Chapter 241: Chapter 241: CONFINEMENT – BREASTFEEDING 2
Seeing them interested, Calista didn’t immediately respond but ate her food a bit before continuing, "Breast milk is the best source of nutrients for babies. It contains everything that the baby needs to grow and develop.
That’s why the mother should treat herself well and eat enough. That way, enough nutrients could be passed to the child. There are cases where a mother doesn’t have enough milk to feed a baby. Being stingy sometimes can bring deadly consequences."
"It supports the baby’s health. You know how children can’t digest everything because of how small they are. The milk is easy to digest and has properties that help the babies to be protected against infections as well as boost their immunity. Babies are prone to sicknesses at a young age. By breastfeeding our babies, we can reduce the risk of infections such as ear infections, and stomach bugs from happening."
"A baby can gain weight healthily and over time, the breast milk composition will change to meet the baby’s nutritional needs over time. What the baby gets now will be different from when he or she is a month old."
"It helps to soothe the baby and the mother to lower the risk of postpartum depression. Women tend to think too much and get depressed after giving birth. The risk might be lowered by feeding our babies. So, imagine if someone else is feeding my baby, what would I do?" she shrugged her arms helplessly as she looked at the pale-faced women in front of her.
"On top of it all, when I am breastfeeding my baby, I can feed him anywhere without worry. If my baby has a wet nurse and then something happens and maybe at that time, I am no longer producing milk, what will I feed my baby?
What if the wet nurse unknowingly gets addicted to addictive substances, and that gets passed to the children? Who would you blame?
We don’t know the full health status of these people we leave our children with. At least, I will know what is wrong with me and deal with it, but what about that person? Are you confident that you know?
Just because we want to gain something by taking shortcuts, we might end up being the harbingers of death for our children." Calista’s tone was heavy when she said this.
She remembered in one of the worlds she transmigrated to. It was an ancient setting. In that world, to deal with the first wife’s child, the concubine who failed to attack the child while he was still in the womb, used the wet nurse to deal with him.
The concubine just let the wet nurse unknowingly eat things that she wasn’t supposed to eat. When she fed the baby, the baby was a goner. She remembered how the crime was later unveiled and the people involved punished. But what was the use? The baby died miserably when he had never done wrong.
In such a case, would it be wise to blame the wet nurse?
That would be unfair as well. After all, most wet nurses were women who would be forced to abandon their children and give their children’s portion of milk to another. Weren’t they pitiful already?
Anyway, looking at how scared the women were, she felt that this topic was brought up at a good time.
Let’s see if they would keep on bothering her about the issue in the future.
"I am not done yet," she said with a chuckle after sipping some soup.
How could they be scared of just this when she was just starting?
’There is more again?’ the women felt dread as they looked at her.
Calista grinned innocently as if she wasn’t seeing the women’s reactions. Who told them to provoke her in the first place?
"What I fear the most when it comes to my child is the lack of bond between us." This was quite a serious matter.
Even the other women nodded, as they knew how that might be deadly and frustrating as well.
"Imagine you give birth to your child and he doesn’t recognize you despite the time that you spend with him. How could you feel?" she asked seriously as she looked at the others.
"That would be awful!"
"Unbearable!"
"Unacceptable!"
The women’s eyes were blazing red with fury as they answered, their voices lowered since they were afraid of waking the babies.
Calista smiled as she listened to the answers.
"It’s bad, isn’t it?" she asked playfully, a mischievous smile on her lips.
The women nodded, their faces dark at the thought of such a thing happening.
"That’s exactly what happens when you don’t have time to breastfeed your child. Not only does your child have a wet nurse, but has several nannies as well. With them spending more time with your child, when would you spend time with him?" she asked, a drumstick in hand, ready to be eaten.
The women sighed ruefully as they analyzed the situation. The answer was embarrassing to even mention.
"None! You won’t have much time at all. And that would be detrimental to your bonding session with your kids. So, while you breastfeed your child, you can use that time to connect to your child and bond with him.
As you feed your baby, you can learn to read their cues and behaviors. Besides, kids tend to trust their caregivers. That can help you shape your baby’s early behavior. If you leave this chance to your wet nurse, beware of raising a bear child or a child molded to how the caregiver wants."
She had seen in another world how a child, though not an infant, was influenced greatly by the nanny who raised him.
The parents were busy earning money and ditched the responsibility of the nanny. As a result, the nanny held over the power to control the child and it took a lot of effort to let the child see the light when he grew up.
She, for one, didn’t want her children to be molded by someone else, even their father. Where was he when she was suffering alone?
Seeing the women’s complexion getting bad, Calista suddenly felt sorry for the ladies, she knew that it was time to stop scaring them.
"Lastly, don’t you think that it’s cheaper to breastmilk? Hehe!" she asked with a chuckle, all the sternness from her disappearing completely.
The women, who were dark a while ago, found themselves chuckling and snorting.
"It’s indeed cheaper!" Ma Susan answered softly as she recalled how she didn’t have many expenses when she was raising her kids.
Life was tough back then, luckily the kids needed to drink her milk and the food would be left for adults.
Of course, when the kids started eating solid food, that’s where the problem started, but that was another issue.
Calista’s eyes lit up as she thumped Ma Susan up and said in agreement, "It is indeed cheap. As long as you are well fed, then the kid will have his meal. Costs such as finding a goat for milk, or buying milk daily or paying the wet nurse, won’t exist," explaining in summary about the last benefit she found very convincing and reasonable.
How could one incur costs when the food was on you?
