Chapter 135: YOU ARE FROM MY BLOODLINE
Donald a seventy-plus-year-old man, is left in shock at the news and comes down to the hospital immediately he hears about the news of the death of his daughter.
"Where is she?" he asked and they pointed to the morgue.
Donald burst into the morgue, the chill of the cold room enveloping him. His eyes scanned the space, taking in the rows of steel drawers where bodies were stored.
His gaze finally landed on a single stretcher in the center of the room, where his daughter’s lifeless body lay.
She was covered in a white sheet, her face pale and still. Donald’s heart ached as he approached the stretcher, his eyes fixed on his daughter’s face. His fist clenched tight as he tried to hold back tears.
He reached out a trembling hand and gently placed it on her arm. "I am sorry," he whispered, his voice cracking with sadly. He shut his eyes, the pain of losing her overwhelming.
Just then, Tonia walked in, "Dad, I am done with all the necessary materials..." She stopped, noticing her father’s gesture to for her keep quiet and leave.
"Dad?" she asked, confusion etched on her face.
"Can’t you at least give your elder sister one last respect?" he asked and she looked down sadly.
"Leave," she looked up at her father.
"I said get the fuck out before I lose it," Donald yelled, his voice echoing through the morgue.
Tonia stood still for a moment before apologizing and walking out.
The morgue fell silent again, the cold atmosphere weighing heavily on Donald. He recalled his daughter’s last words before she left twenty-five years ago.
"I hope you will have it in your heart to forgive me when you find out that I am gone, but I wasn’t able to stop my sister from... having a better heart." Her words echoed in his mind as he stood there, frozen in grief.
Suddenly, a faint memory resurfaced, a memory of his daughter’s face, her smile, and her laughter.
Donald’s eyes snapped open, and he gazed at his daughter’s lifeless body, a mix of emotions swirling inside him.
Donald’s eyes scanned his daughter’s lifeless body, taking in her features. His gaze landed on a red mark around her neck.
"It’s a strangling mark..." he thought to himself, a sense of unease settling in.
He didn’t want to have a wrong feeling about it, he wanted to believe that her death was due to the illness she was suffering from.
He took a deep breath and walked out of the morgue, his eyes fixed on the floor. The others were waiting for him outside, their faces somber.
"Mr. Gilbert..." the doctor began, but Donald raised his hand, silencing him.
"The funeral won’t be held now," Donald announced, his voice firm. "I want to see the CCTV footage of her last minutes before death."
Becky stepped forward, a small smile on her face. "I requested that already," she said, her voice soft.
Donald nodded, still reeling from the thought of losing his child and also his suspicions as they met with that of Tonia. It
"Mr. Gilbert, she has a daughter left in my care," Becky continued. "I don’t know if you would want to meet her."
Donald’s head snapped up, shock etched on his face. "What? You mean I have a granddaughter?" he asked, his voice trembling.
Tonia clenched her fist, her eyes narrowing. Mattie bit her tongue, her face twisted in anger.
She wanted to kill Becky off, not for her grandfather to know about him having another granddaughter, but because her plans were going south.
Becky smirked, a triumphant glint in her eye. "Yes, Mr. Gilbert..." she announced.
Donald’s face lit up with determination. "I want to see her now!" he declared.
Becky’s smile grew wider. "Of course, Mr. Gilbert," she said, now gesturing to the room where Astrid lay sleeping peacefully on her bed.
As Donald followed Becky, Tonia, and Mattie exchanged a worried glance. Their plans were unraveling, and they needed to act fast.
Maren sat beside her still in surprise at the fact, That Becky has a lot of truth hidden in her when it comes to the marriage.
Just then the door opened and Donald walked inside, his eyes gazing over the sleepy lady.
Maren on the other hand sat beside Astrid and quickly stood up and shifted back, she had known he was her grandfather.
The surprise is that Astrid has always thought she is a poor girl when one of the generational rich families is her grandfather.
His leg strutted toward her gently, and then that bitterness in his eyes left. "She left me a gift," he whispered.
She didn’t just leave but left me a whole human to represent her, in her absence.
Maren’s gaze locked Mattie and she could see the anger brewing in her eyes.
Donald’s eyes widened as he gazed at his granddaughter, Astrid. He touched her softly, as if she were an egg, his fingers trembling with emotion.
"Why is she here?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Maren stepped forward to explain, but Tonia quickly cut her off. "She is still affected by the shock of losing her mother, so..." Tonia’s voice trailed off as Donald’s expression turned skeptical.
He smirked, his eyes narrowing. "I had planned to delay the funeral because I wanted her to be strong enough to attend," she added.
Tonia’s eyes darted nervously around the room before settling on her father’s face.
"Are you sure you are not so happy about your sister’s disappearance?" Donald’s words cut deep, and Tonia swallowed hard.
"Dad... I only just found out," Tonia stammered, her voice trembling. "You can ask them, I never knew I had a niece."
Donald’s expression turned cold, his eyes flashing with anger. "I wouldn’t have known anything if Becky hadn’t called me," he spat.
"I expected the first thing for you to do when you found out about her was to call me, her father, who had suffered a great shock at the thought of losing my daughter."
Tonia’s face crumpled, and she looked away, unable to meet her father’s accusing gaze.
"I... I am sorry Dad, I didn’t expect it...." just then a little groaning sound could be heard from Astrid.
The whole room went silent at once at the sound she made, after some while her eyes opened and they were staring down at the people standing before her.
Like Dr. Lee had advised Julian wasn’t anywhere close by and had stood outside not coming inside with them.
"Mum.." she whispered and Maren ran toward her hoping she wouldn’t have another episode again, "Astrid.. you..." but Donald stopped her and moved forward.
Astrid eyes met with him. She had that weird feeling as she gazed at him. Even though she hadn’t seen him before she had that close feeling at the moment their eyes met.
"Who are you?" She asked and he let out a small smile, squatting to her level gently
"You look just like her," he announced, a big smile laced on his lips.
"Wh.. what?"
"You are my granddaughter, my love, you... are a Gilbert, you are from my bloodline."
