Chapter 97: Mutation (3)

He was going to make it, but his whole body was writhing in pain. It was awful, Light felt perhaps the worst pain he had ever felt when every bone from his knee to his hip suddenly cracked and shattered into pieces.

He felt as if tens of thousands of needles were going in and out of his body, and in some areas, he was even being stabbed constantly.

It was a strange and disgusting sight, Light was literally writhing on the floor.

His upper body sometimes looked as if it had no bones and only skin.

It wasn’t even his neck yet, and if he felt something like that now, what would happen when that time came?

Perhaps when the time came for the neck to mutate, Light would indeed die, it was chilling to think about it.

So he thought shouldn’t think about that now though, his body was still able to hold on, everything was still intact and he was still conscious.

Strangely, he realised that he could breathe.

He had thought that he was still alive because his throat was completely filled with blood, but his whole body was strangely filled with oxygen.

Light’s skin was literally taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide to the outside. It was incredibly strange, but Light had more serious things to do than complaining and wondering how such a thing was possible.

For a few minutes, when his hip recovered, nothing happened, everything was normal and Light managed to wait properly.

The internal bleeding had stopped and he had vomited out litres of blood, at which point he had managed to breathe on his own and was lying on his back resting when another message came through the system:

[Sir, what follows will make the pain you have felt so far seem like child’s play, that’s why I have to get your authorisation. Since your cells are changing your muscle and bone cells are also undergoing the same change.

I will continue with your permission, but... Even if you are not really in danger of death, you may suffer psychological damage.

This pain...I won’t lie, it’s more than you can bear].

When Light saw what was written in the system window, he took a deep breath and then asked only this question:

"How long will it take?"

When Light asked this question, no message appeared in front of him, as if the system itself was hesitant to answer this question.

"Answer me, system..." Light added.

[Exactly 15 minutes, sir. If you can hold out, I swear to you that you will approach the power to kill even Tier 4 Mutants with your bare hands. You can only hold them right now, you threw dozens of punches at that mutant zombie, but it didn’t die even that way. I swear it’s only 15 minutes, all it to get stronger.].

It was as if the system was begging Light, and Light of course had no reason to refuse, after all, he also wished to do his best to get stronger.

"Fifteen minutes, huh? What if I’m close to death, will you stop the procedure?" Light questioned, and the answer to his question was formed in front of him the moment he asked the question:

[Of course sir, I am more concerned with strengthening you and protecting your life than causing you to die.].

After this system window, Light took a deep breath and then said, "Alright, let’s start."

As soon as he said those words, he heard that deep heartbeat sound again and then the pain started again:

"ARGH!!!!"

Light shouted incredibly loudly and at that moment his lungs were filled with blood, every bit of blood was travelling up his throat and blood was pouring out of every hole in his neck.

Light could literally feel every bone in his upper body being constantly cracked and repaired. It was as if he was sitting on an elephant every five seconds, but not killing it and getting up.

This time there was no relaxing sensation, only pure pain and a truly unbelievable overwhelm.

Every second he could feel his muscles tensing and some of them even rupturing and reattaching themselves more firmly.

The strange thing was that he could actually feel every single thing that was happening.

Indeed, he somehow managed to feel every single thing that happened every single second.

One second he could feel his arm muscles tensing, his elbow being disconnected and reconnected, and another time he could feel his skull cracking and his eyes becoming close to popping out.

Light was sure that he would rather die fighting dozens of Tier 5 Mutant Obsidian Zombies right now than this pain.

Still, he could endure it, he could endure this unimaginable pain that came close to knocking him unconscious and then killing him.

He could see the numbers and the letters in the system window that kept rising in front of his eyes, he had to make it.

He should have lasted just one more minute, he kept counting in his mind despite all the pain. He counted every passing second, just a minute...no, he had to last even less than a minute, then everything would be over, the mutation would be over.

"Come on system!" he thought in his mind, his eyes had turned bloodshot, he could hardly see in front of him anymore, and he was unable to bear the pain.

His eyes had become incredibly heavy, and with less than half a minute left, his eyes were completely blind, the writhing in his body had now paused and everything had stabilised.

Light blinked despite all this and managed to see one last system window as blood continued to flow down his face:

[Mutation Success Probability: 200%

Mutation Success Award: Ex-Tier

Mutation Progression: 100%]

The mutation was complete.
