Chapter 284: Chapter 284: GODMOTHER

The old lady felt very connected to Calista. The more time she spent with her, the more she liked her.

Calista, on the other hand, faked a smile as she listened to the old lady attentively introduce her to many things.

"Child, I really like you so much. I think that your character matches mine, perfectly!" the old lady boastfully said as the two of them sat down in the gazebo.

Calista shyly smiled as she looked at the old lady, making the other party smile, her wrinkles crinkling they were difficult to look at.

"Auntie, you ... how could you say that?" she coyly asked, as she lifted a cup of tea to take a sip.

The old lady smiled knowingly at her as she picked her own.

"It’s rare to find someone that I feel at ease with like this. I can’t help myself!"

Calista grinned sheepishly as she placed the cup of tea on the small table.

"Auntie, you are really outspoken. I think that’s why we click."

"Then why were you acting all shy earlier?"

"Hehe, that can’t be helped. I don’t want Auntie to get bored with me easily because of this."

"How can that be? Anyway, when are you leaving?" the old lady suddenly asked, her eyes very calm, as if she wasn’t interested in knowing about that.

Calista didn’t answer hurriedly but was silent for a while as if pondering before she answered, "I am not sure, to be honest. I am waiting for my husband to arrive. Once he does, we will leave."

When the old lady heard that, her eyes flickered before calmness returned to her eyes. "Okay, I guess that means that you can be here for a short time or a long time. Is that right?"

"Um, that’s exactly it!" Calista echoed as she nodded her head while raising the cup of tea.

The old lady didn’t show any emotions, making it hard to know what she was thinking about.

However, when she opened her mouth, Calista was a bit taken aback when she heard what she asked, "Do you mind becoming my goddaughter?"

"Mother!" however, before Calista could respond, Bertha exasperatedly called her mother, making Calista’s eyes brighten.

The old lady turned her head to look at her daughter who had just arrived, being followed by the daughters-in-law and frowned.

"Bertha, mind your manners!" the old lady chided Bertha, shocking not only Bertha but the daughters-in-law as well.

Calista didn’t react towards that at all but minded her own business as she sipped the delicious tea.

Bertha looked at her mother with shock, as she couldn’t believe that she would say something like that to her in public. However, looking at her mother’s serious expression, she knew that she might have gone overboard and crossed her mother’s line.

But wasn’t she a bit too going overboard herself?

She had just met Calista yesterday, and yet today her mother was asking Calista to become a goddaughter. Didn’t she need to look into her more?

Although she liked Calista, it wasn’t to the extent of her coming into her family and snatching her mother’s affection.

It’s been a few hours since Calista’s arrival and yet she was regretting her choice already.

Lady Thomas ignored her daughter’s wronged expression and looked at Calista, who didn’t seem to be in the present but elsewhere. Her eyes flickered as she thought to herself, ’She is a good seedling!’ becoming determined to bring her closer no matter what.

When Calista felt the gaze on her, turned her head to look at the old lady and smiled faintly at her.

"What is your answer, Calista?" Lady Thomas didn’t say anything else but shifted the topic back to the earlier question.

Calista didn’t expect that the old lady would ask her about that again. However, it was good that she did. She had been thinking of numerous ways to make her plans into fruition, but with the old lady asking her that; it was like being given what she wanted on a silver platter.

She took a deep breath as she raised her hand, revealing her peerless skin, and started scratching her head as if it was itchy.

The old lady was very patient, but her eyes couldn’t help but look at Calista. She didn’t seem like someone who lived in the countryside. Just what kind of rich life was she living there? She couldn’t help but be curious.

Calista didn’t respond to the old lady hurriedly but found time to take a glimpse of Bertha, who didn’t look well, before turning to the old lady and finally responding, "Auntie, do you mind giving me some time? We haven’t known each other for a long time. You might find me pleasant right now, but who knows if you will change your mind tomorrow? I can assure you that at times I even irritate myself!" a faint smile on her face as she spoke helplessly.

When the old lady heard that, her lips curled upwards as she nodded her head without any signs of dissatisfaction at being rejected.

Calista, seeing that, continued, "I don’t usually listen that well, Auntie. I am truly afraid that I might really piss you off one day. So, let’s wait for a while and if you still feel like you want me to be your goddaughter, then we can do the ceremony. What do you think?" her tone was very calm, without any eagerness or remorse for rejecting.

The more she heard, the more Lady Thomas became determined to make Calista her goddaughter. She was cautious but knew to cast a bait. An opportunity was put in front of her and yet she didn’t hesitate to reject it. Of course, she could tell that the other party was slightly interested, but not that much.

What she had might not attract Calista or faze her, and that attracted her more. If Calista couldn’t benefit from being her goddaughter, then she would benefit from being the godmother. It was a two-way street.

However, to get what she wants, she couldn’t hurry the other. Haste makes waste, they always said.

If she pushes hard, with what she had seen about Calista, she might push them away.
