Chapter 100: HOSPITAL SAGA

Chapter 100: HOSPITAL SAGA

Julian burst into the hospital room, responding to Mattie’s urgent calls.

"What’s wrong? Why..." he trailed off, taken aback by Mattie’s distraught expression.

"Julian..." Mattie’s voice trembled as she stretched out her arms, tears streaming down her face.

Julian’s eyes widened in surprise; he hadn’t expected such an emotional reception.

As Mattie grasped his hands, Julian attempted to gently pry her fingers loose.

Tonia and Zach stood there frustrated at the whole scene.

"Mattie, what’s going on? Why the sudden call? We have already broken up," he declared, trying to sound calm despite his growing unease.

Mattie’s tears abruptly ceased, replaced by confusion. "Break up?" she repeated, her voice laced with disbelief.

"But we... We were planning our wedding. How can we break up?" Julian recoiled, startled by her reaction.

The room fell silent, with Mattie’s parents exchanging worried glances. Julian’s eyes darted between them, seeking an explanation.

"What do you mean?" Mattie’s voice rose, her words tinged with desperation.

"Is something wrong? Are you joking with me?" She directed her gaze at her parents, who shook their heads in unison.

Tonia stepped forward, her expression somber. "Mattie suffers from transient amnesia. She’s lost approximately half of her memories."

Julian’s eyes bulged in shock. "Transient amnesia?" he echoed, his mind racing.

Mattie’s grip on his hands tightened. "Ju... Julian... we can’t break up. We love each other. You do love me, don’t you?" Her voice cracked, and Julian’s resolve began to crumble.

"No... no... Please don’t leave me," Mattie pleaded, her words escalating into a wail.

Julian’s face contorted in distress as Mattie’s anguish intensified. "But.."

"You lied to me! You used me! Now you want to break up? No!"

Mattie’s voice shattered into a scream, her body shaking violently. She flailed her arms wildly as if trying to physically hold onto Julian.

Julian’s eyes darted around the room, searching for assistance. Mattie’s parents exchanged worried glances, while Tonia stepped forward, a calming presence.

"Mattie, honey, please calm down," Tonia soothed, gently prying Mattie’s fingers from Julian’s.

"Mattie, I..." Julian’s voice faltered, uncertainty gripping him.

Mattie’s gaze locked onto his, pleading. "Don’t leave me, Julian. I love you. I need you."

Julian’s heart wrenched, torn between his decision to end their relationship and Mattie’s evident distress.

Just then Stephan walked inside almost immediately seeing her state, "Hey... you what have you done!.."

"No! I hate you all, you know how much I love Julian now you are in support of our break up!" Julian was left in disarray.

He was frustrated, here he was trying to navigate his heart, "He hates me!" she thrashed around in pain, her hands moving to get to her heart like she was trying to nurse the pain in her heart.

Just then her beeping matching began to make a sound.

"Oh my goodness! Mattie!" Tonia cried out and Stephan went closer to her, "She is going into cardiac arrest.." Julian’s eyes widened, and he froze in shock as she stared at Mattie.

Fighting for her life, it’s the first time he has seen her in this position, and he is the reason why she is in it.

As the medical team rushed into the room, a nurse gently but firmly guided Julian and the parents out. "You need to stay outside," she said.

Julian stood frozen, staring at the door, his mind reeling with concern for Mattie.

Miles approached him, a knowing glint in his eye. "Guess you still have feelings for my sister." Julian’s gaze snapped to Miles, his expression tense.

"You’re hoping that’s true, aren’t you, so you can be with Astrid?" Julian asked.

"Yup," he responded, patting Julian’s shoulder with a sly smile. Julian’s anger simmered, but he kept it in check.

"We both know how much I don’t care about my sister, but sadly, that’s how I feel," Miles continued his voice

"Weirdly I am sad she’s going through this." Julian seethed inwardly, his heart pounding in his chest as he stared at the door.

A few minutes passed before the doctor emerged from the hospital room.

"Doctor, how is she?" Tonia asked anxiously.

"Mattie’s suffering from amnesia," the doctor explained. "It’s crucial we don’t force her to recall memories. Let her be with the person she is with and help trigger her recollections."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"

"Playing along with her delusions will aid her recovery. If you keep forcing memories, it could cause further brain damage."

Tonia’s face contorted in horror. "Brain damage? How did my daughter get to this.?"

"You!" Tonia let out as she lunged at Julian, fury in her eyes, but Miles quickly intervened, blocking her path.

"You son of a gun!" Tonia shouted, her voice echoing down the hallway.

Miles stopped her, his voice calm. "Let’s focus on Mattie’s recovery, Mom."

"No! This bastard!"

"Mum, be calm Julian didn’t cause her accident," Miles yelled at his mum interrupting her and making Tonia shift back seeing the tone he used.

She could tell he meant something else and was giving her a warning, she swallowed hard at this.

"Doctors, how is she now?" Miles asked not facing Stephen, he still has zero trust in him.

"She is going to be fine, just needs a few days of bed rest." The doctor responded and nodded his head.

"Can we go see her now?"

"Yeah, you can but I will advise the person she wants to see most should be the one by her side so she can recover quickly."

Miles took a deep breath knowing Julian would be the one she wanted. He didn’t have a good bond with her so he could never take that place.

The doctors bowed and all left including Stephan after giving Julian a small part on his shoulder.

"Don’t come inside," Tonia let out, seeing Julian wanted to go in, and then Miles moved forward.

"Mum, Mattie is going to be fine, even though they broke up, he agreed to stay with her. You don’t have to get mad at everything."

"Miles, you should be a supportive sister, for goodness sake."

"Yes I am but he’s married, Mum. He has a wife. Don’t you think being with her tonight means a lot to him?" Miles asked, his voice measured.

Tonia’s gaze lingered on Julian, her expression unreadable. "What?"

"Mum, please... let’s end this here," Miles intervened, his voice firm.

Julian sighed and then Tonia nodded curtly, and the group stepped aside, allowing Julian to approach Mattie’s hospital bed.

Mattie lay frail, her leg bandaged from the attack, her head wrapped in a gauze. Julian’s heart twisted, seeing her vulnerable.

He took Mattie’s hand, and his eyes locked on hers. Tonia stood opposite him, her face etched with worry and anger.

"This is all because of you, Julian," Tonia’s voice trembled. "We only asked Mattie to drive out because of you. And now..."

Julian’s thoughts drifted, consumed by guilt. He had promised Astrid dinner, but Mattie’s call had interrupted, and he’d forgotten everything.

As he caressed Mattie’s palm, his mind wandered to Astrid. What would she think if she saw him here?
