Chapter 166: WINNING BACK HER HEART
Chapter 166: WINNING BACK HER HEART
Astrid pulled into her driveway, and as she prepared to exit the car, a message from Maren flashed on her phone.
She picked up her phone with the hope of tapping in telling her she wouldn’t be able to go to their girl’s night.
"Hey, girls! So sorry but I won’t be able to make it tonight," Maren texted. "I have got a ton of work to catch up on. Promise to make it up to you tomorrow?"
Astrid smiled a bit at this and quickly typed out a response. "No worries, Maren! I am fine with it. See you tomorrow!"
Astrid smiled, feeling a mix of understanding and slight disappointment. She knew Maren had been overwhelmed with work lately and she couldn’t begin to bore her with her life issues.
She needs to get her life fully back,
As she sat in the car, lost in thought, Astrid’s mind began to wander back to her earlier conversation with Mattie.
Her words still lingered, now that she was back with Julian she had no right with him anymore.
Astrid’s phone buzzed again, snapping her back to reality. She checked the message, and her eyes widened as she read the news alert: "High-Profile Couple’s Divorce Goes Viral!"
Astrid let out a deep sigh, knowing one way and all the other this news would go around and it was time she knew that she was out of the silly marriage shackles.
She clicked on it and just like she thought, the whole way how the marriage has been a mistake was written there.
She clicked on the comments section and they never disappointed, the so-called fans of Mattie abusing her and throwing hurtful comments.
Shaking off the feeling of unease, she turned off her phone so as not to receive any call.
She just wanted to be with herself tonight and bury herself in her sorrow.
As Astrid stepped out of the car and onto the driveway, the crunch of gravel beneath her feet echoed through the stillness of the night.
She gazed up at her mansion, its towering spires, and turrets reaching toward the moon like skeletal fingers.
The windows, once bright and welcoming, now stared back at her like empty eyes.
Astrid began to walk towards the entrance. But as she approached, she noticed something off.
The front door was open and she couldn’t help but wonder in silence what made it look that way.
She might not be in her right senses now, but she was very sure she locked this door before leaving for her grandfather’s and she didn’t even have any maids.
The wind chimes that hung from the porch ceiling were silent as if frozen in fear.
Astrid’s heart began to beat faster as she pushed open the creaky door. The foyer, once a warm and inviting space, was now shrouded in darkness.
The chandelier above her head was extinguished, casting long, ominous shadows across the walls.
"Hello?" Astrid called out, her voice trembling slightly. "Is anyone here?"
The only response was the creaking of the old wooden floorboards beneath her feet.
Astrid’s skin crawled as she fumbled for the light switch. But as she flipped it, nothing happened.
Astrid’s breath came in short gasps as she stumbled forward, her hands outstretched in front of her.
She bumped into a chair, sending it scraping across the floor. The sound echoed through the hallway, making her jump.
She took another step forward, her eyes straining to adjust to the darkness. And then, she heard it. A faint whisper, soft and raspy, seemed to caress her ear.
Astrid spun around, but there was no one there. The whisper seemed to come from all around her, echoing off the walls.
Her heart racing, Astrid stumbled forward, desperate to find a way out of the darkness. And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, everything stopped.
The whispering ceased, the creaking of the floorboards stopped, and the scent of decay vanished.
Astrid stood frozen, her chest heaving with fear. And then, in an instant, the lights flickered to life.
The entrance was bathed in warm, golden light, and Astrid’s eyes adjusted slowly to the brightness.
As she looked around, she saw Julian standing in front of her, a small smile playing on his lips.
But Astrid’s fear didn’t dissipate, anger brewed in her as she glared up at Julian.
"What the fuvk is your problem?" she yelled in tears, making him confused.
"Hey... what is wrong?" he asked, dropping the flower he held on the ground as he tried to help her up.
Astrid’s eyes blazed with anger as she grabbed Julian’s arms, her fingers digging deep into his skin.
"Why did you scare me like that?" she demanded, her voice shaking with rage as she stood on her feet.
Julian shrugged, a nonchalant smile playing on his lips. "I never did, when I came in I noticed your light isn’t working fine so I decided to help you with it," he answered, his eyes glinting with amusement.
"See... if you can’t stay here alone, then you should hire a maid, I can do that for you so you don’t feel lonely."
Astrid sighed out loud, as she rolled her eyes, as her mind went back to the news and also Mattie’s threat.
She slapped his hands away. "Don’t touch me!" she spat, her eyes flashing with warning. "Why are you here, anyway? Go back to your girl, so she can stop threatening me.
Julian’s smile never wavered. "I wanted to take you out on a date," he said, his voice low and smooth. "We need to talk, Astrid."
Astrid laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "You take me for a fool don’t you, why suddenly ask me out on a date when we divorced this morning already?" she cried out in frustration.
"But.." she cut him off immediately.
"You think I will go anywhere with you?" she sneered. "We are divorced, Julian. It’s over, there is nothing we can fall back to when the press tries to hold us off." Astrid walked past him and her eyes met with the flower on the ground.
She picked it up and glanced at Julian, "Who owned this?" Julian sighed with his hands in his pocket.
"Wanted to for once do something nice but I don’t know how to begin," Astrid stared at him with a bitter laugh as she moved toward him.
Gently she began pulling out the flower and throwing it at him, it was too much to do so she hit him with the flower no matter how he kept dodging but she proceeded till the whole flower was destroyed.
"Get out!" she ordered, and he looked at her feeling dejected, "You see these flowers on the ground? That is how my heart is shattered, enough of this, and get the fuck out of my life," she yelled, gesturing to the door but he didn’t move from where he stood.
She turned to leave and he pulled her back, "Don’t walk away please, you can do all sorts of things to me since I deserve it but don’t walk away."
Astrid scoffed, giving him a shocking gaze, "Excuse me? Isn’t the one you love Mattie?"
"I never said that ever since you came back Astrid, I told you I finally figured out my heart."
"But you signed the divorce paper without any argument," Julian’s hand ran through his hair as he blew out a rasp of air but Astrid continued.
"You even made Mattie the face of your company. You should go to the one you love, not me."
Julian’s smirk grew wider at this, "Didn’t you want your heart to stop getting confused?" he asked, his eyes glinting with challenge.
Astrid rolled her eyes, refusing to rise to the bait. "Just leave, Julian," she said, her voice cold and dismissive.
But Julian didn’t bulge. Instead, he pulled her closer, his eyes burning with intensity. Astrid struggled against him, but he held her fast.
"Let me go!" she shouted, smacking him hard on the chest.
"I once let this hand go last year. But I wouldn’t allow it to go this time around, take this as one of the methods I am going to use in getting back your heart.."
Julian released her, his eyes never leaving hers. "I will be back tomorrow," he said, his voice low and menacing.
"Don’t come back," Astrid spat.
Julian just smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "Your dinner is on the table, the dinner I owe you when I went to the hospital to check on her a year ago," he said, before turning and walking away, leaving Astrid shocked.
The moment he walked out of her mansion, She ran to the dining room, and lo and behold several dishes were there waiting for her.
She ran to the first plate and there was a paper on it, she picked it up reading it.
"I signed that paper so we can start over, we can’t proceed with a marriage everyone keeps talking about it being that of your cousin," she fluttered shocked at this.
She never in her million words thought about this, she had wanted him to say no when she took the divorce paper to him since that was the only grasp she had with him.
She was furious that her heart hurt so badly, she had never known he had other plans.
