Chapter 282: Chapter 282: GETTING ACQUAINTED 7

Calista sat down elegantly without any signs of being a village woman. As someone who traveled to advanced worlds than this, wouldn’t it be an embarrassment if she didn’t know the basics?

After sitting down, Lady Iris didn’t forget to continue with the introductions as she finally recalled that her sisters-in-law were also in the hall.

Calista greeted the sisters-in-law politely with a smile on her face but after that didn’t exchange anything with them.

She wasn’t here for them anyway, so why bother?

The snacks and tea were served, and Calista didn’t stand on ceremony but picked a soft cake and took a bite. She closed her eyes as she savored such a delicacy and couldn’t help but praise the cake sincerely making Lady Thomas very happy, she encouraged Calista to eat more.

Calista wasn’t one to waste food, and since she wasn’t worried about being poisoned, she was at ease making the old lady like her more.

"So, Madam Solace _" Lady Thomas wanted to say something but then Calista cut her before she could finish and said to her, "Auntie, you can just call me by my name, Calista. Since me and Bertha are friends and good sisters, if you continue calling me by the title, it would make us distant. Don’t you think?"

Calista’s words took everyone by surprise. They didn’t expect her to suddenly drop all the honorifics. She didn’t even lose the title when speaking to Lady Iris whose first name was Bertha earlier and yet after being in the old lady’s presence for a moment; she was like that. How could someone be so thick-skinned?

However, the old lady didn’t dislike this at all but liked it.

Although she wasn’t sure what motivation Calista had for her family which she doubted since it was her daughter who approached the other and not the other way around, having someone who spoke freely without flinching in fear was nice for a change.

"Hehe. That’s good! I shall you, Calista then!"

Calista grinned sheepishly at the old lady, picked another small cake and took a bite.

Watching her eat, the other ladies in the hall couldn’t help but wonder if they were eating different types of cakes. Did the chef add something else to the cakes that Calista was eating?

They couldn’t help but wonder.

"So, Auntie what did you want to ask earlier? I am sorry for cutting you mid-way!" seeing that everything was going the way she wanted, Calista asked innocently as she blinked at the old lady.

The old lady saw someone more shameless and cuter than her daughter, for a moment she wanted to steal this child and make her, her own.

She couldn’t help but chuckle lightly for a moment before she responded, "I wanted to ask how many children you have?"

Upon hearing the question, Calista let out an ’oh~’ with her brows raised before she dusted the crumbs from her hands readying herself to answer.

All ears were perked ready to hear the answer.

"I have twins, a boy and a girl from my current marriage. But my husband has two older children with his first wife. And from my previous marriage, there were four. Even if I am a stepmother, they are still my children, right?" she responded as she tilted her head playfully shocking everyone in the room.

With just one answer, Calista had revealed so much information, that even Lady Thomas was taken aback.

Only Bertha didn’t feel that way. After learning earlier about these marriages, she was at ease. It was her mother’s turn to be shocked. She just hoped that her mother would use her wisdom to reform Calista and make her a good wife and mother after hearing her words from now on.

Lady Thomas had never expected such a young woman to have experienced two marriages already and in both, she found a husband with previous marriages. Just what kind of taste did she have for her to do so?

Lady Thomas felt her temples throbbing as she looked at Calista who had reverted to eating her cakes once more.

She looked exasperatedly at Calista and asked, "Dear, how old were you when you married your first husband?"

When Calista heard that, she felt that her time was here. She was going to make these people faint with what she was going to tell them. As for whether they would allow her to return, she didn’t care. If she couldn’t use the front gate, there were still many ways of entering the gates, anyway.

"Um, I was seventeen, and he was already married with four kids. His youngest child is around my age. He was quite old!"

"You, if you knew he was old why did you marry him? Couldn’t you have refused?" Lady Thomas fumed as she looked at Calista.

She knew that the other party was intelligent and there was no way she would just agree to such ridiculous arrangements.

Calista sighed dejectedly as she looked at the old lady and helplessly shook her head. "What could I have done? I am just an orphan and he was willing to provide me with a family. What else could I have done?" her tone and expression were pitiful; it made those listening feel a pang in their hearts.

’How could someone be so pitiful?’

When the old lady heard that, all the energy to reprimand Calista vanished. Orphans had it hard. Sometimes having an evil stepmother was better. At least no matter what, she would still try her best to find a match that wouldn’t make the family lose face in the future.

But for orphans, they could only settle for anything as long as they could guarantee their lives.

Seeing that they had bought that lie, she continued, "but he was very good to me. Although he was older than me by twenty-three years and his wife was alive, he treated me well. It was only unfortunate that he died a few years later after we were together!" tears pooled in her eyes as she thought of the first husband who literally depended on her and yet the whole world was busy pointing fingers at her.

Now thinking back to what she did back then, she couldn’t help but feel that she was a fool. Although she didn’t regret falling for him, she regretted raising wolves who bit her after they were standing on their feet.

When the Thomas’s ladies heard about how old the husband was, their expressions didn’t seem right. They felt a wave of nausea. Marrying someone that old and yet call him affectionate and good, just how bad did she have it for her to settle for that? But Calista was just starting.
