Chapter 78: PLANS FOR THE RESTAURANT
Chapter 78: Chapter 78: PLANS FOR THE RESTAURANT
On the fourth day after Orson’s departure, Calista was sitting in the gazebo with Whitey playing on the floor with a toy.
Covering her lower body with a blanket, Calista held a book in her hand as she jotted down the plans she had for the restaurant.
After completion, decorate the place. (Buy decorations.) Cosign for the furniture to be made or bought. Get the necessary kitchenware, cutlery, pots and stoves. Prepare a menu. Buy ingredients. Hire a helper. Open the restaurant.
Those seven were what she thought was urgent from the moment she opened the restaurant.
After the restaurant is finished, she would have to decorate the place to make it livelier and a place where people are willing to come and dine.
She would have to search for the decorations later when she travelled to Silverbroke town in a few days since the restaurant was nearing competition.
She would need furniture, such as tables, chairs, island for placing dishes once the food was done as well as shelves and cabinets for storing kitchenware and other things.
That also leads to the next plan, buying what she needs to start selling food. The pots, plates, and other cutleries are required. All that wasn’t yet bought, so she had a lot of work to do.
The next plan was to prepare a menu which was something she had thought of already before but because of how busy she was checking the clinic and then getting reminded of Orson, she felt pissed off to even bother to start jotting her menu.
Now that she had time, she decided to work on the menu issue as she could only go to number five when she knew what she would be preparing.
After racking her brains for days, Calista finally set on preparing low-budget food. Food that even peasants could afford and yet looked luxurious. At the same time, it should be food that could tempt the nobles and passing merchants and let them pay a lot of money.
Of course, she was going to add an extra menu, just in case these nobles didn’t want to eat the same food as the peasants. After all, it didn’t hurt to earn an extra cent.
With that thought in mind, she opened another page and started writing randomly as she would decide later how to match what with what.
On her menu, since she was targeting peasants as well, she needed food which could make someone full, provide a balanced diet and make a person willing to fork out his or her money.
Thinking of such kinds of food, the first thing she jotted down was pap. It was very fulfilling no matter which grain one used. Be it corn or millet, everything was okay. With that jotted what followed next just smoothly followed.
Rice, crushed corn also known as samp, dumplings (the one where dough is boiled without filling inside rather than steaming it) and porridge. All those five would make for the staples. Some people prefer porridge over others, so she would accommodate them as well.
As for relish, she jotted down, stew (goat, beef, pork, chicken and fish), vegetables, roasted meat (fish, beef, pork, chicken, etc.), and soup.
These dishes consisted of ingredients which were readily available in her village and neighboring villages as well. So, she didn’t have to worry about resources at all.
Calista was planning on providing lunch and supper. She couldn’t wake up early in the morning to start serving people. She didn’t even believe that anyone would dare come to the restaurant early for a meal.
In the afternoon, a lot of villagers would be roaming by and passersby would be traveling to their destined destinations as well, making it convenient for her.
However, the most important reason was giving herself ample time to be free without doing much. She wasn’t going to exhaust herself as if she had a huge family to take care of.
Since she was planning on lunch and dinner, these dishes she had jotted down would work pretty well. Today she would cook one kind of dish and tomorrow another. Rather than providing a fancy menu, she was going home-style. You eat what Mother prepared, straightforward.
That method in her heart was very good. For example, looking at how households are run. When a meal is prepared, the whole family will eat that food. There might be some leftovers remaining, however, it won’t be much like what can remain in a restaurant which had cooked several dishes and failed to have interested buyers in the end.
What she wanted to eliminate was wastage and having too many leftovers caused by having a variety of too much food. People should still learn how to save. Do they think that money falls from the skies?
After sorting out the menu, the process of acquiring ingredients would be very easy. Just go to town and buy as much as she could and store the meat in the ice cellar and other items in that thing. What does she have to worry about since she is alone at the moment?
For ingredients such as vegetables, she would get them from the village. Susan’s main business was vegetables, which lessened her worries in that regard.
Hiring a helper was something which needed to be done carefully and without a hurry. She was going to take her time as she waited for the restaurant to open.
As for what needed to be added to the list, that would have to wait until she thinks of something in the future.
With the plans sorted out, Calista found herself dosing as the cool breeze baptized her.
"I need to go inside. It’s a bit dangerous to nap out here!" she said with a sigh as she shook her head.
The drowsiness was getting to her big time, something which had been happening lately.
"I really need to find something to do!" she lamented as she stood on her feet, her eyes betraying her, showing how much she would rather go and lie down than do something else.
In the end, Calista climbed the stairs, shut the door closed and headed upstairs for a nap.
Rather than chilling in the cold, why not bundle herself inside the warmer house?
With a smile on her face, Calista fell into a deep slumber only to wake up a while later cursing angrily. "Of all things to show me, you just had to push my buttons, damn you, goddess of fertility, how dare you mock me and make me give birth to a damn cat? What kind of dream is that?"
