Chapter 162: EMBARRASSING HER
Chapter 162: EMBARRASSING HER
Astrid stood in front of her mirror, staring at her reflection as she dressed up.
The memory of Julian signing the divorce papers without a word still lingered, leaving her speechless and sad.
She sighed for the hundredth time and then picked up the divorce paper with the thought of dropping it in the marriage registry.
She felt it was time to move on, and her grandfather’s timely invitation to visit his company was a welcome distraction.
As she applied her makeup, tears pricked at the corners of her eyes for the hundredth time.
She quickly dubbed them away, not wanting to ruin her makeup. Despite her efforts to manage her emotions, the pain still felt raw.
She had made him sign the papers after he did what she wanted. She had regretted her action, but it was the only way to free herself up from the sudden pain.
Just then, her phone rang, breaking the silence. She picked it up, and Maren’s warm voice filled her ears.
"Hey, baby girl," Maren said, her tone cheerful. "What’s up?"
Astrid’s response was subdued, her voice barely above a whisper. "Hey, Maren...not much."
Maren’s tone immediately shifted to concern. "Astrid, what’s wrong? You sound sad." she let out worriedly, she should have gone to Astrid place in the morning but she got a sudden call and was needed in the office immediately.
Astrid took a deep breath, trying to hold back tears. "It’s just...Julian and I... we’ve finally got a divorce."
Maren’s voice was filled with empathy. "Oh, Astrid, I’m so sorry. I had no idea.... How? We never planned for it to go this way," Maren let out in confusion, not knowing exactly what to say to her friend to help with her pain.
Astrid’s voice cracked as she spoke, "He just signed the papers without even saying a word. It feels like he’s already moved on, he gets tired of my craziness."
"Astrid, you deserve so much better than someone who doesn’t appreciate you." Astrid looked down silently.
"You know what?" Maren’s voice suddenly felt cheerful.
"Let’s go out and have some fun tonight." Astrid eyes widened recalling what had occurred the previous night.
"No, I am still not over the banging headache," Astrid confessed, this time there would be no one to take care of her, she can’t take risks.
"No drinks, I promise. We will just have a blast." Maren assured her.
Astrid hesitated, unsure if she was up for a night out. Besides she is going to her grandfather
"I don’t know, Maren...I’m supposed to visit my grandfather’s company today," Astrid said, her voice still laced with sadness.
"That’s great, Astrid! Spending time with your grandfather will be good for you. And don’t worry about tonight, we can catch up soon." Maren’s tone was reassuring.
Astrid felt a small smile on her face, grateful for Maren’s understanding.
"Thanks, Maren. Just talking to you makes me feel a little better," Astrid said, her voice sincere.
"Anytime, baby girl. Remember, you’re strong and capable. You will get through this, and you’ll come out even stronger on the other side." Maren’s tone was warm, as she tried to make her friend feel relieved.
Astrid felt a lump form in her throat as she listened to Maren’s words of encouragement. She knew she could always count on Maren to be there for her.
"Thanks, Maren. I will talk to you soon," Astrid said, her voice filled with gratitude.
"Take care, Astrid. Bye for now," Maren said, before hanging up the phone.
**********
Astrid walked into her grandfather’s company, feeling a mix of emotions. She approached the reception desk, where two elegant women with poised smiles greeted her.
"Welcome to Gilbert Enterprises," one of them said. "How may we assist you today?"
Astrid smiled confidently. "I am here to see my grandfather, please."
The two women exchanged a skeptical glance before responding to her. "I’m afraid we don’t know who you are," one of them said with a polite smile.
Astrid’s confidence begins to wane at this, not everyone knows her to be the Gilbert granddaughter, she is also not answering that name because he is from her maternal side.
"I am Astrid... Lo..." she stopped recalling she had divorced, "I am Astrid, you call to ask," she corrected herself.
The women laughed, their smiles now tinged with amusement. "I am
Ma’am, but he is in a meeting and we can’t halt that because of your silly request when you don’t even know the last name to add to your name," The little hope she came crashing down.
