"You tell me when he is here. I will check the goods. Once I find everything satisfactory, I will give you what I promised. As for what will happen after that, that won’t be any of my business. If you lose the medicine, then you are gone. I have exhausted the medicine on your family," Calista said to him, completely unaware of what was going on in Orson’s mind.

Because of the condition of the girls, she was forced to take out the last bottle. Because she couldn’t dilute it, the medicine’s level had reached a dangerous level. And now, with the medicine she promised to give Orson, it meant that the remaining medicine wouldn’t be hers as well.

So, if an accident were to happen along the way, even if she was cut into a million pieces, the medicine would be no more. At least the kind that would treat their mysterious illness. The medicine for some lesser ailments, she has some, but not for giving to that family.

Since they can’t be hers, why waste all the medicine on them?

Orson didn’t retort when he heard that. He also knew that she had done her best and had used the last bottle. If anything were to happen, there wouldn’t be much to do about it.

However, it irked him to hear how eager she was to send him away. Was he that unpleasant in her eyes?

Did all the affection between them, even when they were both faking, vanish just like that?

He didn’t want to accept it, and yet that seemed to be the case.

It truly hurts.

"I know and I will keep it in my mind!" he answered, letting out a sigh.

Since what needed to be said was said, Calista no longer spoke a thing but simply climbed down from the bed ready to continue with her program.

Orson watched as Calista did this and that before she left the bedroom completely unguarded.

With her gone, all sternness disappeared as softness replaced it.

He rose from the chair and headed towards the cot beds where his babies were sleeping.

He was a father and a man. So how could he not love his flesh and blood?

As someone who was absent during the period when Calista needed him the most, he felt awkward. He understood the importance of bonding with the child. Now that they are born, would they know that he was their father?

Or would they treat those strangers like Hayes as someone closer to them than him?

He was insecure, to be honest.

On top of that, the thought of getting closer to them and then leaving them again only to see them in the near future. He wasn’t even certain when he couldn’t bear it.

He would rather not form a closer bond, to not be hurt in the future.

He understood his job and position in the family. His loyalty was towards the family and he couldn’t jeopardize that because of love and a family.

Just like she said, something that he finally found making sense after meeting with Ma and Ba Susan a week ago. They lived a world apart and the possibility of seeing each other in a year was once. He would need to spend months on the road just to come and see her. Just being on the road, would take six to eight months, depending on the conditions of the roads or the weather.

Such kind of life, wouldn’t it be torturing? It wasn’t even healthy at all.

He couldn’t let the girls suffer so much on the road just to go and see their stepmother. He couldn’t even bear to think of these precious twins traveling that hard just to come and see him.

His life was full of danger. What if his enemies got the news of the twins and attacked them?

She was a stranger and had no bond with his family. If he takes her there, won’t she suffer?

Although he was certain that she wouldn’t, as she was someone who could stand his ground, he couldn’t risk it.

He was already powerful on his own, and his power was nearly equivalent to the chief. If he brought home a wife like Calista who could subdue ten islands like his, wouldn’t the chief look at him unkindly?

He didn’t want to lose the family he had ever known, even if it was for love.

Which was why he needed to think. And this thinking could only be done without her influence.

He needed to be somewhere far away from her. Only then could his mind operate well.

Orson looked at the children for a while longer, poked their bouncy cheeks, and grinned foolishly.

"Kids, I will be leaving in a few days, but I promise you that once I settle everything, we will be a family. Your mother will definitely be fuming once I leave, so don’t make things difficult for her. I will definitely return to you. Just give me time," he whispered to the sleeping twins as if they could hear what he was saying.

At least by saying this out loud, another boulder fell off his shoulders. He felt much better.

After making a promise he wasn’t sure when to fulfil, he kissed those cheeks with satisfaction before he left the room.

Five minutes later, Calista had finished bathing and walked into the bedroom. When she arrived, Orson was nowhere to be found.

"Tche! A bastard!" she clicked her tongue, infuriated upon seeing that he wasn’t there.

He didn’t even spare his children some time and yet have plenty to spend with the kids. How low she must have fallen to be in love with such a scoundrel.

’One day, I will get back at you! Do you think that you can mess with me and leave? Ha, you are joking!’ her eyes narrowed murderously as her lips curled upward in a sly smile.

Life was simply too long for her. She might not be able to make him behave now and she wasn’t in the right condition to pursue such matters further. However, the time shall come to pass. The kids shall grow and become adults.

Somewhere around that time, if the man didn’t come back to her, wouldn’t it be great if she just became a scoundrel?

It wasn’t like she had never done it before.

When she is old, even forcing someone wouldn’t make her feel bad. She would be doing him a favor to accompany her.

Anyway, time will tell. For now, she would focus on nurturing her children and making sure that they grow up without any danger.

Only then can she have such unbridled thoughts. Life without entertainment would be boring after all.
