Chapter 227: ANOTHER BANQUET
Chapter 227: Chapter 227: ANOTHER BANQUET
Calista’s love for banquets once again got pricked when Hayes’s family members came.
To celebrate the arrival of the guests, she decided to host another banquet.
And when preparing for this banquet, she didn’t forget to invite someone who had helped her greatly, Sir Henrich, the councilor.
This man had been busy doing his best to help her business in many ways that he could. With the arrival of someone from a big city, if she invited him, she was certain that the man could make another connection.
Maybe one day, it would help him and her as well. Who knows how life could be in the future?
When the invitation was sent, it was time for her to prepare for the banquet.
The third day after their arrival, it wasn’t raining and didn’t seem to likely rain later either way.
With such weather, Calista decided to go out and do some fishing. It’s been a while since she ate fish and she was craving it again.
It seems like she craves it more when she wants to host banquets, but it is fine. As long as she eats it, who cares about other matters?
Knowing that she would be going fishing later, the maids hurriedly prepared everything that needed to be prepared.
Lately, there hasn’t been any fishing done near the village. Even Arnold and his crew had to move a distance to fish.
She was also planning to do the same. All the preparations were made and carriages were set.
Once that was done, Calista and Madam Fischer boarded one carriage with the mammies, while Hayes, Jeremy and Orson were on their horses.
The girls took another carriage with a few maids. As kids, they couldn’t travel with the elders. They had a lot to talk about.
To reach the spot where she wanted to fish was more than an hour’s journey, and that provided a lot of time for the two ladies to talk.
Besides, there was someone else accompanying them in the carriage, and the third guest was currently in Madam Fischer’s arms.
Calista scoffed as she looked at the soundly snoring Whitey and wondered how he managed to make this iron lady like him so much?
Was it because she didn’t know what he was like really for her to treat Whitey like that?
She didn’t know, and just thinking about it, her temples throbbed.
After making everyone get used to Whitey and Blackey, the villagers were no longer scared of the two. As a result, the talks and whispers about the monsters also died down.
When Madam Fischer arrived, the fear had died down. Because of that, the news might have slipped from her.
On their way to the river, the two were talking intimately, like best friends. Rather than seeing her as her godmother, which would force her to treat the other respectfully, Calista looked at Madam Fischer like a sister or a friend. It made things interesting that way.
Who said that a person can’t have a sister who is much older than her?
"Do you have any thoughts of getting married again?" Madam Fischer, who by now made Calista call her by her maiden name, Kiara asked curiously as she caressed the kitten’s fur.
Calista’s brows arched as she got into a daze, digesting the question.
After a moment of thinking, she looked at Madam Fischer and answered, "Honestly, sister Kiara, I have never thought about it. When I married my first husband over a decade ago, I thought that we were going to live with each other for years. At least by the time he joins his ancestors and gets taken by the deities, I would be having grey hair. But alas, who would have known that it was just five years, and he was gone?" recalling John, Calista couldn’t help but shake her head pitifully.
Kiara, seeing that, couldn’t help but wonder what kind of man John was for her to be like that. If she wasn’t mistaken, Calista was sixteen or seventeen around the time she married him.
"I am curious. How was your marriage with him? From the rumors I heard, you lived a bit tough because of the first wife and children!"
She understood that polygamy wasn’t an easy thing at all, especially for young girls. It was stressful for adults but for a young girl to face off with a village woman who grew up fighting bears and was stronger than a city girl, and one with kids. It must have been tough.
Hearing such a question, Calista couldn’t help but chuckle heartily. "It wasn’t easy, but you know, love is blind. When I first saw him, and he helped me wholeheartedly without expecting anything from me. I told myself that it was him. I was going to follow him and make him mine!" with an obsessive smile on her face, Calista reencountered.
Seeing that kind of smile on her face, Madam Fischer couldn’t help but shudder.
"At that time, it didn’t matter if he was married, widowed or having a family. I just knew that I must be part of his family. And surely, I joined it. Even if it wasn’t smooth sailing, the fact that he was there with me made life perfect for me.
I don’t have a family, so joining such a large family made me appreciate it. I know that I couldn’t force people to like me. As long as we were one, who cares about what they think?" she shrugged her shoulders, thinking back to what it was in the past.
Madam Fischer nodded as she understood what the other was talking about. At times, people tend to be selfish. Sometimes being selfless can only kill the person in question. It doesn’t hurt to be selfish once in a while.
"Unfortunately, he still died. Bandits, beasts and everything happened. Before I knew it, I was a widow. At such a young age, I was literally baffled, but that’s life. We can’t stop death when it comes!" Calista gave an empty laugh as she recalled how crazy it was for her back then.
She was completely possessed. She really mourned John for three good years. Even his first wife wasn’t that dedicated.
Madam Fischer listened to the story with relish, and couldn’t help but applaud Calista for her dedication.
