Chapter 124: Chapter 124: REVEALING THE NEWS

While sitting at the high table, Calista tapped the cup with a spoon, drawing every attendee’s attention towards her and going silent as well.

Seeing that all eyes were on her, Calista smiled as she opened her mouth, her ethereal voice when not yelling reaching everyone.

"Thank you once again for gracing me with your presence. It means a lot to have all of you with me, celebrating this day together and with all of you wishing me well!" even if they didn’t wish her well, what could they do?

"It’s nothing."

"We are villagers and one community. If we don’t support each other, then who should we support?"

"You have done so much for us. We feel ashamed!"

’At least they know that!’ she couldn’t help but hmphed in her mind as her smile still remained pasted on her face before continuing. "I have two major announcements to make since everyone, at least the adults, are all here!"

Upon hearing that, everyone’s ears twitched, eager to hear what she wanted to say and so were their sparking eyes. whenever Calista speaks about announcements, something good always happens. So, they were curious and anticipatory of the blessings that she was going to bestow on them this time around.

Seeing everyone’s attentive and eager for more, Calista interlaced her fingers together as she propped her elbows on the table, ignoring the warning glares she was getting from the female elders who knew nothing but to maintain rules and customs.

How can someone remind her of something like that in her house?

Ignoring the women, Calista continued with her speech once again. "The first announcement is that I am pregnant. It’s now over twelve weeks," revealing the secret she had been keeping for more than three months.

"What?"

"Oh, my goddess, is this true?"

The villagers’ response was mixed, but some of the faces among Diana’s crew didn’t look particularly well. A few of them had their fists clenched and teeth gritted, unwilling to accept this news.

A few of the bold villagers found their voices and started raising questions at Calista.

"Calista, congratulations. I am very happy for you."

"Madam, is your husband still away? At this moment, you need him by your side?"

"Is it for Master Orson?"

Maybe it was because she had been so nice recently that people were less scared of asking some disturbing questions.

Otherwise, how could they be so bold to ask her such kind of questions?

Susan, sitting a few seats from Calista, looked worriedly at her friend, checking her expression and worried about how she might burst angrily at any second.

How could these people ask such questions?

Even Ba and Ma Susan were taken aback by such questions, but it was too late already. The questions had been fired already, and no one stopped it.

It wasn’t that people were blind; they were just too scared to ask some questions. Even though they lived in such backward places, it didn’t necessarily mean that they were fools.

So, when these bold people, fearless of Calista’s wrath, asked such questions, they all prayed earnestly for her to answer even if she would yell at them later. Getting some answers was better than getting nothing, after all.

What everyone didn’t expect at this moment was how Calista had been preparing herself ever since Orson took the carriage and left for this moment.

After nursing herself and carrying her baby for three months, all the affection she felt for the man was completely gone. In her mind, the man was just a sperm donor, who came to help her prove to the world that she wasn’t a hen that couldn’t lie eggs, as others accused her of all these years.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

The familiar sound of the cup being hit filled the place once again, prompting everyone to shut their mouths.

Those who had asked earlier were sweating coldly, chiding themselves for being so bold as if they were possessed for a moment to ask such questions.

They didn’t know how Calista was going to respond, so they were quite fearful.

Calista, however, fooled all of them, as she didn’t burst out with anger as they all expected but laughed instead, to the extent that tears were streaming down her cheeks.

Honestly, it was pretty good to find such bold people like these. They make her feel human and not invincible like people always portray her as.

As she laughed, no one dared to laugh along. Those who laugh like this are the deadliest. If you join, you might end up as the sacrificial lamb, and no one is willing to be one.

After the laugh, Calista picked a cup of water and moistened her throat before coughing, drawing everyone’s attention back to her once again.

"Don’t panic. This lady is a mother, and won’t dare do anything over the top!" with a playful tone, she said that making those who were clutching their hearts in their hands sigh with relief.

"I understand where you are coming from, so I will answer you. However, let this be the first and last time you ask me such a question. I don’t want to hear them ever again!" with a smile that didn’t look like one on her face, Calista politely said to the villagers.

And those who heard it felt shivers down their spines. They couldn’t help but feel their backs drenching with sweat.

Such a threat sounded more lethal than when one was using a loud voice. It sounded scary to the ears.

Fortunately, Calista continued, giving the villagers some answers that made them forget about the scariness of the threat in a matter of seconds.

"Master Orson is my husband and the father of my child. This lady would never climb over the wall and bring disgrace to the family or rather to my name!" letting out a scoff, she said. "My name is pretty too important to drag it into the mud like that."

There was no such thing that she respected than her name, though at times she always finds herself in difficult times.

Calista Solace was a name she gave herself after deliberating while traveling to many worlds. She wasn’t even sure how many years combined that would be, but what she knew was that she would never let any harm fall on that name, ever.

Of course, there were times when she found herself in tricky situations which couldn’t be helped, like falling for an older married man and getting married to him for five years.

Getting widowed and being called a jinx just because she didn’t have children during her marriage. This wasn’t something that she asked for herself or wanted. It couldn’t be avoided.

However, actions like cheating on one spouse, that was something that she couldn’t do.

It wasn’t just unreputable to the surrounding people, but to her as well. It was very shaming and embarrassing; she didn’t dare even imagine what it would be like to be a cheating scumbag.
