Chapter 294: Chapter 294: THE MATRIACH HAS FALLEN ILL!

The next day, Calista stretched her arms with a beautiful smile on her face.

’What a beautiful morning!’ she thought smilingly, recalling the shining gold coin the deity of wealth rewarded her.

Just sleeping and earning such an amount of money without doing anything. How could she not be happy?

Calista washed in the morning and changed into another pretty outfit. Once done, she went downstairs for breakfast.

"I can’t believe that people are that hypocritical!"

"Hehe, why are you acting like that? Don’t you know that they have been like that since years ago?"

"But it is truly unbelievable. They don’t look like bullies at all."

"Don’t speculate on what you don’t know. Who knows if someone is just slandering the family?"

"That’s true. I have received a lot of help from them. How could they have done such a thing?"

This kind of chatter was what welcomed Calista when she entered the restaurant.

’It seems that Nayeli had done her job well!’ she concluded smilingly, hearing everyone talking about the Thomas family.

It was day one. She couldn’t wait to see how much trouble this would make in more days to come.

Calista got a table and ordered several dishes of food. She felt like celebrating and having plenty of food to eat was the best.

After a hearty meal, she left the inn with a carriage and headed for Lady Iris’s manor. As a friend, who was concerned, she couldn’t help but want to check the other.

Unfortunately, when she arrived there, she was informed that Lady Iris had gone to her maternal home.

"Lady Solace, was there anything urgent you wanted to see my lady for?" the butler, seeing that Calista didn’t show any signs of knowing the scandals yet, asked curiously.

Calista regretfully sighed as she shook her head and responded, "I am leaving the city for a bit to run some errands. I wanted to bid her farewell. If I had known she had gone to see Auntie, I could have gone there instead of coming here!"

When the butler heard that, he felt warm and relieved that she didn’t know a thing. If she did, she would have indeed gone there, but seeing her here and listening to her tone, that didn’t seem to be the case.

"I will pass the message to the lady when she comes back."

Calista looked gratefully at the butler and reminded repeatedly, "Please do. Once I return, I will come and see her. Thank you for having me!"

"You are welcome. Please travel safely!" the butler warmly sent Calista off.

Calista left the manor with a faint smile on her face and under the butler’s watch boarded the carriage and left.

Meanwhile, at the Thomas’s manor, it wasn’t peaceful.

It could all be traced back to the wee hours of the morning.

The matriarch’s maidservant felt that something was wrong when the matriarch didn’t call for her the whole night. Worried about her wellbeing since she was getting on with age, she went to check on her and that’s where it all started.

When the maidservant entered the bedroom, she found her mistress sleeping on the bed with a pale expression and strange veins all over her face.

What was scary was how she could tell that the mistress was awake and in pain but couldn’t move. She had even soiled herself, and it was horrible and miserable.

Facing such a situation, she could only freshen her mistress while someone went to seek the physician.

Other servants were sent to inform the masters and mistress, and in a while, everyone who could gather was at the manor.

The physician had confirmed that the matriarch had fallen ill and had been attacked by a snake venom but that was also confusing.

If she had been bitten by a snake, she should be dead now. Such symptoms were unheard of.

The matriarch couldn’t move or speak. She was looking at them and hearing everything that they were saying, but to respond, that was another issue.

As if that wasn’t enough, someone barged into the courtyard, bringing more horrifying news.

"There is trouble! There are rumors spreading all over the city that ....." the servant who brought the news didn’t dare finish what he started, and it earned him a beating.

No servant wanted to blurt what they heard outside until someone bold, a certain concubine of the family, blurted the truth with malice in her tone.

"Hahaha, I knew it. One day, this family was going to be doomed. Look, even the deities had punished the old lady and gave her such an illness."

"You.... Don’t you know how to shut your mouth?"

"Haha, so what if I shut it? It can’t stop the fact that our family’s secrets are laid bare for everyone to talk about."

That piece of news shocked the matriarch’s children. They bombarded the concubine to speak, but before she could, Bertha arrived and her face was very dark.

"Damn! If I ever find the person who is busy spreading such nonsense about our family, I will skin him or her alive!" she complained angrily as soon as she arrived and looked at the concubine with a dark gaze.

The concubine shrunk her neck upon seeing Bertha and pretended to be dead.

Luckily for her, Bertha wasn’t in the mood to toy with her, but was concerned about what was going on and why it was happening.

Through Bertha, the brothers finally learn what everyone failed to say.

Their family’s secrets were spilling, and they were spreading far.

"Can we track who started it?"

"It will be difficult."

"But if we seek the tower’s services, we might get an answer."

"It will be expensive."

"It doesn’t matter. I want these rumors to be stopped."

"Let’s go and see if we can do something."

"And the news about mother’s illness must never spread!"

"Whoever is heard speaking such nonsense in this manor shall be flogged to death!" Bertha warned the servants as she gave them a stern and solemn look.

The servants knew their young mistress’ ways very well. They shuddered with fear once they heard that.

Bertha rolled her eyes upon seeing that and walked towards her mother.

She had never seen her mother looking so pitiful like that, and her heart ached. With her like this and the family in trouble, what would happen to them?

She held her mother’s swollen hand with gritted teeth as she looked at those two holes caused by the bite.

To think that even a snake dares to be so bold to enter the house and bite others. Where were the servants when her mother was suffering?

At that moment, she felt like punishing some servants, but when she thought of the rumors spreading outside about how they mistreated the slaves and killed them recklessly. She couldn’t touch them for now lest those families they didn’t see eye to eye with use that to their advantage and cause trouble for them. So, she could only threaten and wish her mother the best before focusing on squashing this nonsense before it fermented.

She wasn’t going to allow the downfall of her mother and her maternal clan.

Its downfall would be hers as well. How could she let it happen?

Unbeknownst to her, that was just the appetizer as more was about to come.
