Chapter 119: SETTLING THE GUESTS

Chapter 119: Chapter 119: SETTLING THE GUESTS

The news that Calista returned quickly spread through the village. By the time the carriages passed through the village heading towards the factory area; the villagers swarmed the area, making Calista speechless and dumbfounded by the villagers’ actions.

However, because there hadn’t been a case in the village of receiving twenty carriages in one day and with city folks, she decided to pretend like she wasn’t seeing them.

At this moment, she was walking with Susan, Mammy Lena and Diana, leading the carriages.

Since the dorms were finished, Calista didn’t have a place to put all these people and their luggage. But the factory and the dorms have a lot of space despite the lack of furniture.

Besides, as wandering merchants, they were used to harsh conditions, so there wasn’t any issue with letting them sleep on the floor. At least they will have four walls and a roof over their heads.

The walk to the dorms wasn’t that tiring, and shortly, they arrived at the place.

It was the first time in weeks since Calista had seen the site and seeing it again; she felt emotional.

This was one of her babies. One, she was going to nurture and let the village soar crazily in the future.

The factory was a distance away from the dorms and it looked bigger than the dorms in terms of width.

The dorms on the other end, to accommodate more people at once and save land at the same time, she chose to build two two-story buildings with spacious rooms.

At first, she wanted to have three-story buildings, but her trust in the masons wasn’t that strong. If they try that building and it isn’t as strong as she wanted at the end of the day, won’t she become a murderer if an accident happens and people are inside?

Fortunately, even up close, the buildings looked sturdy, so there seemed to be nothing much to worry about.

Before settling the guests, Calista and the other four entered the dorm building to take a closer look at how the dorms turned out to be.

The dorms were both two floors high. With each floor having ten large-sized rooms. Each room was planned in a way that it would accommodate eight people. Each person would have a single bed and a cabinet for storing clothes.

Since the dorms weren’t like home, the staff would have to suffer a bit. What was important in the end was having a roof over their heads in the end.

So, each floor could accommodate eight people and each dorm one hundred and sixty people. She made sure to think and plan for the future. With enough space to let over three hundred people stay and yet work for her; Calista wouldn’t need to worry about hiring people from afar.

There were two kitchens to cater to the two dorms. One was going to be used for cooking and the other for storage.

After checking the dorms, she assigned Diana’s people to one dorm. They could stay in whatever room they wanted. After all, there wasn’t any furniture to speak of placed there yet.

As for the issue of food, she had discussed it with Diana and the other was willing to pay for all costs. Calista wasn’t so close to Diana to the extent of bearing enormous costs such as feeding these people for goodness how long they were planning to stay.

Won’t she go broke by feeding the masses for that long?

She might as well donate some food to the village than feed a rich person for free.

However, for the first day, welcoming these people to her abode wouldn’t hurt. So, all expenses were on her.

So, after settling Diana and her people, Calista brought her own people back to her house and this time Ba and Ma Susan joined her.

The sun was setting, and she didn’t have much time to chat as she had so much to prepare.

With all hands on deck, Calista had everyone help her carry the ingredients for dinner to the restaurant. She had to feed fifty people from Diana’s side, plus her own. So, the big pots were coming in handy at this moment.

Her personal kitchen couldn’t handle such intensity at all.

With everything carried to the restaurant using one of the carriages she owned, Calista felt like a few years had been stripped from the original. Fortunately, she won’t be the one cooking, otherwise she would go crazy.

At the restaurant, Calista didn’t need to cook. There was Susan who had gotten more proficient in cooking the way Calista loved and Ma Susan, who was helping on the side.

Apart from these two, there were the servants which Calista purchased from the city. Those five were helping as well.

As for her, she was busy chatting with Diana and her few friends who had followed her to the restaurant since they were too bored to remain in the dorms.

Diana found Calista’s preferences very disturbing and confusing, actually. Especially when she looked at the restaurant, which was built in the middle of nowhere if she was to be honest.

Most villagers were peasants. That was a fact that couldn’t be refuted at all. They didn’t have a lot of money to waste, especially on food when they could just go home and cook whatever they wanted or what they had.

They didn’t have any extra money to spend on luxuries. Which was why it would take years for them to buy new clothes, fabrics, or anything that they consider luxurious.

It was already a luxury to send a son to school, although it has been getting better lately. Despite being poor, peasants were doing their best to have at least one scholar in the family. They couldn’t have the whole generations suffering in the fields, or hunting for a living.

As for girls, it was a waste of time to send them to school. The fact that they were born, raised and fed was already a lot. Being considered passersby as they would one day marry their husbands’ families, the families found it very heart-wrenching to spend money on them.

As long as they are well enough to marry off when they are of age, then their job is done.

People with such a mentality, how could they have money to spend on their bellies?

If it was a town or a city, Diana wouldn’t think that much. After all, there were slightly richer people there. People who are willing to spend some money to make their lives better than before.

With so much query and curiosity filling her mind, she couldn’t help but ask Calista a question. "Sister, why did you open a restaurant here?" eager to learn the answer, no matter what.

And when she received the answer, she looked up at the sky and began to ponder about life.