Their voices are becoming too loud and attaining attention from others, the last thing she was to do today was cause a scene.
"But, you don’t expect me to just come here and lie about that shit," she announced.
"The only granddaughter we know is ma’am Mattie," one of them said.
Astrid tried to explain, but the woman cut her off. "I’m afraid you must be mistaken. Can you please tell us your right name?"
Astrid felt embarrassed she already told them why asking again. "Astrid Daniels."
The women’s expressions turned skeptical. "I’m afraid we don’t recognize that name," one of them said firmly.
Astrid pulled out her phone and tried to call her grandfather, but he didn’t pick up. Despite the continuous calling, she should have let him know the time she would be coming, she thought in regret.
The women exchanged a knowing glance. "I think it’s time for you to leave," one of them said, their tone now firm.
Astrid felt a surge of frustration, "But... the last thing you can do is confirm or maybe allow me to wait till he is done with his meeting." Astrid tried convincing them.
"Oh please, I am not about to lose my job for the likes of you." the lady leg out.
She quickly dialed the security unit and Astrid was irked by this, why was she continuously being picked on and treated like garbage even after months of her trying to pick herself up?
"Come throw a nuisance out of the company right now," the lady said to the phone.
"Wow! This is so wrong and unethical of you," Astrid let out Just as the guards approached.
Astrid locked gaze with Mattie, she sighed in relief hoping Mattie would even vouch for her even though she only had 10% hope she would.
"Ma’am Mattie!" one of the women exclaimed as Mattie strolled toward them.
"Good day everyone," Mattie greeted and they all showed courtesy, leaving Astrid astounded.
"This young woman claims to be your sister," they exclaimed, giving Astrid bad eyes.
Mattie’s gaze swept over Astrid before responding. "I don’t have a sister," she said with a sweet smile. "I have a brother, or are you so blind that you want me to explain things to you."
The women’s faces turned bright red as they apologized profusely. "We are so sorry we will send the impersonator out now!" They apologized.
Mattie turned to Astrid, her smile now tinged with condescension, staring at her dressing she smirked.
"You can never be on my level," Mattie whispered, her voice dripping with disdain, before walking off with an air of superiority.
Astries cracked and the guards reached out to touch her, "Don’t make a mistake you will regret," she said, her voice firm.
The girls snickered, but the guards hesitated. "Then get out of this company if you don’t want more embarrassment!" the ladies yelled at her this time attention had been drawn to their direction.
Astrid, having no other choice, turned to leave when she saw, Mr. Jerkins emerge from the elevator, his eyes scanning the scene before him.
"Who dares to touch Gilbert wrongly?" he thundered, his voice echoing through the reception area.
The guards took a step back, looking sheepish. Mr. Jerkins turned to Astrid, his expression apologetic. "I am so sorry, young miss. Please, accept my apologies. The Chairman was in a meeting."
"Young miss," the ladies asked themselves as they stated in confusion.
Astrid’s annoyance flared. She wasn’t ready to continue living her life as a doormat, allowing people to walk all over her.
She turned to the girls, her eyes blazing. "If you had listened, I would have explained. But you thought you could embarrass me."
Then, she turned to Mr. Jerkins. "I think it’s time for these ladies to be fired, don’t you?"
The girls’ eyes widened in horror as they rushed toward Astrid, but the guards held them back not wanting to lose their jobs also.
"We are so sorry Young miss, we were only doing our job, please forgive us," they both fell on their knees pleading for forgiveness.
Astrid laughed out loud, and then her voice turned icy. "If you touch me, I will make sure you sleep in prison. And as for your punishment," she turned to the girls, "you’re fired."
"What! Ma’am! Please you can’t... we are sorry! Ma’am Mattie has made us believe you are not." they both cried out.
"Next time try to be nice maybe this wouldn’t be your fate,"
With that, she turned and walked away, leaving the guards to escort the girls out of the company as Mr. Jerkins guarded her to the elevator.
