Chapter 281: Chapter 281: GETTING ACQUAINTED 6
"How could I not miss you, my dear?" the old lady responded playfully as she welcomed her daughter.
Lady Iris burst into a hearty chuckle, her eyes squinting, obviously in a good mood. She didn’t bother to look at her sisters-in-law as she stopped without going anywhere.
The old lady was in a good mood and listened happily to her daughter’s happy laughter. Seeing her daughter not moving, she knew that she was waiting for her friend. She had heard from a friend about this new friend of her daughter and was even planning on letting her daughter show her this new friend. She didn’t expect that her daughter would bring the friend before she asked for it.
So, she was quite curious and so were the sisters-in-law who had been ignored as if they weren’t there.
Moments later, a bright yellow skirt flashed taking the old lady aback who never dared wear such bright colors no matter how drunk she was. What kind of new friend was this?
Her head couldn’t help but ache at the thought of her daughter getting associated with the wrong crowd.
However, when the person came into view, she couldn’t help but look at the other person amusingly.
Why did it look like her daughter had picked a sly fox and brought it home?
’Interesting!’ she mused as she watched the two enter the room and headed towards where she was sitting.
Calista on the other hand, clenched her fists in the spirit upon seeing the face of the woman she loathed more than anything else.
Being a slave in this household, she had had her own share of Lady Thomas. This woman was the most cruel and vicious person she had ever seen in her life.
She killed slaves without batting an eye. If you do something wrong and she is in a bad mood, you get beaten to death.
If she thinks that you looked at her husband for a long time or her sons, she would still have you beaten to death.
If you dare look at her daughter in a way she didn’t understand, she would still do the same to you.
If you dare gossip or let her suspect that you have done something bad which would tarnish the manor’s face, she would still have you flogged and if you die, then bury you in a mass grave.
Others were lucky, they got their tongues cut, became mutes and got resold. At least they were still alive, unlike those who died for what they never committed.
She feared Lady Thomas greatly and recalling the night of her death, that woman’s voice was very loud as she watched her getting flogged. Of course, Calista understood why she was doing that but why do something that nasty when you are afraid of being exposed one day?
However, no matter how much she wanted to rip this woman’s head from the neck, she couldn’t do so. Death was usually a relief to some villainous people.
Letting them watch every single second as they lose what they love the most would be the greatest punishment she would give them.
There was no good person in this family. Even the daughters-in-law were rotten to the core. They always watched and didn’t do anything to stop their husbands from all the disgusting things they did to the slaves. Just because the women were slaves, didn’t they have rights as well?
Since her attention had been shifted to them when she had never thought of avenging herself all these years, she was going to play the vigilante and serve justice.
As for what the authorities would do to the family, she didn’t care. She would just play around, and mess things up as she waited for the people, she was waiting for to arrive. As long as they arrive, then her suspicions would be confirmed. And when they are confirmed, the outcome would be just one.
Anyway, back to the present, she smiled at Lady Thomas loving the calculative gaze in her eyes as she looked at her.
"Mother, I hope you don’t mind. But I have brought you a friend I made yesterday," suddenly Lady Iris’s voice rang in Calista’s ears.
Calista turned to look at Lady Iris who wore a coquettish expression, obviously acting spoiled towards her mother and she felt sour once again.
Even villains still had their parents around but what about her?
Could it be that Lady Thomas also killed her mother? Suddenly her hatred towards the Thomas’s family amplified.
Lady Thomas looked smilingly at Calista and nodded her head as she looked at her daughter.
"She is a beautiful friend. No wonder why you liked her!"
Lady Iris chuckled shyly upon being pointed out by her mother.
"Mother, you ..."
Calista looked down shyly as if the words spoken had affected her a bit.
Lady Iris harrumphed at her mother before nudging at Calista and the other raised her head to look at Lady Iris.
"Madam Solace, that’s my mother, Lady Thomas," Lady Iris introduced her mother to Calista.
Calista nodded towards Lady Iris and turned to look at Lady Thomas and performed a slight curtsy while greeting the other, "Lady Thomas, it’s my pleasure to meet you finally. I have heard a lot of good things about you from Lady Iris!"
Lady Thomas’s eyes squinted as she nodded her head, liking Calista more and more. Although she looked like a fox, she was someone with manners and a sweet tongue.
"The pleasure is all mine, Madam Solace. I hope that you won’t find my daughter annoying!"
Calista’s eyes twinkled when she heard that and looked at the old lady with the corner of her lips raised as if she wanted to chuckle and said, "She isn’t annoying. I like her character a lot. People like her make good friends!"
Lady Thomas laughed heartily upon hearing that, obviously pleased with such kind of answer.
"That’s great! I can see why the two of you clicked now," she hit her thigh excitedly, as understanding dawned on her.
Lady Iris looked at her mother shyly and then at Calista. She wasn’t expecting that Calista would still be that direct even when facing her mother.
Lady Thomas was in a good mood and let the two take their seats.
