Chapter 279: Chapter 279: GETTING ACQUAINTED 4

The two friends enjoyed their breakfast and had a nice chat.

Once that was done, Lady Iris took Calista out and started showing her around the manor as they continued to chat.

"So, where do you live?" Lady Iris asked curiously.

Calista looked at the fake mountain inside the manor and smiled, thinking to herself just how much money these people were willing to use, to do this.

"I live in a beautiful village called Cropville," Calista nonetheless, answered the truth.

It wasn’t like Lady Iris could do anything to her in the future even if she messes with her.

Lady Iris was startled when she heard that. She didn’t expect that the other party lived in a village. She didn’t seem to be someone who could love there.

"This .... Why do you live there? You don’t like city life?"

Calista chuckled lightly as she turned to look at Lady Iris and responded, "City life can be infuriating. There is peace and solace in the countryside."

It was a hustle living in cities. She would be forced to scheme left and right and show off. She didn’t like to stress herself and be constrained by the restraints that come with so many people keeping an eye on her.

In the village, she was a tyrant and could do whatever she wanted without fearing anyone pointing fingers at her.

Lady Iris didn’t expect Calista to provide such a reason. However, she found that making sense though she would still prefer the life of being in the city to living in the village. What was interesting there?

However, she didn’t complain or show disdain. There were a lot of rich people who still went to the countryside for vacations and stayed there for months. So, there wasn’t anything shocking about that matter.

"So, what is it like living there?"

When Calista heard that, a smile graced her face and answered, "Peace and I am surrounded by fresh air every single day. We get to farm our food and forage for vegetables, fruits and other things. Unless there is a drought, we eat fresh food and don’t need to pay astronomical amounts of money to pad our bellies."

There were so many advantages of living in the countryside. The cost of living was very cheap. In Cropville village, a family of five could survive the whole year on a silver coin. Although she couldn’t survive with just a silver coin, other families would do so.

In the village, every family owns farm lands where they grow grains such as rice or corn. These are the basic staples for everyone and as long as there were there, the rest could be foraged in the mountains.

There are hunters and with every outing they do, they would bring home something no matter how small it is. That wild game if not sold would be enough to provide some meat for the family.

Every single hill and mountain was filled with a variety of wild vegetables. So, villagers didn’t need to be fed up with a single type of wild vegetable.

When it starts raining, mushrooms would appear, providing another delicious relish for the people. For those who owned cattle, they could milk the cows and have some milk as well.

The money earned from the jobs that the villagers take would then be used for other essentials that couldn’t be grown but needed to be bought. The costs of living would be low. Only people like Calista who still love living big despite living in the village spend money like crazy. For other people, they live according to their means without any pressure.

In the city, a person would be forced to live in a way that he or she doesn’t like just to save face.

While living in the city, buying new clothes once in a while would be a must as it would be embarrassing to be seen wearing the same clothes or clothes that are too washed or mended. But in the villages, until the clothes are no longer wearable, they would still remain the best.

Why waste money on what was there when the money could be used for other purposes?

Besides for Calista, the cost of running a business was very low there. She didn’t need to fear competition as well. So why not love living there?

When Lady Iris heard the wonderful things that Calista mentioned, she couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to live in the countryside as well.

While talking about the living styles, time flew and Calista was readying to head back to the inn or rather the tower to get the information she bought for yesterday.

However, Lady Iris had something else in mind and Calista couldn’t refuse such a generous offer.

Instead of heading back to the inn, Calista found herself traveling to the manor she had last been to twelve years ago.

The last time she stepped out of that place, she was on her last breath and she was curious to see how the manor had turned out after so many years.

On the way there, Lady Iris kept sharing about her family and Calista was happy to listen.

"My mother is a very good woman. She is loving, a good mother and respectable. When you see her, you will see what I mean!" Lady Iris said proudly, and Calista could hear how proud she was of her mother.

However, when she thought of the woman being talked about, she felt like retching. How could that shameless woman be so virtuous as Lady Iris mentioned her to be?

Nevertheless, Calista wasn’t one to deflate another person’s happiness especially when she still wanted to use the other. So, she looked at Lady Iris with envy and didn’t bother to hide it.

"You are quite fortunate to have such kind of mother. I really envy you!" Calista said sourly as she looked at Lady Iris.

That wasn’t a lie, to be honest. She was truly envious that Lady Iris had that woman as a mother. Despite her cruelty, she still loved her children and was willing to go to any length to protect them.

On the other hand, Calista was born a slave. She didn’t even remember what her mother looked like. She was raised by another senior slave who was close to her mother. It was also that woman who personally administered the lashing on that unfortunate night.

Thinking about it, she couldn’t help but wonder if that slave was still there. If she was, then getting some answers would be good in the process.
