Chapter 152: Chapter 152: HE IS HERE!
As the ladies gossiped, the guests for Ba Susan alighted from the carriage, revealing who they were.
Ba Susan was already outside, wearing a fawning expression and anyone could see that whoever this person was, it was someone of greater importance.
"Sir, welcome to our humble village!" Ba Susan respectably welcomed the man dressed in silk in front of him.
The man smiled kindly at Ba Susan, as he responded, "Thank you. Your village is thriving!" and praised him sincerely.
Since he saw the better part of the village from the maid road until here, he felt very satisfied with the village. It didn’t look as backwards as what other people always said.
Although he was the councilor, he barely went around to check the villages. The villagers came to him and not the other way around.
He was recruited from the city. So how could he know the happenings in the villages?
If it wasn’t for the news spreading through the grapevine about what the famous Calista was doing for her village, he wouldn’t even remember that a village like Cropville existed.
It was a village, just like the other villages, where people were so poor. It was even hard for them to make a living. Living a life where those who came to him or saw officials always bring something, these people couldn’t even afford a simple bribe.
And for people like that, they tend to be ignored.
He wasn’t greedy when he first started, but as time went on, he couldn’t help it. He was stuck in such a backward place, and who knew when he could upgrade and move further?
When he was losing hope, Calista, like a heavenly-sent blessing, started developing in the village.
He didn’t dare doubt it when he heard it. Anyone with a discerning eye could tell that she wasn’t a pushover. As someone who carried an air that even surpassed those who grew up and lived in the cities, he would be a fool to think that she was a simple villager.
There was another reason why he found it easy to remember who Calista was. Calista was pretty, resourceful, luxurious and very sharp-tongued.
A lot of men suffered because of her. She was so direct; she didn’t wait until later to solve all grievances. Those who wooed her suffered so much that all men interested in her didn’t dare show affection again.
Having such a character who didn’t mind tarnishing her name by exposing such scandalous things, how could he not know her?
At home, he even suffered for a few days with his wife because of that issue. Thinking that Calista might enchant him, she was at it for days, he nearly grew callouses in his ears.
And after a very long time, he was finally going to see her. He wondered what she looked like now.
The last time he saw her, it was from a distance. He simply saw a blur.
Ba Susan brought the councilor into the house and Ma Susan served some refreshments before leaving, allowing the men to talk privately.
"I hope that you traveled safely!" Ba Susan politely said, initiating a conversation and at the same time earnestly hoping that the councilor traveled well.
Seeing how he was here early in the morning; he must have left before the sun rose and when it was dark. That was quite dangerous.
The councilor smiled. "Um, the journey was well. Thanks for asking!"
"That’s good, then!" Ba Susan was worried.
With all pleasantries out of the way, the councilor didn’t beat around the bush and asked directly, "Chief, when can I see her?" his eyes sparkling with interest.
Ba Susan faintly smiled upon hearing that. If he wasn’t mistaken, Calista should be awake now and probably starting her chores.
With how grumpy she can be in the morning, who knows if she could throw fireworks at him if he dared go to find her now?
After spending a lot of time not going to the restaurant because of her condition, she was getting grumpy as each day passed. He feared her in that state.
"For now, I am afraid that it won’t be possible. She should be waking up right now and you know pregnant people!" he apologetically replied, hoping that the councilor wouldn’t take it on him. "But once she is done, she will send someone. She promised to make a feast for you."
When the councilor heard that, he felt furious inside, especially at the first part. Since when did he wait for others?
People waited for him and not the other way around. He even traveled all the way here to see her, and yet he had to wait for her. But then he heard the next part. He instantly cooled down.
Women can be troublesome, and he couldn’t barge into her manor. it was a household led by a woman and with what he knew, there were barely men seen anywhere in her manor except the masons building the rest of the house.
If he forced her and got on her bad side, who knows what she might do?
For people like Calista, until you milk them of their potential, it is dangerous to tie them down. They can easily immigrate and by the time he realizes that she is gone, it would be too late.
At least with her ideas, the district will improve, and so will the town. All these achievements would be noted down under his name, though that would benefit the officials above him. But to him, as long as he achieved something, that would be a good thing.
So, no matter what, keeping his cool was a must.
In the end, he accepted Ba Susan’s explanation. Since they had to wait for Calista to send someone, he suggested checking the village out.
He wanted to see the changes himself and see the impact they have on the villagers.
When Ba Susan heard that, he was on his feet already. Ready to show him everywhere.
Besides, seeing it in advance would lessen the burden on Calista. Ba Susan couldn’t have her running around in her situation.
That baby, he was looking forward to holding it when it was born. He can’t let anything happen to Calista, not on his watch.
