Chapter 171: SHATTERED HEART
Chapter 171: Chapter 171: SHATTERED HEART
When he looked at that bulging belly that was so visible and couldn’t be hidden anymore, he felt as if someone was squeezing his heart and wanted to rip it out.
Having the woman that he loved so much from first sight carrying that bastard child and loving that child so much after getting abandoned, he felt so much hatred. Not for her, but for the bastard who was a coward and ran away from such a woman.
How could a sane man leave such a capable woman?
After observing Calista for more than a month, he realized and accepted that she wasn’t looking for love at all. She just wanted to raise her child, give him or her a home, and make the village prosper.
Nothing fazes her, the wealth and everything, the lady seemed to have it all. She was just low-key, and facing such a lady like that, how could he even convince her that he liked her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her?
Even if he were to confess and she agreed, would his family agree to something like that?
She wasn’t just married once, but twice. And her first husband died and there were whispers about his death. He had heard these villagers speaking. And every time they spoke, it wasn’t like they were speaking ill of Calista but rather mocking the Nicosa villagers who were fawning over the Cropville villagers when they were the ones who used to stomp on Calista the most.
If his family were to find out about her past and background, Ian shuddered at the thought of what they might do to her and the village that she loved the most.
He wasn’t as powerful as he thought. The more he analyzed his situation, the more he stayed in the village.
His parents might have granted him freedom to follow Diana and do what he wanted, but at the end of the day, he won’t be able to escape his fate.
The elders always arrange the children’s future and marriage. Being unfilial was deadly for scholars like him. It might even affect his future if he ever wants to work for the government.
When faced with the issue of the heart and filial piety, Ian knew what he would choose. And he didn’t want to be a bad guy in the eyes of the first woman he had ever loved in his life.
And to continue watching her. As that belly grew, he knew that he couldn’t do it. he had tried his best but his mind was starting to get stranger. So, before he fell for his demons and became a friend, he knew he had to take drastic measures.
And that was the main reason why he came to see her today.
But would she be able to take it calmly and do as he hope?
He couldn’t help but feel worried and anxious.
Unfortunately, Calista wasn’t a mind reader, so she had no idea what Ian was thinking about.
As soon as she sat down, she looked at the scones on the plate and thought of which scone to pick and eat. After having the kitchen bake three types of scones that morning, apple flavored, orange flavored and original flavor (the one without any additions); her mind couldn’t decide.
She was too greedy for everything and her mind already wandering to try other recipes. There were so many fruits available for her taste, and her tastebuds seemed to be dancing.
So how could she notice that Ian’s gaze on her was complicated?
Seeing the others concentrating more on what was on the plate, Ian couldn’t help but mock himself inwardly.
How did he forget this heartless lady?
She acts as if she is ignorant, and yet she knows everything. Just look at her, focusing more on food, when a fine grown-ass man was sitting in front of her.
Was he so unattractive that he couldn’t even trigger a reaction from her?
When he thought of the ladies back in Altville City who would go crazy just seeing his face, he felt very ancient in front of Calista.
In his city, his smile, his poems, his stories and even his mere presence were enough to make several ladies have nosebleeds. And yet in front of this lady, he didn’t even compare to food?
Paaaaaa.
He could hear the sound of his heart shattering, all hope, the tiny glint of it remaining shattering at this moment.
This wasn’t something that he could win and even thought of encouraging himself to persevere and do his best.
Even Diana told him the same. Try your best, confess your feelings and she might waver. But did this seem like a person who could waver?
He didn’t have a chance, that was something very certain.
Whoever that Orson was, that person was someone that he wanted to see desperately. And see what kind of man he was to make Calista like this and turn her into a heartless vixen who knows to attract trouble left and right and yet remain ignorant about it.
He found the man very displeasing to the eyes.
Unfortunately, opportunities to see him might be slim. After all, he came today with a mission, and one he still wasn’t sure what the outcome would be.
He just hoped that everything would run smoothly. It would be awkward to part on bad terms. He didn’t want to mess up the relationship he had with him, although he wouldn’t be able to get her heart.
Meanwhile, on Calista’s side, after a long deliberation, she decided to pick the apple-flavored scone first and eat it.
The day before yesterday she started with the orange one, so it was only fair if she started with the apple one today. Next time, if she hadn’t baked other flavors, she was going to start with the original flavor.
Wasn’t she fair when dealing with things?
Hahahaha.
She couldn’t help but feel smug as she raised her head to look at Ian.
However, as her gaze locked with the other, her mood suddenly plummeted as she saw something that made her feel agitated.
’What kind of horror is this man thinking about?’
’He didn’t come here with good news, did he?’
Suddenly, the bad premonition started becoming strong, and she didn’t like the feeling at all.
Even the mood to eat the scones vanished.
