A Professor of Magic at Hogwarts -
Chapter 652: Wonders - (2)
Ginny rolled her eyes.
She had received some training materials on Apparition from Tonks a long time ago and knew a little bit about it. The general consensus was that while Disapparition coupled with rapid spellcasting was indeed an advanced dueling skill, it was often seen as flashy but impractical, as it was prone to errors. Once you splinched yourself, it was game over, and your opponent would laugh you off.
Not to mention that most people couldn't overcome directional imbalance at high speeds. After learning about Professor Snape's grading system for magic, Tonks' opinion was that "Disapparition below level four isn't suitable for combat."
On the other side, Ron's stories became more and more mystical, leaving the students itching for more.
"Harry, we've never seen you perform in the club before. And now that the professors aren't around—" Dean said. The crowd urged Harry to show them something. Harry shot Ron a glare, but found himself somewhat eager and said, "I need a target."
"Gladly," Ron said with a grin.
They walked over to an empty space in the corner. As they passed Hermione and Neville, Ron whispered in a voice barely audible, "If I can't keep up, remember to save me."
Dozens of Gryffindor students stood up, forming a half-circle.
Ron stood against the wall and cast a Disarming Charm on himself.
"Are you ready?" Dean acted as the referee. Both Ron and Harry were serious now. "Three—two—one—go!"A Disarming Charm shot towards Ron, but he ducked out of the way. At that moment, Harry disappeared from where he stood—there was a cheer from the crowd—and reappeared to Ron's right, a red light forming at the tip of his wand. Ron quickly conjured a small piece of armor to block the spell.
Students resting in the distance noticed the commotion and started to gather.
For the next several seconds, the two exchanged non-lethal spells—Disarming Charms, Binding Charms, Stunning Charms, Petrifying Charms, and even some harmless pranks that students enjoyed. Harry was particularly tempted to try the Toe-elongation Hex on Ron.
"They're both so good," a lower-year student exclaimed in amazement.
"I'm not surprised by Harry's performance, but Ron—Is he that proficient with non-verbal spells too?"
"Oh, he's been struggling in Transfiguration. He still can't hide his freckles smoothly. Most of his first batch of non-verbal spells are combat spells..."
"What kind of magic is that?" another seventh-year student asked in astonishment.
The two traded spells back and forth, their footsteps constantly moving to evade incoming spells. They either dodged them or conjured a small halo of light in front of them to deflect the spells, then immediately counterattacked, creating a dazzling rhythm.
"Just like the Human Battering Charm, it's one of the advanced techniques of Shield Charms," Neville explained.
Harry occasionally disappeared suddenly, only to reappear from a corner and cast spells at Ron. Whenever this happened, Ron quickly stepped back, positioning himself with his back against the castle wall, keeping an eye on Harry's movements; or he cast a complete Shield Charm in the opposite direction, focusing his attention there, along with the enhanced senses from the Disarming Charm, barely managing to keep up.
The students watched in amazement, but they didn't see the consecutive Apparitions.
"Harry, give it your all," Dean shouted.
Harry held his breath, locking eyes with Ron. They exchanged a knowing glance. "They're all waiting," Ron grinned. In the next moment, Harry disappeared again, his wand stabbing straight out, a Disarming Charm shooting out with a loud roar. Then he vanished from where he stood, reappearing in mid-air near the ceiling of the Great Hall, blending in with the clear, blue sky above.
Hovering in mid-air, Harry waved his wand gently, and dozens of candles came crashing down like rain. At this point, onlookers were still searching for Harry's figure, but it was the students who had just arrived from a distance and the professors who had just finished their meeting in the staff room who witnessed the scene.
Professor McGonagall, striding across the hall, heard the commotion and approached with brisk steps. She pushed through the crowd and appeared in front of everyone, asking sternly, "What's going on?"
"We were demonstrating Apparition," Harry said honestly.
"Yes, Professor McGonagall," Dean chimed in, "Professor Teckross mentioned Harry earlier, so when Harry came over today, we thought it would be a good idea for him to demonstrate for everyone." Harry and Ron nodded vigorously.
Professor McGonagall raised an eyebrow.
"Mr. Milov," a pale-skinned wizard appeared. He was the Apparition instructor sent by the Ministry of Magic, Wilkie Twycross. "I did mention earlier that Potter and Weasley were very restrained and didn't use any forbidden spells. I believe with this excellent demonstration, the other students will take Apparition more seriously."
There were murmurs of agreement from the surrounding students.
"Well, since that's the case—" Professor McGonagall's lips tightened into a thin line, "then no points will be deducted. But since you're all free, you might as well stay and assist Professor Teckross in maintaining order. It'll save you from—"
Harry opened his mouth but didn't dare to object. Ron, on the other hand, accepted eagerly.
"All right," Teckross clapped his hands, "back to your positions. This time, I hope someone can successfully appear inside the hoop..."
The students dispersed, but Grindelwald, unnoticed until now, was standing in the corner, his eyes following Harry closely as Teckross walked past. He observed with great attention, lips trembling slightly as if he were witnessing something extraordinary.
It wasn't until noon that the Apparition class ended. Several professors moved the long table back to its original position. Exhausted sixth-year students and some seventh-years stayed behind to wait for lunch. Harry took the opportunity to ask about the Apparition certificates.
"Professor Teckross didn't directly mention the reason, but I think it might be because of concerns about the impact," Hermione whispered to Harry, "after all, if the Ministry had issued us certificates last year, it would have been a violation, but this year is different..."
It took Harry a while to sort out the logic. They didn't need Apparition at school, and by the time the school year ended, it would be almost July, just a month away from his adulthood, which would have little impact on the Ministry of Magic.
At eight o'clock in the evening, Harry stood in front of the stone gargoyle outside the Headmaster's office, saying the password, "Blubbering Humdinger." The gargoyle moved aside, revealing the wall behind it. Harry stepped onto the spiral stone staircase, imagining what Dumbledore would teach him later.
The staircase stopped, and there, on the glittering oak door, hung a brass doorknob shaped like a lion-eagle hybrid.
Harry took a deep breath and grasped the doorknob.
Knock, knock, knock! The door opened silently.
