Chapter 285: REJECTION AFTER REJECTION

Chapter 285: Chapter 285: REJECTION AFTER REJECTION

Knowing that things couldn’t be rushed, she smiled benevolently at Calista and said, "It’s fine, my child. You can take your time to think about it. However, that doesn’t mean that we should be distant. Consider this as your second home. In fact, what do you think about moving in? You can stay here while you wait for your family. What do you think?" the old lady suggested calculatedly.

Calista rolled her eyes inwardly when she heard that, but still smiled gratefully at the old lady and responded, "Then I should thank you in advance. But I can’t move in immediately. How about I move in after a few days?" her tone imploring.

Lady Thomas, Bertha, and the daughters-in-law were taken aback by that.

Why was she reacting again?

However, they didn’t show much on their faces.

Lady Thomas cussed inwardly in her mind but still smiled graciously at Calista and asked inquisitively, "Is there something that you need to do outside?"

Calista nodded heavily and sighed heavily before responding, "There is an errand I need to run. Once I am done with it, I can just come here and accompany you until my family arrives. At the same time, I get to know everyone better."

When the old lady heard that, she didn’t push anymore. After all, she understood that there was a reason why Calista stopped in this city. Although she was waiting for her family, she should have had something to do.

"Okay, if you say so. Then I will wait for you when you are free."

Calista smiled upon seeing that the old lady didn’t push the matter anymore. She quickly found something interesting to talk about, and suddenly, the gazebo was filled with laughter.

After chatting for a long time, Calista remembered that she needed to collect her information from the Tulip Towers, so she regretfully informed the old lady that she needed to leave.

When the old lady heard that, she tried to stop Calista for a while, but the other was very determined. As a result, the old lady could only find a carriage for Calista to send her to the inn.

After sending her off, the Thomas ladies were finally alone and the old lady had everyone follow her to the main hall.

Bertha and her sisters-in-law sat down meekly as they waited for their mother to say something. Lady Thomas looked at the females inside the room and suddenly slammed the table, startling everyone.

"Mother, lower your anger. Did we do anything to anger you?"

"Mother, don’t hurt yourself. We can talk it out!"

They didn’t know what angered the matriarch, but it was bad no matter what it was. So, they could only beg for forgiveness and implore her to be less angry.

Lady Thomas looked at these females and felt a surge of anger rising in her.

How could other people’s daughters be so good at everything and yet hers were like these? She was especially angry at her daughters-in-law and Bertha for many reasons.

"How could you make me lose face today?" she suddenly exploded, taking everyone by surprise.

’What did we do?’ they wanted to ask but didn’t dare.

Even Bertha was silent as she looked down. She was fuming with anger. She had been scolded twice in one day and it was all because of Calista, the person she brought.

If she hadn’t seen Calista all the time, she would have thought that Calista spoke ill of her to her mother, but she didn’t do so. Why was her mother comparing them suddenly?

Although she hadn’t said a word, she had an inkling that it was related to how Calista carried herself. But was that her fault? Her mother taught her personally. If she wanted to blame someone, she should blame herself.

Seeing everyone silent, she was even more dissatisfied. She used to be proud and happy whenever everyone was silent like that, but after spending a few hours with Calista who dared respond, ask and act coyly making her feel that she had regained her lost youth; she found this pretty dull.

"I won’t dwell much about anything today, but from now on, wherever Calista is. I want you to take a closer look at her. As long as any of you carries a fraction of her wits, you will survive longer," Lady Thomas frustratedly said before she sent off her daughter-in-law who was happy to leave.

Watching them leave, Lady Thomas scoffed at how cowardly those women were at times. Once they were gone, she called her maidservant and instructed her. "Find people to follow Calista and report her movements back. I want to know who she meets, what she eats and where she goes. You know what to do, right?"

The maidservant nodded as she acknowledged the instruction before leaving.

Once she was gone, Bertha looked at her mother with a shocked expression on her face and puzzlingly asked, "Mother, why are you sending people on her?" not understanding her mother’s actions at all.

Weren’t they getting along together a while ago? Why the sudden surveillance?

Lady Thomas clicked her tongue as she looked at her daughter, feeling frustrated and helpless at how relaxed her child had become.

"Child, don’t tell me that you haven’t noticed anything weird about that friend of yours?"

"What?" Bertha exclaimed disbelievingly and nearly jumped out of her chair when she heard that from her mother. "What do you mean by that, mother?"

Lady Thomas rolled her eyes upon getting that response, and she frustratingly responded, "Something about her just feels off. We will know more once we get the reports." She didn’t know how to explain to her daughter that her intuition was giving her warning bells.

She had always trusted her intuition. She wouldn’t have acted like that actually, but when she asked Calista to become her goddaughter, it was around that time that she felt that something was wrong. Was it when she looked indifferent when she was scolding Bertha?

Since she claimed that she was friends with her daughter, why didn’t she stand up for her child? It was as if everything didn’t concern her. At some point, she saw a smile which disturbed her. She couldn’t get it out of her mind, no matter what.

So, for now, the best option for her was to monitor her and see if she was in trouble or not. Although she wanted benefits, it wasn’t to the extent of inviting a wolf into her home.
