Chapter 276: Chapter 276: GETTING ACQUAINTED
Lady Iris sighed, unable to express what she was feeling after hearing Calista’s words. However, she still needed to continue with the conversation. So, she asked, "So where are you staying currently?"
Seeing the change of topic, Calista didn’t mind much and responded, "Next door," while looking in the direction of the inn.
When Lady Iris heard that, she looked at the other with sparkling eyes. She didn’t expect that Calista would be staying there.
"That’s good. It’s pretty near and convenient. Since we have met today, how about we become friends though it might be for a short time?" Lady Iris excitedly suggested.
Calista looked at the woman with a smile on her face thinking to herself how easy everything was going.
"Sure. Besides, why say for a short time? We might not be able to see each other in a long time but does that make a friendship vanish?"
When Lady Iris heard that, she nodded her head in understanding, accepting where she had erred.
The other women also joined in and the atmosphere at the table turned out for the better.
Knowing that Calista was outspoken, none of the three women dared to ask anything that they felt would result in getting a bold answer. They were in public, so they needed to maintain their image but once they were alone, they could go crazy.
The meal was satisfying and with four people digging in; it didn’t take long before there were bones remaining on the plate.
After the meal, the ladies paid for the meal and left the restaurant. It was a bit dark, so they couldn’t do much considering the fact that they needed to go back to their homes.
So, they sent Calista next door and promised to come and pick her up in the morning. Lady Iris invited Calista to her manor for breakfast and Calista didn’t refuse such an invitation.
After seeing Calista at the inn, the three women left in one carriage as they returned to their respective manors. Lady Iris was the one sending her friends to their manors, so she would be the last one to get home.
On their way home, the three chatted.
"What do you think about Madam Solace?" Lady Iris asked her friends.
Lady Mary sighed as she scratched her fingers, a reaction she usually does whenever she isn’t sure about something, and answered, "I think she is in trouble. Something about her just doesn’t seem right!"
Lady Iris was surprised to hear that she looked at her friend and asked, "Why do you think so?"
Lady Mary looked at her friend and answered, "She is too carefree. People like that usually don’t have a bottom line. What if we get tainted because of her character?"
Lady Kim nodded her head agreeing with her friend Lady Mary and added, "Lady Iris, you know how strict our upbringing was. If we dare play with her and get influenced by her thoughts, what would we become? She might be too carefree and risk her family or marriage but we can afford something like that."
"You heard what she was saying about being a woman. What kind of mother raised her to instil such treacherous teachings in her head?"
Lady Iris sighed dejectedly as she listened to her friends. Indeed, such thoughts were treacherous and traitorous. If they dare try something like that, not only would they get divorced but their maternal clan would disown them as well. What would society see them as if they dared go down that path?
"But I don’t think that she has ill intentions. She is just a straightforward person who speaks her mind," Lady Kim couldn’t help but contradict her earlier words.
Upon hearing that, the three of them looked at each other before bursting into laughter.
Indeed, if they think about the whole thing seriously and inwardly, Calista’s words were indeed very touching and made one think seriously about their worth.
Unfortunately, even if they knew their worth, it was pointless. They still needed to serve their husbands, sons and in-laws with everything that they had.
The ladies were dropped at their houses and lastly; it was Lady Iris. When she got home, she was welcomed by the maids, who took her to her courtyard.
She was lucky to be married into a big household which happened to be rich. As her mother’s only daughter, she grew up spoiled and had everything that she wanted. Whoever opposed her always had a bad end. The number of enemies she had at hand was pitifully few. Those who seriously offended her were nowhere to be found.
At the age of thirty-two, she was married with three children. She was married when she turned eighteen and in just a year; she welcomed her first child who fortunately was a son. She was very proud of this son of hers. He was intelligent and was similar to his father.
Her husband loved this son so much and that made her happy and brought her peace of mind. She was the first wife and her husband had three concubines and all of them had children.
Despite all that, her husband had always respected her and together they conceived three children. The oldest son was now twelve years old and a great scholar, following in his father’s footsteps.
The second child was a daughter who was ten years old. Very pretty and articulate in the four arts and a child adored by many. Her marriage in the future would surely go well, she was certain of that.
Lastly, her youngest was another daughter, and she was the most mischievous of them all. Thankfully, she was well-loved and her grandmother’s favorite. When she gave birth to her youngest, her health failed her a bit, so the youngest daughter was raised by her mother-in-law who treated the child well.
As for the concubines’ children, as long as they didn’t provoke her and cause her stress, she didn’t care about them. Thankfully, their concubines’ mothers were very obedient and knew propriety. She had never worried about the backyard at all.
Maybe it was because of that, that she didn’t really accept the words that Calista said earlier. Why take a rest when everything is fine?
Maybe her marriage wasn’t particularly doing well. That’s why she was like that.
Anyway, Calista’s skewed thoughts didn’t make her hate the other. She liked the other at first glance and felt that the other party was familiar. She wanted to find out where that familiarity came from, thus the interest.
Besides, as long as she didn’t fall for the pressure, there was no need to fear being influenced.
So, all the worries were unfounded.
