Chapter 297: Chapter 297: UNTITLED
"How far are we?" Orson asked grimly as he unmounted the horse at the resting stop.
Shadow looked at his master, who seemed fatigued and responded, "We have a day remaining."
Orson heaved a sigh of relief and massaged his aching temples.
It has been hard on all of them. In order to get to that city as soon as possible and inquire about the suspicions, they barely rested on the road. Knowing that they would be arriving in a day, he was at ease and worried as well.
If he finds that the guesses are indeed true, he doesn’t know how he will face Calista. However, he needed to know what was going on. Only then could he know how to move forward, but he sincerely hoped that wouldn’t be the case.
He hoped that Calista just looked similar to the person Shadow saw over a decade ago, but there still remained a ’what if’ in his mind and it was driving him crazy.
Orson and his men rested for a while and allowed the horses to have some feed and drink water before they resumed the journey.
With a day to go, he wanted to shorten it and reach there as soon as possible.
On his way, just like every other day, it was filled with the thoughts and wonder of how his children were doing. He hadn’t spent a lot of time with the twins, but they were still his children and he loved them so much. He wanted to be there for them and their mother, but circumstances were proving otherwise.
Anyway, when this was all over, his family would reunite. He hoped so.
The group rode their horses throughout the night and the next day, around noon, they entered the city gates.
’It looks more prosperous than before!’ he surmised as he looked around the place.
The people looked well-fed, and there were a lot of vendors and hawkers selling their goods. Other people were buying, carriages were moving up and down, and soldiers could be seen patrolling the city.
Everything looked organized, and he didn’t ignore the beggars along the streets, begging and seeking a better future.
He couldn’t help but sigh as he looked at these pitiful people. Some of them were truly beggars, but the rest had their own purposes.
Back where he came from, there were no such people. Everyone worked hard for themselves without the need to beg and yet these people didn’t want to find work to do but spent their time begging in the streets.
Looking at them, he couldn’t help but feel displeased.
Orson and his men went to the best inn where they fortunately got rooms to stay during their stay.
As people who had been on the road for so many days, they were so spent and needed freshening up.
So, once they were settled, they cleaned up and settled for a hot meal in the restaurant downstairs where they listened to the city gossip, which put Orson on alert.
"Hahaha, I never thought that in this puny life of mine, I would get to see the day that household falls!"
"Hehe, aren’t you celebrating a bit too early? What if they don’t fall?"
"Are you insane? How can they not fall with all this happening?"
"I heard from a certain bird that they are being investigated. If everything goes according to plan, in a few days, they will be arrested!"
"What? Is that true?"
"But if it’s like that, aren’t they afraid that by letting it slip like this, that family would be on the alert?"
"So, what if they do? As long as they aren’t guilty, they won’t dare run anywhere. Anyway, I can’t help but wonder which person did this wonderful job for us!"
"Don’t guess, just be thankful."
"I feel sorry for the matriarch, though. To think that she is in that state!"
"Tche, that’s retribution. Who made her kill everyone left and right as if they were livestock?"
Orson at first didn’t understand what he was hearing, but then his men looked into the matter and his expression was grave once he learnt about the matter.
Sitting inside his room, Orson’s gaze was gloomy. His hands were tapping the desk anxiously, a foreboding feeling washing over him as he asked Shadow, "Are you certain that it’s the same family we are connected to?"
Shadow looked very grim as well. He just didn’t understand how a family could have so much bad luck to have so many unlucky events happening to them all at once.
"I’m afraid that the case, master. Do you think that they provoked someone?" Shadow puzzlingly asked, his brain unable to think much on this matter.
Orson, hearing that, couldn’t help but chuckle wryly as something flashed in his memory. He didn’t respond to Shadow about what he asked but asked something completely different. "Shadow, what did you give Calista when you arrived?"
Orson looked solemnly at Shadow when asking that question. He didn’t believe in coincidences. Something about the downfall of the Thomas family just didn’t seem right to him.
Upon hearing that, Shadow’s eyes bulged as it dawned on him. He couldn’t help but fall on his knees and place his hand on his chest, his expression guilty as he responded, "The sorceress’s teleportation stone!" his teeth gritted as he said so.
"Hah!" Orson laughed dryly as he stood on his feet, his temples starting to throb again as he thought about that dreadful sorceress. That woman was created to cause chaos in his life.
If that woman was involved, he didn’t doubt that Calista was already here and the person who was causing all this trouble.
Why did the sorceress give Shadow the stone to give to Calista? What more things did she know for her to toy with them like that? And what was she gaining by doing so in the process? He just couldn’t get it.
However, the deed was done. So, he could only find a way to mitigate the losses. As long as Calista was here, she might be easy to talk to and find a way to go through all that.
