, he was still in love with his first love, Elizabeth. He would drink and cheat on me, leaving me alone in the house. One of the women he slept with got pregnant, and we had no choice but to accept the child. I volunteered to take care of you, Miles, and that’s the only time Zach ever thought of stopping his infidelity."
Miles’ face contorted in shock, his eyes fixed on Tonia in horror. "You are not my biological mother?" he whispered.
Tonia’s eyes dropped, shame written across her face. "I never allowed you to know, Miles. I wanted Zach to love me, to care for me like he did for Elizabeth. But he never did. He cared for me, provided for me, but he never loved me, it was all because of you."
Zach’s face twisted in anger, "Don’t fucking try to change the topic here Tonia!"
You’re telling me that you slept with Landon, got pregnant, and then lied to me about it?" he spat.
"Tell me who the fuck is the father of the child? Why are you involved with Josh in the first place if you birthed your child."
Tonia sighed, she knew the whole truth would be revealed in a matter of time, "I was desperate, Zach. I was craving touch, craving love. And Landon made me feel alive."
Miles’ face was a mask of shock, "You’re crazy," he whispered. "You’re insane."
Zach shifted back at the amount of truth revealed, "So you are saying that even your real child ain’t mine?" Tonia looked down, sadly.
"I am so sorry,"
"As of now, the only child I recognize as mine is Miles," he spat. "I don’t want to see you in my life anymore, Tonia. You’re to await my lawyer for divorce proceedings."
Tonia’s eyes widened, shock written across her face. She grabbed Zach’s leg, shaking her head, pleading with him, "No Zach, we are way past this, I am at a great loss also, you can’t leave me now, even your first love isn’t.." her words trailed off when Zach slapped her hands from his legs.
"That is because you were the reason why Elizabeth never got married to me," he spat. "You are the reason why she ended up the way she did. You knew how much we loved each other, and yet you destroyed it. You made her go through hell, hiding and getting married to someone who didn’t deserve her love." His lips trembled in disgust, as he recalled when Elizabeth suddenly left without a last call or talk.
How his father forced him to get married, to not ruin Adam’s reputation, he should have fought for her, maybe he wouldn’t have lost her now.
Zach punched the wall infuriated while Miles could only watch, he never believed his mum would be this heartless, how would Mattie feel knowing all these when she woke up?
"Goodbye," with those last words, Zach stormed out and Tonia tried to call out to him, but he ignored her, leaving Miles heartbroken as he stared at his mother.
Miles knelt beside Tonia, "You said Mattie is Elizabeth’s daughter," he said, his voice shaking. "Does this mean that Astrid is Mattie’s twin?"
Tonia looked up at him, frustration etched on her face. "I don’t know," she answered.
Maren pushed forward, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Who is Astrid’s real father supposed to be?" she asked.
Tonia looked down, her eyes avoiding Maren’s gaze. "I don’t know," she repeated.
Miles’ eyes narrowed, his mind racing with possibilities. He recalled a conversation he once had with Mattie, about how she wasn’t allergic to milk like his mum made everyone believe
A sly smile spread across his face as he turned to Tonia. "I remember how you would always force Mattie to pretend that she’s allergic to milk," he said, "Was this so that Mattie would mix up with us?"
Tonia’s eyes widened, and she pulled her hands away from Miles. "I don’t understand what you’re saying," she stammered.
Miles’ eyes flashed with anger, and he grabbed Tonia’s hands, making her look at him.
"Mattie isn’t allergic to milk, but Astrid is," he said, his voice firm.
"Being allergic to milk is something passed down from the Adams family. Does this mean that Astrid is the daughter of Elizabeth and my father?"
Everyone turned mute at this. And then, they heard Astrid’s voice from behind,
"What?"
