Chapter 145: Chapter 145: APPLES

With the news of the shortage of medicine, Calista couldn’t ignore it at all.

These villagers had started relying on the clinic a lot. Although there wasn’t much profit made from running it, the fact that everyone was doing well was enough to make the anger disappear.

She didn’t dare let the clinic run without medicine for long, so after learning of the news, she had Lisa prepare for the trip to get some herbs and all the medicines needed.

She was a knowledgeable person, so she would know where to find what. So, she simply gave Lisa money, hired Susan’s husband to drive Lisa where she wanted to go, and left the burden on her shoulders.

With the medicine issue being taken care of by Lisa, Calista decided to try her luck as well.

Waiting for Diana was becoming a bit burdensome, so having a walk and getting more fresh air would help.

She was a lucky person. Who knows what she might pick if she takes a walk?

This time, she didn’t believe that she would pick a person.

She just wanted a wild animal. It’s been a long time since she ate one.

With that in mind, she prepared for her outing and Mammy Lena was equipped to the teeth.

When Calista left that morning after breakfast, she was with Mammy Lena and two servants who were carrying baskets with water and food to eat later.

Dressed casually while fanning herself, Calista felt that life wasn’t actually that bad.

Although she was scammed by Orson in the end, life didn’t turn out that badly.

Thinking about Orson, Calista felt no energy to be angry at him.

This was him giving her a taste of her own medicine.

She pulled one on him, and he returned several folds at her. How vicious of him?

"Lady, is it always this quiet and serene as this?"

As they walked at a steady pace in the forest, Mammy Lena asked curiously after seeing how this forest was different from the ones she knew.

Calista nodded as she glanced at Mammy Lena for a brief moment before looking to the front.

"Um. This is why I like this place. There are no fierce wild beasts that can threaten our lives here. You can walk around at ease and if you are lucky, come across an injured rabbit or pheasant!" a smile blossoming on her face, as she thought of the small animals that would end up in her way whenever she took walks.

It wasn’t like they offered themselves, but there were her babies who loved causing trouble and at times gave her alms and showed their filial piety in a variety of ways.

Of course, there were times when these animals would magically come to her and offer themselves just like that, which wasn’t a bad thing. After all, no one dislikes more meat.

When Mammy Lean heard that, she couldn’t help but look at Calista strangely. ’Was that really possible?’

However, it proved to be real as moments later, a rabbit suddenly ran into the tree, ramming itself unconscious in the process.

Seeing that, Mammy Lena couldn’t help but look at the grinning Calista who was looking at her with an, ’I told you so’

look.

"Pick up our prey. Tonight, let’s have rabbit stew!" Calista said excitedly as she looked at the sacrificial lamb that ran into her today.

Who didn’t love eating rabbit meat?

It was simply so delicious.

"Yes, my lady!" the two maids accented before hurrying to pick up the rabbit and putting it in one of the baskets.

The entourage continued to move further and, during this time, Calista wasn’t idle.

Another reason she entered the forest was to search for herbs.

Picking herbs was cheaper than buying them. However, to be safe, she had Lisa buy them. After all, there was no guarantee that she might find what she wanted.

As she walked into the forest, her eyes suddenly lit up as she spotted a familiar tree and rather familiar fruits.

’What were those doing here?’ she couldn’t help but wonder excitedly as she swiftly changed directions heading that way.

After a short walk, Calista was standing in front of an apple tree.

To think that she would get to see such a tree so close to her home and yet she had never seen it before, she felt excited.

She didn’t care where it popped up from. What mattered were the green apples in the tree, looking very big and juicy.

"My lady, what are these?" upon seeing the strange fruits, Mammy Lena asked, bewildered just looking at them.

Calista grinned sheepishly, seeing that Mammy Lena didn’t know about apples. Having Mammy Lena not know something was truly a wonderful thing.

This lady knew too much. She wasn’t even given time to brag at all.

"Hehe, these are called apples and are pretty good!" Calista responded as she reached her hand to pluck one from the tree.

When Mammy Lena heard that, she was even more puzzled. She had never heard anything about apples before. She felt puzzled as she watched Calista wipe the apple on her dress before "crunch" biting into the unknown fruit.

By the time she realized what had happened, Calista was already chewing the unknown fruit.

"My lady you....." Mammy Lena exclaimed fearfully as her hand moved fast to snatch the apple from Calista’s hands, but who was Calista?

With swift movements of her own, Calista dodged Mammy Lena’s attack and happily took another bite under the glaring of the other.

"Don’t worry. These won’t kill me. Unless the deity wants me dead this time, I won’t die easily!" Calista shamefully boasted making the other puff her cheeks angrily.

"You .... Let us taste first before doing it yourself. What if ....?" Mammy Lena was so angry that she didn’t dare think of the consequences.

Calista seeing that felt pretty touched that Mammy Lena’s thoughts were like that.

However, her mind on the other hand was a bit different, "Mammy, I am not a queen and definitely not a superior being who sees other people’s lives as nothing!" she said as she shook her head confusing Mammy Lena who had no idea what she wanted to say. "I will not let another person taste poison for me. What if there is and the tester dies? Won’t that make a murderer!?"

Just thinking about how these noble and aristocratic families treat their slaves, Calista’s expression darkened.

Seeing slaves as if they weren’t people who deserved to live and that all unbearable things should go to them, Calista wasn’t going to treat them like that and to that extent.

Mammy Lena was silenced as she listened to Calista’s remarks. She didn’t know whether to be touched or concerned with how Calista thought.

However, on the other side, the two maids felt very touched listening to that.

Their lady had treated them well from the beginning and hearing her talking about that, they even felt more loved.

They had never been treated like that before and to have a mistress who saw them as people and not just mere things or slaves that could be used to their hearts’ content; they felt grateful that they caught her attention that day.

With Mammy Lena silenced, Calista didn’t need to worry about the other bothering her for a while.
