Chapter 140: FEAST
Chapter 140: Chapter 140: FEAST
Mammy Lena was excited. She never thought that fishing could be that easy like that.
As Arnold and the boys transferred the fish into the fish, she looked at Calista with a complicated gaze.
Staying by Calista’s side had made her see a lot of crazy things. The kitten was a demon in the cat’s skin, the spiritual kind. And her lady tends to take things out of nowhere and her medicines are top-notch.
Even that divine doctor she saw treating her original lady didn’t have such medicine like that.
The fish were given normal bait, in fact, the kind of bait that wouldn’t make them this crazy and yet like fools, they sent themselves to death doors.
It was simply mysterious.
Calista, on the other hand, nodded satisfactorily as she watched the first barrel getting filled quickly like that.
With how it was going, she might as well let the maids bring more barrels. This way, she would have enough for herself, the restaurant and maybe a few for the villagers.
Tomorrow she would fish for others.
With that thought in mind, when the barrel was full, she sent the maids back to the manor to bring more barrels.
After putting in more bait, she let Arnold put the baskets in the same spots again.
The news of Calista catching fish in a short while quickly spread, causing some of the nosy villagers to rush to the river where they watched an exciting drama.
Ian was one of the spectators who came after finishing his class. When he arrived, Calista was dealing with the last batch of the harvest of the day.
It’s been a few hours since she started, and she was starving. Besides, she had caught enough and there were too many people now.
With several barrels filled with fish, Calista was in a happy mood. She could see herself feasting on fish already. She was salivating.
As the maids packed, since there were volunteers to carry the barrels back home, Calista spotted Ian, looking very gentlemanly and scholarly.
"There you are!" she called out to him cheerfully.
This was a friend she liked talking to, sharing ideas with and learning more from him. He was like a sponge that had absorbed so much and kept on giving out something whenever squeezed.
Ian, standing tall, roughly around 1.78m tall, just a few centimeters taller than her, was handsome and very calm like a river.
He wasn’t as tall as Orson, but he had his own perks, which she liked.
Unfortunately, she met with him after Orson, so she didn’t feel her heart race the way it did.
Looking at the young man who always does his best to suppress and hide the desire in his heart, Calista found him very reserved, conservative and above all patient.
He was very dedicated as well in his own ways, and that made her like him more, in a brotherly manner.
Love was simply a hassle and a game she didn’t even want to play.
Ian smiled as he approached Calista, amused at how in such a short time she could manage to cause such a frenzy like that.
"Um. I am done with my lessons. How are you feeling?" he asked as his gaze landed on her belly despite not seeing how big the bulge had become.
With the kind of dresses these women wear, seeing anything would be that difficult.
Calista smiled as she placed her hand on her slightly bulging belly and answered, "All is well. Thank you for asking!"
Ian forced a smile on his face as he responded, "That’s good. Anyway, what are you planning to do with the fish?" he asked, changing the topic.
Hearing that question, Calista beamed as she raised her feet to start walking, answering in the process, "I want to make a fish banquet tonight. The other fish will be added to the menu tomorrow and if there are extras, I will barter trade with the villagers," revealing her plans to him.
Ian nodded as he finally understood why she was fishing like crazy like that.
He had heard of the news of how she was going to trade with the villagers, but he didn’t think that she wanted to sell fish at the restaurant as well.
He had heard from the villagers on the way to the river about how a great cook Calista was. How her fish were heavenly and very rare.
He had eaten a few dishes she had cooked before, but with the servants around, she no longer cooked. Which he found a pity, but understandable as well.
She was pregnant and doing a lot of work during these trying times wouldn’t be advisable, especially when she was expecting her first age.
She was a bit older and a lot of women her age already has several children. So, taking more precautions wasn’t that strange.
"You will be adding fish to the menu tomorrow?"
"Um. I will. Interested in reserving a meal?" Calista teased Ian as they walked away from the river, her mood very light.
Ian chuckled as he looked forward and hummed, "Um. I want to reserve one. Is that allowed?"
Calista beamed as she turned to look at him and cheerfully responded, "Sure. You can do so. I will have Susan keep one box for you!"
Ian clasped his hands together as he looked at her with a smile and playfully responded, "Then I will rely on you!"
"Hehehe, that’s the spirit!"
The two chatted, laughed and ignored the several gazes fixated on them until they reached the manor.
At the manor, Calista instructed the kids who helped her carry the fish back home to gently transfer the fish into a larger tub as she counted her harvest.
After a while, Calista tallied the whole number of fish. She had managed to catch one hundred and ten fish. Others are palm-sized and others are slightly bigger than that.
She distributed the extra ten fish to the boys who had helped before sending them away.
With the extra people gone, it was time for her to get busy.
Counting the number of people, she needed to feed, it wasn’t that many. There was her, the five servants, Mammy Lena, Ian and his two servants.
It was just the ten of them, but there were other people like the Dickens family she didn’t dare exclude from this feast. If she added that family, then the total number would reach twenty.
With the number tallied, now she needed to know how many fish she was going to cook for the feast.
To have a variety, she wanted to make stew and roasted fish.
For roasted fish, she loved having a full fish, so that meant that twenty fish already. However, she won’t be taking the large fish but the small sizes.
For stew, she would pick the big fish. Five of them would be sufficient.
Which means that she would have seventy-five fish for the restaurant tomorrow.
There would be a lot of fish for the customers to eat tomorrow.
