Chapter 80: Chapter 80: SUSAN’S AMBITION 2
"You don’t have to say much. We both have benefited in many ways."
"I know, but I just wanted to say it. Thank you, Cali."
"We are friends and we help each other. Now get straight to the point before my ears grow calluses from all this sweet talk of yours!" Calista urged, cringing at the thought of receiving more praises. When would they stop?
Susan burst into a peal of laughter, seeing Calista’s reaction. After a good laugh, she resumed from where she stopped under Calista’s glare who was obviously not thrilled at being laughed at.
However, Susan simply shrugged, ignoring that intense glare and spoke her heart once more.
"I am not good at running a business. You know how we were raised. So I was wondering if ..... if it is possible, can you hire me when your restaurant opens? I want to learn to cook from you as well as business management skills. In the future, I want to rent a shop from you and start my own business. I ....."
Listening to Susan talking about her ambitions, a smile found itself pasted on Calista’s face. Susan wasn’t that too ambitious, actually. The only time Calista saw Susan fighting for what she wanted was when she wanted to marry her husband years ago.
After that, Susan relied on her husband’s prey since he used to be a hunter before getting hurt, which forced him to retire and become a full-time farmer.
Susan and her family now relied on their fertile lands, poultry, and pig farming. Of course, there were the gardens which helped the family a lot, since every time they went to Silverbroke, Susan and her husband would be selling vegetables and other garden produce.
However, they went to sell at the same rate as Calista. This meant that if Calista didn’t go, then they also didn’t go. It was as if they were going there for her sake, which she had always found very heartwarming.
Never once in these five years did Calista hear Susan saying something so touching as what she was saying right now. It felt different to hear what ambitions Susan had, although they weren’t a lot. That was more so for a village chief’s daughter.
"Darling, rather than renting my shop, why don’t you build your own? There is still more land remaining after the one your father sold to me. Instead of giving me money, invest in your future. This way, in the future, you don’t have to bow down to anyone. Since you are my friend, I will give you the best advice I can," after listening to Susan for a while, Calista interjected.
"You see, the land I bought is mine. If it gets famous in the future, all credit will go to me. If I let you rent my shops, I will get rent and other commissions related to you and everyone else using my land. But if you have your own land, shop and so forth, all benefits will go to you."
"I am not saying all this to stop you from achieving your goal. At the moment, while you learn from me since I will definitely bring you in and teach you as best as I can, you can buy a piece of land and take your time to build what you want."
"If things go well, I can assure you that in a year or so, this place will be popular and where there is money, people tend to gather. It would be too late if other people acquired the land before you. So, my advice right now, buy a piece of land. It doesn’t have to be big, just something which can suit your needs and you can slowly work on it."
"You don’t have to tell anyone. Just be cool with it. And let the progress flow smoothly and one day shock the villagers with what you have achieved. I am glad that you have come to me and said all this. At least now I can find a way to help you in any way I can."
"I will give it my best to impart what I know will be useful to you. Use whatever you want to make a future you want. Don’t limit yourself just because you are a woman. Women in big cities are doing wonders, so let yourself wild and do what you want!" at this time, Calista was no longer lying casually but sitting on the bed.
Such discussions didn’t require one to be casual but be serious as they were talking about something that could build or break another person’s future.
Listening to Calista saying all that in all seriousness, Susan became attentive as she pictured what she was saying in her head.
"Your words make sense. I didn’t even think up to that point. I guess I can do a lot of things at the same time. I have some money and I will check with my father how much land I can buy with my savings. In the future, with the money we have, we will build a shop and ..." Susan began enthusiastically to dream once again, making Calista smile beautifully upon seeing that.
"And don’t forget that you are currently living with your parents. You and your husband need to buy your own piece of land, as well as farmlands. You don’t want to be the talk of the village in the future because of your current situation. At the end of the day, the culture stipulates that everything would go to the male children. Although you had your husband marry into your family, the reality is still cruel!" Calista didn’t forget to remind Susan of some hard pill to swallow at that moment.
Susan and her husband had been too lazy and relaxed that they forgot that people talk. She has a brother and that brother one day would take over the family once Ba Susan was no more. No one knows what the future holds. And no chicken yard can accommodate two roosters at the same time.
Having Susan settle down on her own, she can separate from her family and give her own family of three and maybe more in the future room to breathe. They can do whatever they want without being wary of what their parents, brother or sister-in-law might say.
How wonderful that would be!
