Chapter 67: BUYING BRICKS AND HIRING MASONS
Chapter 67: Chapter 67: BUYING BRICKS AND HIRING MASONS
Calista loved people who were straightforward and always direct to the point. This issue of having someone talk to her in riddles, proverbs or parables. She hated it so much.
So, when the man asked her directly without going around in circles, she liked him a lot.
"Um. If it’s possible, I want to hire all of them, but that’s only if they know how to make brick houses!" Calista answered the man, her eyes sparkling with interest.
As soon as the man heard that, he clapped his hands, a wide grin appearing on his face.
"You came to the right place. They have a lot of experience in dealing with bricks. You can trust them on that!" the man said enthusiastically.
Surely hearing such news, Calista felt that she had come to the right place. At least she didn’t waste time by going around when there was such a place which could solve all of her problems like that.
"That’s good then. If it’s possible, can I meet them? Either today or tomorrow. I will be in town in these two days, so I want to see them before I leave."
"Don’t worry, madam. They live nearby. If you don’t mind, you can wait while someone goes and calls them!"
"I don’t mind. Please do so!"
Why wait until she could see them on the same day and get done with that issue?
Seeing her agreeing, the man sent a few boys to call the masons over. Meanwhile, he and Calista started discussing another major issue with why she was at the workshop in the first place.
"I want to buy bricks and right now, all the bricks you have in stock. How much are they, uncle?" Calista asked as soon as she was seated under the shade, looking like a rich madam.
The middle-aged man who was the manager of the workshop was called Ben and Calista preferred calling him Uncle Ben, as that brought them a bit closer than using titles.
In this world, calling someone a Mr., Mrs., or Ms., didn’t exist. It was either lady, master, mistress, or madam. However, calling Ben his name directly or master didn’t sit well with her at all. So she opted to use uncle.
Besides, Uncle was better than Grandpa, wasn’t it?
And Ben being called respectfully like that with such a beautiful and rich madam, he felt that living up to his age was worth it. He didn’t know where this rich madam came from, but he was grateful that she came to his workshop and not his rival.
So, without wasting too much time on the customers, he gave them a response. And the response was something that Calista loved.
At this moment, bricks were expensive, which was why people had to think twice before they could even buy them. However, for a person like Calista who got money for nothing daily as if she were working somewhere, what she didn’t lack was money.
So, after hearing the price, she didn’t waste time but took out some banknotes from her pouch, which was hiding in the sleeves of her dress.
And Ben, seeing how Calista didn’t bother to negotiate but paid directly without causing trouble, became more respectful to her. The two signed a contract for the current purchase. As for the other orders, Calista still needed to talk with the masons to see how many bricks and how many materials were required for what she wanted to be completed.
After waiting for nearly two hours, the three masons finally graced them with their appearance.
Meanwhile, Frank had already left with a load of bricks the oxcart could carry. As for the rest, Ben would be supervising and making sure that they all get transported to the village.
The three men were quite surprised to know that it was the lady who wanted to talk with them and not the man. After all, they had never worked with a woman before. However, seeing the elegant man who looked like a scholar sitting there and looking affectionately at the young woman, they decided to mind their own business.
If they offended these two, who knows when they would get another job?
So, in the next two hours, Calista showed the men that women had brains as well. They were not just born to give birth and take care of households. Their brains were meant for greater things.
Orson on the side listened as well, very much amused by the things that his wife was quite knowledgeable about. After showing the men the kind of buildings, she wanted, they all came to an agreement and an estimate of the bricks which could be used was given.
Hearing the quotation and how it didn’t seem exaggerated, Calista decided to sign the contracts.
Hiring three masons wasn’t something that she did on a whim. It was winter season, and although the chilly hadn’t started getting deeper to the bone yet, however, everyone was starting to feel it.
She needed the buildings to be built as speedily as she could. This way, she could start operating as soon as possible. She wanted the factory to be built, and this factory needed to be very huge as it would be partitioned into many spaces in the future.
She didn’t know exactly which projects she would be doing, but having one big factory for the moment was what she wanted.
There was the dormitory issue, and these dorms would be built close to the factory. It was because of the dorms that she decided to have one big building, at least that’s what it would look like on the outside and yet inside it was like a small village.
The wasteland was huge, but not that big enough to have a lot of buildings built. Besides, from what the masons talked about, the resources she would have to take out were less than when having separate buildings.
The other buildings she needed apart from those two were a restaurant on the roadside and the clinic in the village. The rest of the buildings would be dealt with in the future. But those four, as soon as today, she needed the masons to start.
Fortunately, these masons had several teams beneath them, so they promised to do the job efficiently and as fast as they could without compromising the quality of the buildings.
As for when they would start, they would have to wait until the land gets cleared and the first order of bricks was sent. The masons were eager to start work since the contracts were signed, so they decided to take part in delivering bricks, which was something that she didn’t disagree with.
Having Frank deliver the bricks alone wouldn’t suffice, and having more help would make life easier.
As for where the bricks would be placed, a place was already arranged, and all they needed to do was send them there.
With everything discussed, Calista and Orson both left the workshop when the sun was about to set down on foot since the carriage was gone already.
