Chapter 144: Chapter 144: BARTER TRADING 2

Some brought her vegetables, tomatoes, and tomatoes.

For fruits, there were litchis, bananas and grapes.

These were mainly found by venturing far into the mountains and the wild. So, these villagers always kept them to themselves and barely ate them.

And yet this time they sacrificed to exchange them for fish. This showed the power of fish for Cropville villagers.

"Sort them out and have them stored appropriately!" Calista instructed as she pointed at the eggs, talking to Mammy Lena.

The other nodded, acknowledging the instruction before looking at the fruits and asking, "And these?"

Calista looked at the fruits which weren’t many and pondered for a bit before responding, "For the grapes and litchis, let’s make some juice, and store it in the icehouse! And the bananas, they aren’t a lot. Put them in my room and leave me two to eat for now!" setting her eyes on the yellow bananas, looking very appetizing.

Mammy Lena acknowledged once again. There was nothing wrong with this instruction.

So, she quickly got into action, instructing the servants on what to do.

As for those who weren’t doing anything, Calista had them deal with the fish.

Calista wasn’t planning on eating fish every day.

Only when she craves it would she think of eating it.

So, when the fish was cleaned, she set aside some to give to Ian and Ma Susan.

With the remaining fish, she separated it into two.

The other was to be sent into the ice house. This way it can keep its freshness. Whenever she felt like eating it, she would just take one and cook it instead of going to the river.

she was going dry some, this way in the future, she can have dried fish stew. It was a delicious dish as well.

To dry the fish, she wasn’t even going to use a complicated process, but the easiest one out there. dry the fish in the sun.

When the fish to be iced was sent to the ice house, the one to be dried was cut open in two. Salt was sprinkled on it evenly before a mat was laid in the sun.

The fish was neatly placed on the meat with the sun kissing the fish. If left under the sun for three to four days, the fish would naturally dry and last for a while.

If she was in the modern world, this process might not even need the whole day.

Unfortunately, this was her world and there was nothing that she could do about it.

When Susan, Naomi and the other restaurant workers came to the manor, the pork was taken out of the ice house and they started preparing it.

To serve the customers faster, all ingredients were prepared a day before. This way, when the restaurant opens the next day, they would start cooking straight away without wasting time.

And menus were discussed in advance, so it was easier for them to do the preparation.

With the chunks of belly pork in front of them, Susan and the rest knew that there was a lot of work to be done.

Thankfully, something that they were already used to.

After all, every day, all the leftovers go into their stomachs.

Where else would they find such a generous boss?

It was a busy day for everyone; however, everyone was all smiles.

After all, there was fish for dinner.

***

In the following days, Calista’s life was in full bloom.

The restaurant’s customers really loved the fish and sent their coachmen to urge her to make more fish dishes.

This was something that she was willing to do as well. however, she didn’t have time to go to the river all the time.

At the same time, she didn’t trust to send just anyone to the river with her special baits. What if something happens?

So, after some thought, she decided to have Arnold and his crew do the fishing for her under one of her maids’ supervisions. This way, no fish would be left unaccounted for.

With the boys doing that job for her, she promised the loyal eaters that she would provide fish twice every week. One meal with stewed fish and the other with roasted fish.

People can’t just have roasted fish all the time. Oil wasn’t like water. Besides, a variety wouldn’t hurt.

With the new menu successfully added, Calista had other things to worry about.

Judging by how long it might take for Diana to return with what she wanted, that time might be enough for her to have other things prepared on her side.

Thinking like that, Calista in the days that followed was busy as a bee.

Calista decided to buy sugarcane in advance from the farmers when it was still cheap.

Once these people learned of what she wanted to do, she was certain that the prices would rise unreasonably and she didn’t want to be used.

So, she had Ba Susan send messages throughout the district and those who still have sugarcane come over to her village.

Meeting with those people and checking whether there was indeed sugarcane took a very long time, but the time used was all worth it.

Without her knowing, weeks passed just like that. however, in her hands, she held the contracts and the sugarcanes were hers.

When the machines arrived, it wouldn’t be too long before she could produce her own sugar and start selling.

It was just a matter of time.

In life, however, there was no such thing as resting.

After finishing dealing with the sugarcane issue, Lisa, the one in charge of the village’s clinic, came to her with a piece of disturbing news.

"The medicine is finished. We can’t find anything in the forest or mountains. I have tried checking but I am afraid that we have run out of luck. We need to restock!" Lisa informed her with a guilty and apologetic smile on her face.

When Calista saw the empty storage room, she couldn’t help but feel frustrated as well.

Why didn’t she tell her this a while ago?

Did she think that the mountains were open to everyone and that they would spit out herbs just because someone walked through them?

How could Lisa be so .....?

Just thinking about it, Calista felt her temples throbbing.
