Chapter 61: Chapter 61: JOB OPPORTUNITIES

The village chief didn’t waste any more time upon confirming what Calista wanted. So, he rang the village bell, which summoned every available villager to the village hall where the most important meetings were usually held.

Calista and Orson didn’t leave the village chief’s house but lingered around after Ma Susan enthusiastically persuaded them to have some food to eat.

Facing such kind elders, why should they make things difficult for them?

Orson smiled affectionately without even noticing it as he watched Susan nagging Calista while peeling boiled round nuts for her.

"You are older than me, already Cali, and yet you still need someone to do this for you? It’s been five years!" Susan complained as her hands peeled the round nuts fast and the way she was doing it showed that she had done something like that for a long time.

She was a professional at it, and it made Orson wonder how these two became very close with how Calista was a bit lazy at times.

As for Calista, she stuck her tongue playfully as she watched the round nuts piling up nicely on her plate.

"Susan, why bring up the years like that? Aren’t we good friends?"

"You .....!" Susan was speechless at Calista’s shamelessness.

Ma Susan, seeing the two friends at each other’s throats again, simply shook her head before adding a roasted sweet potato to Calista’s plate.

"Eat more while you wait!" she said, smilingly while ignoring her daughter’s glare.

Sitting across from the ladies were Orson, Frank (Susan’s live-in-husband), and Tim (Susan’s younger brother).

"Don’t worry about them. They are always like this!" Tim, seeing how Orson’s expression was changing constantly as he watched the interaction of the three, said to him with a smile.

Upon hearing that, Orson looks at Tim inquisitively.

"They won’t fight. My sister enjoys the process, anyway!"

"But ....."

"Everyone has spoiled your wife. And it’s done in love, so don’t let it weigh you!" Frank interjected, trying to make Orson feel better.

Orson, seeing everyone speaking up for his wife, decided to shut his mouth and enjoy his food. Since they all loved doing what they were doing, who was he to interfere?

So, in the next hour, Orson’s cheeks ended up aching, tired of stifling his laughter as the banter between friends continued.

"Everyone has gathered. Do you want to go as well?" after eating, Ba Susan informed Calista, who was rubbing her bulging belly relaxedly.

Calista raised her head to look at the man she liked a lot and respected more like a father and nodded her head in agreement. She was too stuffy from all the eating and didn’t have any strength to speak.

Seeing her like that, Ba Susan nodded before he spoke. "Let’s go then. We don’t want to keep everyone waiting after they have left their jobs."

"That’s true. Come on dear, let me help you up!" Orson volunteered as he stretched his hand towards Calista whose sitting posture didn’t seem to be of a person who was going to stand on her feet anytime soon.

Calista, receiving free help, instantly grinned as she stretched her hand towards Orson’s big hand.

Watching the interaction between the newlyweds, Susan blushed and inwardly scolded Calista for being too thick-skinned. Why was she acting all mushy in public like that?

Unfortunately, the two were very thick-skinned and since they were used to showing their affection anywhere, they didn’t find anything wrong with what they were doing. Besides, wasn’t it just helping her up?

Regardless of what others were thinking, Orson helped his lazy wife on her feet and made sure that her outfit was in order before waiting for the Dickens family to make their move.

After a while, everyone, including the quiet Nancy, Tim’s wife and their sleeping two-year-old son, left for the village hall.

Standing outside the hall, several villagers, from old to young, were gathered, chatting enthusiastically and wondering at the same time what was so urgent for their chief to ring the bell like that. What was going on?

That question was stuck in their minds as they patiently waited.

"Oh! They are here!" a kid suddenly shouted, pointing in the direction where the village chief and the rest were coming from.

"I also see her. I wonder what she has been up to again!"

"Oh, my goddess! Is that the famous mysterious husband? I only heard about him earlier but didn’t think he was that good-looking!"

"He makes me very envious!"

"I can see a lot of maidens doing the unthinkable!"

"Hehe, they should first check to see who the person they want to do that to belongs to!"

"That’s true. If it was someone else, it might be easy. Unfortunately, he just had to belong to her!"

"Why did he settle for a widow, of all people?"

"Don’t let her hear you! Do you want to suffer like that man or Benita?"

"Don’t even start!"

"Why envy him? He looks very weak. Apart from a handsome face, what work can he do?"

"Such a pretty face won’t feed you around here!"

"I can’t wait for the banquet. When is she hosting it?"

"Who knows? We can only wait for now!"

As they whispered amongst themselves, it didn’t take long for the people they were waiting for to finally arrive.

As soon as they arrived, Ba Susan took his village chief role, instantly transforming from a playful uncle to a stern leader, making Calista wonder if he wasn’t tired of changing faces like that.

"Thank you, everyone, for coming on such short notice!" Ba Susan first apologized as he looked at the villagers who had answered his summons. "I know that all of you are wondering why I summoned you like this suddenly, but I can assure you that something good is about to happen in our village," he continued smilingly as he said that.

"What could it be, chief?"

"Are the officials perhaps visiting us?"

"Maybe we are getting some rations!"

"There is no drought, so why do we need that?"

"It doesn’t hurt to get some free food from the government!"
