Chapter 278: Chapter 278: GETTING ACQUAINTED 3
Lady Iris quickly hid her sourness and looked smilingly at the guest and cheerfully welcomed, "Welcome to my humble abode, Madam Solace!"
Calista grinned as she walked elegantly like a lady towards Lady Iris while holding the edges of the skirt so that it wouldn’t sweep the dirt from the ground.
"Thank you for having me. I hope that I didn’t cause any inconvenience," she responded politely, her voice very pleasing to the ears. It made the concubines who were feeling sour to be sourer.
Lady Iris beamed as she looked at Calista who didn’t put on airs. Although her mouth didn’t know what to say at what time, at least she still knew manners.
"How can I be inconvenienced when I was the one who invited you?" Lady Iris playfully retorted making Calista’s eyes squint happily.
The two friends welcomed each other and started entering the gates. The concubines hadn’t gone far, so Calista saw them.
"Who are they?" she asked ignorantly as she observed the three.
Seeing that the concubines had been seen, Lady Iris introduced the three to her. "These three are my concubine sisters."
When Calista heard that, her eyes lit up as she looked at them. She couldn’t help but say, "The sisters are pretty good. I used to be in a marriage where I was the second wife. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to have more sisters to be with."
When that was said, Lady Iris heard an explosion in her head.
Just how many times did she get married? Seeing how she was being carefree with her words again; didn’t she know that women tend to be misunderstood when they say such misleading words?
However, since the topic had been raised, Lady Iris could only carry on the topic, "Hehe, could it be that in your current marriage, you are alone?" and asked curiously.
Calista as if she didn’t hear the underlying tone of that question recklessly answered, "Um. I am alone this time. He was once married, but the wife died many years ago. So, I can be considered alone!" not feeling any sense of shame of being remarried.
When the c9oncubines heard that, their image of the other became complicated. They hurriedly bid farewell and disappeared.
Seeing them leaving, Calista’s lips curled upwards in amusement and that was caught by Lady Iris who started thinking if the other party had said the truth or not. Why did it look like Madam Solace was only saying that to chase the women away?
As they walked towards her courtyard, Lady Iris’s curiosity got the best of her, she couldn’t help but ask, "Madam Solace, were those words true? Or you were trying to send off those concubines away?"
Calista upon hearing that laughed heartily, a mischievous smile on her face and looked at Lady Iris and asked playfully, "What do you think?" and didn’t bother to explain that at all.
As a result, Lady Iris was bombarded with curiosity which couldn’t be satisfied at all.
Calista was amazed at how this shameless woman was living. To think that such a person with cruelty could still love well without any burdens, she felt her heart ache.
If she hadn’t seen her, she would have forgotten that she existed but since she was already here, she didn’t have a choice but to face the past she had tried her best to forget until Shadow reappeared in her life.
Calista was brought to the main hall where food was served. Once it was served, all servants vanished leaving the two of them in the hall.
The table was full of good-looking dishes which Calista believed to be delicious as well. There was no way that such a big household could keep chefs who weren’t good cooks.
Calista tasted the dishes and praised Lady Iris greatly making the other party feel inflated, she was so happy.
During the meal, Calista who wasn’t used to observing table manners, started engaging in a conversation.
"How is it like managing a household with concubines?"
Lady Iris paused when that question was posed and looked at Calista but found the other not looking at her at all but busy separating the beef on the plate.
It looked like she had just asked casually and that made her feel relieved.
"It’s not that bad. As long as the rules are in place and no one breaks them, the house will be peaceful!"
Of course, if anyone dares to overstep then what awaits her would be hell. Lady Iris didn’t say that aloud though.
Calista raised her eyes and looked at Lady Iris with sparkling eyes.
"You are truly awesome!" she praised sincerely as she gave the other a thump up before adding, "If is me, I don’t think that I can. I am too short-tempered!" releasing a sigh.
She didn’t mind being the concubine at all. The stress of managing the household would fall under the first or main wife, anyway. What did that have to do with her?
If she becomes the main wife, then her husband wouldn’t be allowed to have another woman at all. She knew herself pretty well. Someone might be buried in the household if she takes on such a position.
Lady Iris upon hearing that couldn’t help but chuckle amusingly finding Calista funny and very outspoken. How could she say that easily?
However, her honesty was something that continued to pull her in though the more she looked at the other, the more she felt that she had seen that face somewhere before. But where exactly?
It was stressful.
"How could you say that? Aren’t you afraid that your husband will divorce you if he hears that?"
Calista rolled her eyes playfully as she looked at Lady Iris and answered, "Umph! If he dared do that, then I will ditch him first. For someone that petty, how could he deserve me?" harrumphing as she said that, her expression very cute to look at.
Lady Iris seeing that couldn’t help but think that Calista was perhaps spoiled when she was young and that happened to follow her.
She was someone who was spoiled as well. However, the difference between them might be her mother didn’t forget to instill in her the virtues of a woman whilst Calista’s elders might have forgotten.
They might have raised her to ruin her.
Maybe with more guidance, she might turn out the best.
Calista had no idea that Lady Iris was planning on reforming her. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be something that would come to fruition no matter what.
