Chapter 151: FRUIT CAKES
Chapter 151: Chapter 151: FRUIT CAKES
The next morning, after waking up early, Calista started her chores.
This was a special day, one where she was going to introduce cakes and hoped that those who would taste it would like it.
Due to insufficient tools, she had to make do with what she had at the moment. Later, she would instruct the blacksmiths to make her what she needed. This way she can bake the cakes whenever she feels like it.
Although it wouldn’t be the same as what it might be if she had modern tools, Calista was just happy at the thought of being able to eat a cake.
Besides, it wasn’t like the modern people conjured all those methods from nowhere. They simply improved what the ancients did. And she just needed to improvise on that since she lacked a lot of ingredients that could make the cakes even better.
Making the sponge was definitely the easiest for her. And since her fruits were fresh, there was no mixing with the dough when she made it.
Calista had white sugar, lard, wooden whisker, flour, eggs, orange juice, apple juice and bowls.
"Lady, what do you want to do with those?" Mammy Lena couldn’t help but ask curiously as she looked at these.
She had eaten cakes before, but never saw them baked. The dessert shop in their city only sold the cakes, and the recipes were secured very tightly. It was hard to even hear a tidbit of how the cakes might be made.
So, she was quite curious about everything. After all, it was already shocking enough to see Calista starting the cake fresh without fearing the recipe getting stolen or something.
Calista, on the other hand, never cared about much, especially in front of the people she trusted with her life.
Although it might not look like it, these people who lived with her were trusted. Otherwise, she wouldn’t dare bring them anywhere near her home. Why should she risk her unborn child by bringing these people with her?
Picking the bowl with the lard, Calista glanced at Mammy Lena briefly before answering, "I want to make a dough of the cakes! Pretty simple, right?"
When Mammy Lena heard that, her eyes lit up as it dawned on her. Although she had eaten cakes before, she had never seen them getting baked at all. She was quite curious if the method was the same as that used to bake bread.
She had at least seen bread getting baked.
To think that her lady knew how to make it, she couldn’t help but be excited.
Calista, seeing that Mammy Lena got a hang of it, began to soften the lard. She used her hands instead of the whisker at a low speed until it was soft and had a slightly whipped look.
After doing so, she gradually started adding sugar to the whipped lard at a gradual speed. This allowed the air bubbles to form and strengthen.
When the mixture nearly doubled in volume, Calista stopped beating.
She broke the eggs, added the apple juice, and whisked them in a separate bowl until they were mixed well. She then added the egg mixture to the lard and sugar mixture afterwards.
When that was done, she started adding the dry ingredients and flour to that mixture and mixing until the dough was completed.
Once that process was done, the dough was poured into the chosen pot for baking and sent into the oven to start baking.
She repeated the same process for the orange-flavored cake under the learning eyes of the servants.
When the job was done, Calista felt liberated. It wasn’t an easy thing to eat delicious food after all.
She didn’t have any ingredients to make the icing for the cakes, so she was going to stop here and hope that in the future she would be able to do so.
Besides, even if she couldn’t eat the kind of cake she wanted now, there was still a variety of bread that she could make to cater to her needs and those of customers.
Instead of just providing lunch which would be taken as dinner, why not offer breakfast menus as well?
This way, she would keep her customers and give them a reason to come back for more.
And like any other day, she won’t publicize the menu. She would have the bakery make what should be baked and let the customers see what is there when they come.
Only that way would she be able to keep the element of surprise and wow them every single time.
While the cakes were baking, Calista moved to the next dishes.
The councilor was supposed to arrive at any moment and she needed to have something prepared. This way she wouldn’t let him wait for long.
To welcome the councilor, Calista planned to add fish. She has a few in the icehouse and preparing for a small banquet wouldn’t hurt her pantry.
Since other foods her people could cook already, she didn’t need to take over the pots. All she needed to do was tell them what to cook, and the job was done.
When they were busy with the pots, Calista kept an eye on her cakes, making sure that nothing would go wrong.
If they get burnt, there would be no road to return. Starting afresh would be impossible. Time wasn’t waiting for anyone at all.
***
While Calista was busy with her pots, a carriage entered the village, making the villagers wonder if Calista had received another guest again.
However, the carriage passed by Calista’s manor and entered the village, stopping only when it reached the chief’s house.
Seeing the carriage stopping there, the gossiping ladies found something to do that morning.
"I wonder which relative of the chief came today!"
"Hehe, why should they be relatives? Maybe it’s someone who wasn’t to have a business deal with us?"
"What do we have?"
"We have madam Solace, don’t we?"
"That’s true!"
