A Love Reborn: Finding Romance Twice In One Lifetime -
Chapter 290: HER ORIGINS
Chapter 290: Chapter 290: HER ORIGINS
Suddenly, Calista couldn’t help but regret it and hated the mother she had never met and latched the foster mother who knew the truth but kept it away from her for sixteen good years.
The old slave sensed the fury from Calista and shuddered with fear. She saw the snake flickering its tongue and those eyes looking at her in a manner she didn’t like. But she didn’t dare utter a single word.
Judging from Calista’s expression, and the anguish in her eyes, the old slave finally believed that the child’s ghost was who she was talking to right now. A stranger wouldn’t have such strong emotions for someone else.
Thinking like that, the old slave felt very guilty and helpless. However, she couldn’t stop now that she knew who the other person was. She could only continue and hope that the truth would save her and on the account that they were once foster mother and daughter, she would let her live like she promised earlier.
"Your mother at that time wanted to kill herself and follow her child, but then she found you wrapped in a quilt, hidden in a cave. Seeing that there was no one, your mother, who had just lost a child, was greedy and selfish. She thought of taking you and replacing her dead child with you.
That’s how you ended up as her child. She picked you from the woods. Maybe you were thrown away or perhaps your mother had left you to do something. Honestly, I don’t know. She told me after she returned to the manor that she was like a younger sister to me. And I kept this secret until now. At least it was better to pick you up than leave you there. What if you had been devoured by wild beasts?"
Calista was at a loss as she listened to that. She couldn’t even find the strength to get angry or even condemn the two women for such a thing.
If she was found in a cave, then her mother was probably not around. Just like the old slave had said, her life might have been lost if left there. So, her mother had saved her somehow, but what if she wasn’t thrown away and her mother had perhaps left her to find something to eat but couldn’t go with her?
Did her mother even think about how her biological mother would have felt upon returning and not finding her?
But who could she ask these questions?
The person who did all these crimes wasn’t even here to answer for her crimes. So why bother?
She couldn’t pin this on the old slave. She had tried her best to raise her well in the manor, though it couldn’t match with what a mother would have done for her child. However, for a foster mother who was also a slave, Calista doesn’t want to lie. She tried her best.
She also understood that there was nothing the old slave could have done when she was wrongly accused, flogged, and buried alive back then. If she had pleaded for her, she would have died as well. Their lives didn’t mean much and they wouldn’t even pay for their crimes.
She was unfortunate to have appeared on that night, seen and overheard what she shouldn’t have. Above all, she was unfortunate to have been brought home and have to live as a slave. If she hadn’t been picked back then, what kind of life would she be living now?
Calista took a deep breath and chased away such thoughts from her mind. She needed to focus and learn about the truth. Those people would be arriving soon. Her intuition was saying so.
"Where did she pick me? Tell me the place!" Calista demanded.
The old slave didn’t linger with the answer and hurriedly confessed.
When Calista heard about the place, her brows furrowed. That place wasn’t anywhere near where Mammy Lena’s child was lost. Calista found herself being sullen.
She was all happy a while ago thinking that she might have some relations with that family, but alas, she might not be.
She took note of the place and continued with her interrogations.
The more she heard, the angrier she became. Not at the old slave but at the shameless Thomas family who dared do anything and for people like Orson who saw themselves as deities and dared to kill people at whim.
Calista didn’t deny the fact that she wasn’t a good person. Her hands were indeed dyed with other people’s blood. But ever since she was reborn in this world again, except for a few bad seeds that she couldn’t turn a blind on. Whom she settled around the time she saved Hayes; she had never killed anyone again.
Her two pets didn’t kill anyone without her permission. They fed on spiritual energy and beast meat. If they wanted meat, they would go and hunt for it, or eat what she had but without killing people.
And yet the father of her children was someone who shed blood with every blink he made.
After all, if he wasn’t like that, how could she have died?
If she kept such a man by her side, who knows if one day she would be forced to her end by his enemies?
She had children and couldn’t live in hiding. If she escapes from that village, wouldn’t those people attack those innocent villagers just to bring her out or force Orson out?
Orson’s identity was very dangerous and after confirming what she wanted to know, a murderous glint flickered in her eyes as she looked forward to the day that he would arrive in this city.
As long as he comes, then there wouldn’t be anything to talk about.
They couldn’t live under the same sun in this life. There was no such thing as that.
After getting all the information she needed from the old slave. Calista knocked her out, cleaned her and threw her back into her room.
There was no need for the old lady to run away again now that they had met.
After dealing with that, Calista didn’t leave the manor straight away but visited the old lady’s courtyard. There were several guards patrolling around, but she didn’t care about them. Once she wants to do something, nothing can stop her.
