Chapter 53: Chapter 53: ACCEPT ME AS I AM

Calista was indeed very happy.

She had been on tenterhooks these past three days, anxious and suspicious that she might close her eyes only to find him gone.

She didn’t know how and when it started, but one thing was certain, without her knowing she had fallen for him.

She didn’t know who he was and where he came from, and yet she felt so possessive she didn’t want him to leave her.

So, despite her confessing and revealing her former marriage; she understood that it might be a big blow to many men. While men found it easy to marry maidens after getting widowed, it wasn’t easy for women, actually.

If widows managed to get remarried, it was mostly with other widows or even becoming concubines of lesser ranks.

She had never heard of any widow remarrying a man who had never had a family before. It was quite rare. Besides, no parents would want to accept such a daughter-in-law.

She understood that she was imperfect and that her means of getting the man wasn’t as honest as expected, but she didn’t have a choice. She didn’t want to find a male slave and marry him. The thought of him obeying her every single word just because she bought him didn’t sound right to her.

Having a husband like Orson on the other hand, despite the drama that would haunt her when he regains his memory, he would have a voice of his own and act on his own accordingly. And not like a puppet.

What she wanted from him when she started all this was to get what she wanted. Get a baby and let him go if he regained his memories. However, three days ago, after revealing her past to him and seeing that complicated expression on his face, she couldn’t read. She understood her feelings right away.

It was as if she got enlightened and that light shone on her. Since she recognized her feelings and love for him, the way she thought had even changed. Even though he had been sharing the same bed with her, despite not getting intimate, she remained anxious that he would leave.

After getting fortunate to fall in love twice in her second lifetime, how could she let that love slip through her fingers?

So, she became sticky and monitored him seriously. Even though she knew that her actions were enough to drive him crazy, for the first time in her life, she felt that she couldn’t even control it.

However, earlier that day, when he asked her if he wanted to go and hunt, despite her unwillingness, she still agreed.

She was going to give him the benefit of the doubt and hoped that he would return.

As she waited at home with Whitey in her arms, it took all her will to not send Blacky to follow him and spy on what he was doing there.

It also took her great will to wait patiently at home. And as she waited, she thought deeply about everything and analyzed as much as she could.

After looking deep into herself, the results were pretty shocking. However, after the shock, she calmly accepted herself and came to two conclusions.

If he returned to her, she wasn’t going to act capricious as she had done in the past three days, rather she would be expressive and let him know about her thoughts rather than suffer on her own.

Two, if he didn’t return, she was going to let him go and after winter she was going to leave. She had lived in these two villages for far too long that she had forgotten that she hadn’t managed to travel and see other places like she set to do when she was reborn again.

But who would have known that he would return to her and with four bounties?

How could she not be happy?

Orson watched as Calista hummed on her unfamiliar tunes as she de-feathered the pheasants and wondered why she was in such a good mood.

She didn’t bugger him a lot and asked why he was out for long, but there she was, minding her own business while humming a tune. What happened when he was gone?

Nevertheless, the answer to that question, he finally got at night when they were cuddling in the blankets, her refreshing scent filling his nostrils.

"Hubby, I know that we met unexpectedly and everything that happened from day one until now is a bit cringy, but I want you to know that everything that I have done wasn’t meant to hurt you. I really like you a lot and I hope that we can live together for a long time. I hate doubting you, but I just find myself being all pessimistic about everything."

"It’s been a bit tough for me all these years and at times I wonder if this person really means what he or she is saying. So even though I may know that you will never leave me, I still harbor that thought, ’what if,’ and I find myself acting the way I have been acting in the past three days?"

"I won’t give you a lot of excuses for my behavior, but I just wanted to say all this so that I may apologize to you. Since we are tied as one now, I should be able to trust you and not always be in doubt. So, for that, I am very sorry. And sorry for not telling you about my former marriage. I was scared that you would run away from me if you knew. There wasn’t much I could do to keep you to me, so I just pushed the matter away. For taking advantage of you like that, I am really sorry."

Never in a million years did Orson ever think that Calista would reflect and apologize, as she was doing. Listening to her tone, he could tell that she was being sincere about her apology. It wasn’t just her rumbling and trying to let the matter go. But her being serious and trying to make things work out.

What was even more surprising was the confession about her liking towards him. It reminded him of his earlier assumption that it might be the case and with her saying this; the assumption was proven. Honestly, he didn’t know how to feel about this confession of hers.

If he were to say that he likes her the way she did, he would be lying. He didn’t want to hurt her in any way, but he didn’t have much choice, especially recalling all the other assumptions he made about her identity. Only one answer awaited, no matter which way he took.

At least it would remain like that until he was certain of her identity and getting what he wanted. He felt sorry that she had fallen when all he wanted was to rob her of what she had. However, she was the person who started this first, so he shouldn’t be blamed.

However, as a gentleman, he had to respond to her confession, although he couldn’t see her face since she had buried it in his chest.

"You don’t need to apologize. I understand that it’s something that is a bit hard to talk about. And if it was me, I would have hidden the truth as well. So don’t beat yourself and stress. I made the vows before, so trust me, I will not leave you. I have become your husband and, with or without the memories, this husband will stick by your side. So wifey, let us live happily, okay?"

Calista, hearing that, sniffed as she buried her small face deeper into his embrace.

"You said it!"

"Um, I said it, so trust me, okay?"

"Um, I will trust you. And please, accept me as I am!"

"I have already done so from the very first day!" otherwise, which man in this era would agree to stay with a woman like Calista?

Even those courtesans weren’t as daring as her. Only a strong and thick-skinned person could stay by her side.

But how did that oldie manage to live with her for five years when she was like this?
