Chapter 120: Chapter 120: A BETTER LIFE FOR EVERYONE!
"Life can be pretty when not just one, but everyone is living okay and better lives!" Calista said with a bright smile as she pictured what that life would be like.
Diana, hearing that answer, felt like her ears were playing and tricking her. Were there still people like Calista in this world who thought of the masses and not of themselves?
She didn’t believe it.
However, Calista wasn’t done as she said next, the smile ever-present on her face.
"Maybe it’s because I am growing up and maturing with each passing day. Otherwise, if it was before, I wouldn’t have bothered. As long as I live well, why should I be bothered with other people?" with a self-deprecating smile on her face, Calista said, feeling a bit melancholic.
Everyone’s gaze was on her as she said this. Suddenly the place was filled with silence, everyone consumed with their thoughts.
"But then I realized that as long as I am the only person living well in this place, then I can never be fully happy!" as if a sudden realization struck her, Calista said as a smile blossomed on her face, contradictory to the previous smile she wore.
"When others are poor and stuck deep knee in poverty, even when I catch a fish, a fish that anyone can catch in that river, all tongues would wag endlessly.
If I roast corn and add a sprinkle of salt, someone would talk and it would look as if I am eating an imperial feast when all I am doing is eating something that everyone in this village can afford. We all just need to go to the field and pluck one corn and roast it to eat. Very simple.
But that can’t happen. After all, I am richer than that person and everything I do looks as if I am boasting.
I am not one to suffer losses or make my life so miserable just to make people happy. I have suffered enough at a young age that I refuse to suffer in old age.
So, I will live however I want, eat the kind of food I want, wear what I want and above all spend as much as I want. After all, I am earning it and never once did I commit anything illegal to have it.
Of course, this was my mentality, and it is still!" with a smile on her face, Calista spoke as if she was reminiscing, her words striking a chord in the listeners’ hearts.
Taking a deep breath as she reached for the water bottle just next to her, she continued, "Since I was capable of living such a life. At some point as I looked around, after years of being the centre and topic of the many gossips around here, I ....." she didn’t say anything further as she brought the water bottle to her mouth and took several gulps of water to quench her thirst.
Gudung. Gudung.
She drank the water thirstily and smacked her lips when she was done.
Unaware of how people were looking at her, she closed the water bottle and continued, her mind completely to the story than the people listening to it.
"Since I could do this for myself, I thought how nice it would be if everyone’s life became better like mine!" with a sincere expression on her face, she voiced out her thought, something that was brought to her attention when she planned a future with Orson in it.
She didn’t want people at that time to keep on clamoring and being curious about him. After all, she didn’t have much information herself. This was someone she blackmailed and taken advantage of to be in a marriage with her.
And with the conditions she brought forth, even Ba Susan didn’t ask more questions. Her method worked perfectly. But this was the truth that couldn’t be said out loud.
Since with time, seeing how happy everyone was and how friendly they have become because of the several projects she introduced, she sincerely began to think for the villagers rather than for her selfish reasons.
"When everyone has money in their pockets, food on their plates and a roof over their heads, wouldn’t our lives be better?
Why should only those living in towns or cities be the ones who are prosperous and not us living in villages?
Who said that the intelligent ones are found in big places and not backward places like ours?
Anyway, it got me thinking hard and since my head was full of ideas; I was like, let’s go ahead and do it! I have money, and will never lack it, a fact that I can’t even deny!" looking a bit smug, Calista shamelessly said, but no one refuted her. After all, that was truthfully a fact that everyone knew and couldn’t deny.
"Since I have the money, let me help my fellow villagers to make money as well. We can all benefit from this and even if there is a loss, it can be incurred by me alone. As long as the villagers are happy and living well, then I can consider it to be a worthy transaction!" With a smile on her face, Calista earnestly spoke, looking very relaxed. "That’s the least I can do for the people who took me in when I didn’t have a place to go!"
Her words made people who were listening, especially those who live in Cropville Village, feel melancholic and touched.
They understood pretty much what Calista was talking about. Something in the past that was never brought up and yet remembered.
Something that always pops up when people are gossiping and cursing her behind her back and yet in front of her, couldn’t be said.
When she was at her lowest, trying to mourn her dead husband and couldn’t stay in the village she stayed and lived in for five good years, it was Ba Susan and the Cropville villagers who took her in.
So, what was surprising with her decision to uplift the village in any way necessary?
Just consider this her repayment for their hospitality and generosity.
At least in the five to six years she had been living in the village, not even once did anyone come to her, forcing her to leave.
These people could talk behind her back numerous times, but not one of them had the audacity or vile intentions of kicking her out and making her homeless.
So why can’t she pay them back for such a good deed?
She didn’t know what the future entails and what it would bring. But for now, she was going to follow this and do her best to make everyone’s lives better.
Her current deeds might generate karma for her future generations.
Who knows?
