Chapter 62: Chapter 62: JOB OPPORTUNITIES 2

Ba Susan chuckled lightly as he listened to his people’s guesses and their thoughts. So, without further ado, he opened his mouth and resumed his address.

"I am afraid that it’s nothing like you are thinking. I am here on behalf of our fellow villager, Madam Calista. As you all know, she joined our village five years ago, and we have been living together, whether harmoniously or in discord since then."

"Today, on her behalf, I want to hire people for manual labor. Do you remember that wasteland a distance away from the village? She bought it and now belongs to her. She wants people who can clear that place and prepare it for construction. That also means that apart from people who will be clearing, we want two professional masons who can use bricks well. so, if you know any masons who fit this criterion, please send a message. As long as they satisfy her requirements, they will get the job."

"Not only that, the stretch of land on the roadside in front of the village, she bought it again and wants more people to clear it. After clearing it, masons would be required. So don’t forget to send a message to your relatives and friends."

"And lastly, to thank us for taking her in for all these years, she had decided to build for us a clinic and all at her expense. So, villagers, I hope that you will cooperate. You all know how important having a clinic is, especially during the season we are entering right now. The nearest clinic is hours away and we can’t afford it if anything unexpectedly happens during these moments. So, I implore all of you to cooperate. Set aside your prejudices and let’s get this done!"

Listening to the village chief using his linguistic skills to address the crowd, Calista was in awe. ’No wonder why he became the village chief.’

Without interpersonal skills, how could a person lead strongly like that?

"Chief, you are not lying to us, are you?"

"What do I gain from doing so? Every single word I spoke is true."

"Then how much we will be paid? And how long do we need to finish the task?"

After throwing a few questions, Calista could see that people were getting interested. Maybe it was the free clinic, or it was the chance to earn some money, but whatever it was, she was grateful that they were accepting and weren’t making things difficult for her.

When the money issue was raised, Ba Susan gave the floor to Calista since they hadn’t actually discussed it earlier. He was too excited to even ask about it, so how could he answer them?

As a result, Calista ended up addressing the villagers as best as she could, hoping that somehow, they would cooperate with her till the very end.

"So, for the wages, I will be paying daily. As you all know, the daily rate a person can earn while working part-time jobs even in Silverbroke town is 3 to 5 copper coins, depending on the kind of job that you will be doing. But I will be paying 5 copper coins per day, with food provided as well. So, I hope that we will work together well."

"Just because I am paying well doesn’t mean that I want to see the days getting elongated during the clearing. I will not tolerate that," Calista narrowed her eyes as she looked at the villagers.

It was a common thing when paying daily rates for workers to try to be lazy and put to work for the day to the other in order to be paid more.

"How many people will you be hiring then?" Ba Susan asked, seeing that the atmosphere had turned gloomy suddenly.

Calista suddenly smiled as she clapped her hands, "The wasteland is quite big and there are some dried trees there which need felling. I also need people to clear the dried grass and stones. So, I can say that at least fifteen men for removing the trees. Since I said earlier that anyone has a chance to work, I was including the women and children as well."

"I will need around fifteen women to clear the grass and children as long as they can carry the stones. I am fine with thirty. However, let me be clear with you, for the kids, I will be paying 1 copper coin since they can’t do much in a day. As for the roadside, I will need five men and ten women for the job. I guess that this explains it!" with that, Calista finished her address.

Getting the clue, Ba Susan clapped his hands as he looked at the response of the villagers and said, "I guess that you have heard it, everyone. If you are fine with what she had just said. Don’t forget to come tomorrow to the hall to register. Once the people have been picked, we will start the following day. So come in your numbers!"

Upon hearing that, the chatter amongst the villagers started again. However, generally, the response was quite good, which was something that made Calista feel better even when she was leaving with Orson walking hand in hand.

"Those two!" Susan cursed angrily as her eyes spit fire just looking at the couple who once again didn’t put anyone in their eyes.

Frank patted his wife’s hands, trying to cool her down.

"You should start getting used to them, though!"

"But they .... How could she?"

"You know your friend; does she look like someone who literally cares about face?" Frank reminded Susan, seeing where her thoughts were headed.

And surely, upon hearing that, Susan sighed dejectedly as she massaged her throbbing temples. "I guess I need to get used to it."

"Relax, you will age faster than her at this stage!" he teased her, making her flush red.

"You ....." Susan fumed, her cheeks bulging at hearing that.

"Hahaha, smile like that and don’t frown, okay? Anyway, have you thought of what you will be doing during this time?" As they walked back to the house, Frank asked Susan.

"Um, I will be cooking for the staff. The wages are pretty good. Besides, aren’t you leaving with them to town?"

"Um, I am and I will be lonely without you there!" Frank sulkily said as he looked at his wife coyly.
