Chapter 270: Chapter 270: CONFLICTED

Cropville Village

"Lord husband, you have a visitor!" the cheerful voice belonging to Ma Susan rang in Ba Susan’s ears as he was just finishing changing his clothes.

"Who is it?" he asked out loud as he started walking towards the door.

"It’s the Councilor!" the response came.

When he heard that, a strange expression appeared on his face as he increased his pace.

’Why is he here?’ he couldn’t help but wonder.

Ba Susan opened the door and exited the room. His wife was no longer by the door, but already in the main hall. He followed her, and when he got there, he saw the fancy carriage which was coming to a halt in his yard.

"Husband, what do you think he is here for again?" Ma Susan curiously wondered.

It’s been a while since the man came to their village and with Calista not around, something that only a few of them knew. What more could he want?

Ba Susan was conflicted when he heard that. He didn’t have anything to talk with the councilor about. Even if he has something to say, it would be him visiting him and not the other way around.

Seeing him here, he was obviously here for Calista, but that little lass wasn’t at home. How was he supposed to deal with this matter now?

He could only grimace as he walked out of the main hall to welcome the guest.

Ma Susan didn’t bother to go outside. She was a woman and involving herself in men’s business wasn’t something that she enjoyed. Although she had been influenced by Calista for a while, she wasn’t that bold.

Ba Susan plastered a smile on his face, seeing the councilor alighting from the carriage.

"Sir Henrich!" he respectfully called to the man.

The councilor beamed at the village chief, finding him more pleasing to the eyes the more he looked at him.

Whenever he thought of the good things which had been happening to him lately because of what was happening in this village, he couldn’t help but beam.

"It’s good to see you again, village chief. I hope that you have been well!"

Ba Susan remained humble upon hearing that. He responded mildly, "Everything had been well and your side, sir?"

When the councilor heard that, he chuckled heartily while clutching his belly. "It’s perfect!"

Ba Susan was relieved when he heard that.

After exchanging pleasantries, Ba Susan brought the councilor into the main hall. Ma Susan appeared and greeted the councilor while serving some snacks before disappearing from the room.

With her gone, the two men were finally at ease to discuss other matters.

Sir Henrich suddenly passed a basket full of things to Ba Susan as he said, "I am here to drop some small gifts for Lady Solace for the children. How is she?"

When Ba Susan heard that, he sighed relievedly, finally understanding why the other person came here today.

He accepted the gifts and set them aside as he answered, "I will thank you on her behalf. She is faring well and so are the children."

The councilor was happy to hear that. "So, is it possible to meet her now?"

Ba Susan hurriedly shook his head as he answered, "I am afraid that it’s impossible. She is still in confinement. She needs to take care of her health."

When the councilor heard that, his expression darkened for a moment. He had completely forgotten that women need to be in confinement after giving birth. She had birthed twins, which meant that her condition might be serious.

He had been too hasty.

"Alas, I guess I might have gotten too excited and forgot about this. I guess that I will see her another time, then."

Ba Susan smiled politely, knowing that he had avoided another troublesome matter. Even if she wasn’t in confinement, he couldn’t meet her at all. The other wasn’t at home at all.

Since Calista wasn’t available, the councilor asked Ba Susan to show him around.

Since he was relying on this village to get his promotion, he didn’t mind supervising a bit.

Ba Susan didn’t reject him but took him around. However, he didn’t take him inside the factory and the councilor didn’t make things difficult for him. There were trade secrets and by entering there without getting Calista’s permission, he might end up pissing her off.

Who knows what she might do?

The councilor didn’t stay for a long time in the village. Once he had seen around, he left in his carriage. As he passed the Solace manor where the gates were closed tightly, he couldn’t help but wonder what she was doing there.

Before he left for real, he dropped by the wine shop and purchased two bottles of fruit wine. It didn’t make the drinker drunk to take a sip. It was the kind that he could enjoy with his wife. So, he was very fond of it.

He didn’t forget to buy some snacks that could only be found in the village for his whole family.

When it comes to snacks, there was no such thing as for kids or adults.

After getting everything, he left for real.

Back to the village, Ba Susan wiped the sweat off his forehead after sending off the councilor.

That was dangerous.

If the councilor returned after the confinement period was over and Calista wasn’t back, what more excuses would he use again?

Thinking about the several months’ wages Calista left to him, he was having a bad feeling.

Could it be that the little girl was planning on doing something dangerous and staying out for a long time?

The old man regretted being unable to be of help. He didn’t even know what kind of matters she left to solve when she was supposed to be with the children.

He hated that he couldn’t help, but at least he could hear her in other ways. That should be better, right?

After thinking like that, his mood calmed down greatly, and a smile blossomed on his face.

The day was still not over. He still has more supervising to do.

He wasn’t going to let her come back to find everything in disarray after all the trust that he had placed in him.

With that thought in mind, he happily returned to work with all the pressure pushed aside.
