Chapter 299: Chapter 299: RELIEF

Orson and Shadow walked vigilantly in the forest, sometime after the incident at the inn.

After Orson listened to the guard’s details, the guard also fainted with an excruciating expression on his face. Orson had no idea how much pain he was suffering at that moment, but he could guess. It should be unbearable and he felt guilt for the people who didn’t know what was happening.

His guilt couldn’t override that of Shadow, the person who caused all that mess in the first place.

Orson sent Shadow to find a doctor and when the doctor came and diagnosed the patients. He was at a loss but still did his job and prescribed some medicine.

However, he couldn’t treat them since he wasn’t even sure what they were suffering from. He could only ease their pain while he went through his medical reports to see if there was anything recorded there.

When the doctor left, he couldn’t help but remember how the Thomas’s matriarch was bedridden but with a disease that doctors couldn’t even get a grasp on. Was it becoming too common for people to suffer from unknown illnesses?

The doctor was suddenly filled with enthusiasm to study more. He felt that he was lacking. Wouldn’t he be redundant if he continued like that?

However, those were just the doctor’s thoughts and Orson, who was worried sick, had no clue about that.

With his men crippled, and of no use, Orson could only bring Shadow with him. It seems that Calista had made it clear that she wouldn’t want to see anyone else except the two of them.

"Master, you don’t need to go. I will go by myself and deal with her!" Shadow tried to dissuade Orson from leaving, but Orson objected.

"You can’t handle her. Besides, I don’t think that she will be shedding anyone’s blood today. If she wanted that, she would have killed the guards, but she didn’t."

"But_"

Orson chuckled mockingly as he cut Shadow’s words and said, "Besides, if she brought those two. Are you sure that you can win against her?"

Shadow’s mouth opened, but no words came out. Although he had never seen the monstrous beasts before, he had heard so much about them. Honestly, he had forgotten about this matter. That’s why he felt confident that he could try something but alas; it seemed that they were doomed to lose before they could even start.

As a result, Shadow faithfully guarded his master and brought him to the forest where that girl was buried back then.

After learning the contents of the letter, Shadow could only think of that one place, so he took his master there.

They didn’t come across anyone on the road, so the journey was smooth, though the forest had an eerie sensation about it.

Rustle. Rustle.

Sha. Sha. Sha.

The tree leaves were falling from the trees, and the tree branches were swaying side to side and there were all sorts of noises, probably made by the grasses, small animals and the birds were chirping as well. And yet there was no sign of any human being.

Where could she be?

The two of them walked for a long time before Shadow stopped and that forced Orson to stop as well.

"Is it here?" Orson asked curiously as he looked around.

There was a narrow road, which didn’t seem to have been used in a while. If he hadn’t doubted Shadow’s photographic memory, he would have thought that he was being misled.

On the other side of this narrow road, there was a place which looked freshly dug but not exactly recent but more like for a few days.

Just looking at the size of the place, he had an inkling that it was a grave, but who could dig a grave and for what reason?

"Master, this is it!" Shadow’s response came, and he sounded a bit dull and tired.

Shadow was currently at a loss as he looked at the grave. Although it was dark that night, he followed silently to watch the girl being buried. He was worried that the people might play games, thus risking his master’s life.

Although it was at night, he wasn’t someone who easily forgot. That’s why when he saw Calista at first, he was disturbed as he recalled that slave who got flogged and died.

Besides, she was the only person killed in such a manner for his master back then and in this particular city, so he was very certain.

"It seems that it’s been dug. Could it be her?" Orson mumbled as he checked the grave with a disheartened heart.

Shadow’s hearing was very good, and since he was just next to Orson, he heard that clearly, and his eyes brightened as he thought about something.

"Master, since the grave has been dug recently, I don’t think that it’s her. How could the bones not follow the body?" he just didn’t find it making sense.

When Orson heard that, his eyes lit up as well.

The person buried there years ago might not be the sassy woman he fell in love with. They might be related in some manner but not the same person.

Thinking like that, he couldn’t help but feel at ease, but he celebrated too early as he heard Shadow exclaiming in pain all of a sudden, without warning.

"Ah~~" he cried out as he fell on one knee, his hand holding his calf, and sweat beads forming on his forehead.

Orson was taken by surprise when he saw that. He rushed towards Shadow and held his shoulders, his face with worry and asked, "Shadow, are you okay? What is happening to you?"

Although Shadow was his secret guard, a death guard to be exact since he was trained to even die for him, he was someone who had been by his side the longest.

He was like family, and Orson trusted him with his life and so of his family. They have been together through many trying times. There were so many times when their lives were saved by the ring of the bell, and yet they came out alive.

Shadow wasn’t someone who expressed too much of his emotions, especially pain. He didn’t even flinch. He would just take it as it is. And yet now he was crying, his eyes red and sweat dripping off his body. Just what was making him so painful like that?
