Chapter 268: Chapter 268: HER IDENTITY

"Master, when I saw her, I couldn’t help but recall a certain slave."

"Oh! A slave! Now that’s interesting!" he couldn’t help but say amusingly.

There was no way that Calista would be associated with a slave. It just didn’t fit her at all. "What happened to her?"

"She was beaten to death by her masters," Shadow icily responded, making Orson flinch as he rode the horse.

He never expected that the fate of the slave would be so unfortunate. If that slave somehow reminded Shadow about Calista, wasn’t he mistaken?

There was no way a dead person could rise from the dead, right?

Sensing that his Master unlikely believed him, Shadow added, "I watched her being buried as well."

Orson was now confused, especially after hearing such. "If that’s the case, why connect Calista to the slave?"

"Because they look alike and I have a feeling that she is the same person."

"But how could that be possible? Other things might exist but rebirth or reincarnation, now that’s madness!" Orson outrightly denied such madness.

If the other person was a ghost, he might believe it slightly, but coming back to life, was pure nonsense.

Even Shadow thought so as well.

"Which is why I believe that it must be someone who was there that night or perhaps a relative," he said after a while, although a part of him still believed that the two were one person.

If that wasn’t the case, then Calista was taunting him to know the answer and perhaps deal with him later.

When Orson heard that, he felt his temples throbbing. Honestly, he didn’t know Calista’s relatives at all. No one had ever seen them before. It would make sense if her family were slaves before. Maybe she ran away, got lucky, and was in possession of the beasts.

Or perhaps she came from one of the seclusive families who lived in deep mountains and valleys. That’s why no one had ever heard about her relatives.

Or perhaps she was that slave’s ghost. But if she was a ghost, he would have felt it and she wouldn’t have given birth at all. A ghost’s energy would affect anyone who spends time close to it. And yet she had lived there for over a decade. So, the possibility of her being a ghost was removed.

After canceling everything out, the most probable and senseful reasoning would be her being a relative.

But wait a moment. How did she die in the first place? What was even the reason?

He didn’t want to suffer for something that he didn’t know. In the years he started mingling in society, he had never laid a hand on a slave. So, what was all this being said?

He could only look at Shadow coldly as he asked, "Why did that slave die? Tell me everything and don’t leave a single thing!"

At least if he was going to face her wrath, he should at least know and understand the gist of the story, right?

Shadow was surprised when he heard this question. He wasn’t expecting it at all. However, seeing how he was being invested in the story, he might as well explain what he knew, and so he did.

From what Orson gathered, he couldn’t believe such a thing.

"Is that all?"

"That’s all I can remember. It’s been a while," Shadow truthfully answered, leaving Orson with a bigger headache than the last.

He was silent for some time before he opened his mouth to say. "What we will do now is split into two groups. The other group shall be responsible for sending the girls home and the other alongside me will go to the place where this whole nonsense started.

Since you are certain you saw the girl being buried, then her bones, unless someone built in that place, should be there. As long as the grave is there, then we will rule out the fact that it’s her, but probably a relative.

If it’s a relative, then whatever narrative we give can be accepted. The dead are long gone, so we can make something and let her off our backs."

Orson, disregarding whatever identity Calista held, knew one thing for sure. If they confronted her head-on, they wouldn’t win.

He wasn’t even certain how huge those two beasts could become. What if that was just an appetizer?

With a single blow, a person could be beaten to a pulp. Would it be necessary to send his men to death like that?

If things could be negotiated, then deal it in such a manner. If it was a war that he could win, he would just send his men and wait for victory. Unfortunately, the matter was different. He didn’t dare risk it. Besides, the person in question was his children’s mother. How could he have such boldness to let anything happen to her?

He wasn’t that cruel.

When Shadow heard that, he thought that it was expected. However, his master’s words made more sense.

If he got taunted by her and sent people or even went himself, returning might be an issue. And all of that might be due to misunderstandings. So going to that city and checking for himself might come in handy.

As long as they reach there first, they would have an upper hand. There would be no way she would investigate the matter so early when her babies were still newborns, right?

There wouldn’t be such a thing, right?

Shadow, presuming that Calista would follow the norm, felt at ease for the first time in several days.

Since the instruction had been given, he started to think of the people to send off home and the others that would follow. It was better to be prepared.

As a result, when dawn broke, and everyone was resting, new groups were formed. Vaani, being the leader of the group, sends the girls as well as the medicine back to the island.

The other group would be responsible for protecting Orson, and it included six guards, including Shadow, himself.

Orson was a fighter and a master himself, so if danger really came for them, he was capable of defending himself thus a few guards.

The girls and the medicine needed more people to guard them.

With such a decision made, once resting time was done, the groups moved separately.

They all had one goal in mind, finding the truth before Calista, but would that be the case?
