Chapter 56: Chapter 56: LEFTOVER WOMAN 2

"You heard me well, Benita. Maidens your age are already married with kids running around already. Whilst you are home doing nothing. Apart from finding me here to disrupt my peace and call me names, what else can you do?"

"When I was your age, I was already widowed. Although it was unfortunate that I didn’t manage to birth my own child, at least I had my own family and didn’t rely on my parents. But what about you? Instead of helping either yourself or your mother, you are busy running around scolding people. Was that what those people taught you when you were slaving in the city?"

"Who was a slave you damn wh****?"

"Oh, why are you being sensitive? Tsk, tsk. Do you think that everyone here is a damn fool? Anywhere it doesn’t matter to me what you were doing when you were there, but the fact that you are still as mannerless as before, insulting your elders whenever you feel like it. I wonder if your father in heaven is regretting bringing you into this world."

"You ..."

"Even your mother, when she hears that her child is this shrewish, even more powerful than some of our own foul-speaking ladies, can she even swallow her food or sleep properly?"

"Leave my mother alone in this!" Benita angrily yelled as she looked at Calista, who seemed very different from before.

"Why should I leave her? Since she doesn’t have the guts to sit down with you and teach you manners, I will do it on her behalf for the sake of your father."

"You ..."

"I am sick and tired of you calling me names, Benita. Apart from marrying your father, it’s not like I took anything from you. Besides, it should be your mother complaining and not you. Don’t try to use your father to try to deal with me when you have your own issues."

"Before coming to me, have you ever wondered why the elders, including your mother and elder siblings, don’t bother with me? What makes you think you are so special to come running to me and shoot off your mouth as if you were never disciplined?"

"You ..."

"I don’t rely on other people but myself. What one hundred people can do? I can do better. You may think you can scold better, but trust me, I can get knighted by the Emperor when I put my mind to it."

"Before you come here to call me names, be it a hen that doesn’t lie, hen. What makes you think your father is innocent? Who said that whenever there is difficulty in conceiving, the problem lies with a woman’s womb? What if it’s your believed father who had the problem? You should be grateful that I really loved him and never badgered with a lot."

"Before calling me names, have you ever thought of yourself? You are already this old, and yet there is no one sending a matchmaker to your house. Pftuiee, what kind of disappointing child are you? Even when I was a widow, I still had boys and men chasing after me. But what about you?"

"You ... what ...."

"As a left-over woman, you should be racking your brains to either find a man who is willing to marry you or marry into your family. And if that fails, at least become rich like me so that no one would carelessly speak badly about you. But alas, your brain is too small to think much. Apart from losing manners and being disrespectful to your elders, you don’t think about anything at all. How dare you come over to call me names?"

"I just hope that you weren’t the one who sent that brainless person the other day. If that’s really you, trust me, not only you, but everyone in your family will suffer my wrath. I have tolerated you guys for a long time and now I am tired."

"Just because I allowed you to run loose last time doesn’t mean that it will remain that way forever. Whoever pokes me from now on, I will poke you heavily until I bleed. Just keep that in mind, leftover man!" with a daunting expression on her face, Calista shamelessly said, taunting the young woman who had never faced such a thing before.

"You ..... how could you say this to me? Aren’t you ashamed?"

"Haha, do I look ashamed to you?" Calista laughed mockingly as she spread her arms, her gaze scanning the surroundings.

The women by the river were no longer washing. All of them were enjoying the free drama and the gloating expressions on their faces were enough to make Benita shudder with fear, regret overwhelming her.

Why did she come all the way to get embarrassed?

Calista didn’t even give her the floor to speak. From the second they started, Benita already lost, and it seemed that Calista hadn’t even started yet.

What really happened? What was happening? And why did it seem like everyone was mocking her instead of Calista like they used to? What really happened in the days when she was gone?

Unfortunately, no one answered her, and she left with her hands covering her face, crying and fleeing in embarrassment a moment later.

It was after a while she stopped running and looked back towards the river where she could hear the women laughing heartlessly. She gritted her teeth and clenched her fists as she vowed to get her revenge one day.

On her way back home, thinking of what really happened in the past few days and why Calista’s words didn’t sound right to the ears, she suddenly bumped into an acquaintance.

"Benita, I didn’t know that you returned. Are you coming from the river?" the other greeted her enthusiastically, her gaze and tone that of fawning, which made Benita better.

"Yes, I just came from the river and came across something disturbing. Do you know what happened to Calista recently?" Benita asked curiously as she lowered her voice, afraid that others might overhear her asking for gossip.

When the other heard that, she looked around as if trying to assess if there wasn’t anyone eavesdropping on them before she moved a distance closer to Benita.

Benita took a step back as an offensive scent assaulted her, making her for a second want to wretch. How could she have forgotten that these people didn’t love bathing?

Unlike she who had been staying in the city for years, these people who had gone to Silverbroke town only were far way behind. If only they could bathe and get rid of such a bad scent, wouldn’t life be better?

Unfortunately, the acquaintance didn’t have a clue what Benita was thinking about her. Feeling excited to share the gossip since she didn’t have anyone to tell in the past few days, afraid that it might return to Calista, she began to exaggeratedly explain the matter to Benita.

"I think that something that a lot of us didn’t dare to speak out loud is that the story, despite the man confessing, might be true. Something about it is very fishy, and Calista is definitely not innocent."
