Chapter 283: Chapter 283: GETTING ACQUAINTED 8

"Because I didn’t have any children with him and I was young, those bastard relatives called me names and even kicked me out before I could mourn my husband. They kicked me out of the village and I was homeless for a while.

Thankfully, a friend from a neighboring village saved me and her family gave me a place to call home. Anyway, after mourning him for three years, I started living my life. People always think that when a woman is a widow, she should live in the shadow of her husband, that’s what I thought as well.

I didn’t think that I would find another man who treated me well like my deceased husband. Besides, we all know how it doesn’t look right for a woman to remarry. People will talk and when living in a village like I do, it’s even serious.

However, the deities had something else in mind and brought me a man I fell for at first sight. I thought hard to myself that whatever I would do in life would never satisfy anyone.

When I was married to my first husband, they pointed fingers at me and called me a witch and a vixen. I couldn’t live in the same house with my husband and co-wife. I was forced to live separately and meet with my husband as if he was a guest.

In our years of marriage, there wasn’t a child that was conceived and yet it became my problem. They called me names and a hen that can’t lie eggs. The issue of being unable to have children fell on me but is this really a problem for women?

To have kids, two people need to cooperate. If the issue isn’t on me, then isn’t it on him? Unfortunately, everything was my fault, and I accepted such insults for years.

Even when I went to the river to fetch water, do my laundry or just take a walk. More insults would still come. I am seducing their husbands, grandpas and brothers left and right. When did I do that?

When I spent my money, they would talk and when they didn’t see me, they talked. So, since they could talk regardless of what I did, I thought to myself that I would follow my heart.

So, when I found the right man, I simply married him and thanking the deities, I finally conceived a pair of twins and everything is going well," Calista said smilingly as she thought of the babies she brought into this world.

’I miss them suddenly!’ unfortunately, she couldn’t go back and see them before she dealt with the current matter.

Without settling it, she would always be living in fear of something going wrong and she couldn’t have it.

The Thomas ladies never expected in a million years that a simple question would result in hearing about so much from Calista.

Bertha was at a loss and didn’t know what to say anymore. After hearing how hard it was for Calista, she started to understand why the other person was like that.

If she was the one who went through such turmoil, she would end up doing whatever she felt she wanted to do without caring about other people’s opinions. Since they were going to talk anyway, why not be happy and do what you enjoy?

Seeing everyone quiet, she smiled wryly as she wiped her hands, picked a cup of tea and took a sip.

She looked at the old lady and coaxingly said, "Auntie, don’t feel stressed. It’s all in the past. I will live well now and do whatever I want. If he doesn’t like it, then we can divorce. It’s not like a woman can’t live without a man. Our kingdom is a good one. Women can still have their households. I am no longer as powerless as I used to be before!"

Only then did the old lady sigh with relief, her eyes reddened as she pictured how tough it must have been for Calista.

"That’s good then. I hope that you can continue to be strong. Don’t let anyone bully you. If you have the power then do the bullying until the other party is on his knees to beg for mercy. These men can’t live without us and yet they think that it’s us who can’t do the same!" Lady Thomas revealed a disdainful expression as she said that last part.

Upon hearing that, Calista beamed relievedly at the old lady while inwardly thinking about the old lady’s past deeds. Indeed, a woman can live without a man. Wasn’t the old lady doing well now that her husband passed away over a decade ago?

She was flourishing like a maiden.

When Bertha heard what her mother and Calista were echoing about, she suddenly felt that she had made the wrong move. With her mother supporting Calista like that although she understood the reason behind it, wouldn’t the reform plan fail at this rate?

Unfortunately for Bertha, it was doomed to fail from the start.

She could only watch as her mother and Calista chatted like good old friends. As for her sisters-in-law and herself, they were completely forgotten.

At some point, her mother even dragged Calista outside, and the two of them walked arm in arm making her wonder where it all went wrong.

The sisters-in-law watching all that, all smiled smugly loving how their sister-in-law had been tossed aside. It should be the first time that she experienced being cast aside by her mother. The feeling was very refreshing.

While walking around the manor, being shown around by the old lady, Calista suddenly spotted someone she would never forget even if she died and that person happened to meet her gaze.

Their gazes both locked on each other and her lips curled upwards in a sly smirk which made the other party shudder in panic.

It wasn’t the panic of being seen but the kind of meeting someone who wasn’t expected to be seen.

Calista had seen the shock on the other’s face when she recognized her face and when she showed the other party that she knew her, the other panicked before hurriedly fleeing.

Seeing the other party fleeing like that, Calista became interested.

She was planning on looking for the other person when the Thomas family wasn’t looking but didn’t expect to meet accidentally like this and then the other just had to react badly.

Since she had been spotted, Calista knew that she needed to make a move quickly otherwise, it would be bad if she got reported or the other party ran away.

So, as she walked with the old lady, she scratched her palm and she felt a lick on her finger making her beam brightly.

It seemed that there was nothing to worry about. With that in mind, she continued with the tour acting coquettishly with the old lady.

Who knows when she will be able to do so again?
