Chapter 46: It’s A Bet On Fate
Loui and Pierre peeked at her, wondering why Olive was the only one she had responded to so far.
"Next is..." Draven pointed at the poker-faced guy who stood beside Olive. "Prince. He is the second rook, and his ability is invisibility. Oh, he only speaks French as well, but he understands basic English."
"Ravi de vous rencontrer, ma dame," the young man, Prince, greeted emotionlessly.
His ethereal white hair was tied into a short bun, leaving a few strands out. His reddish lips were a bit thin, and his silvery eyes glistened with no sentiment. He was very tall and lean in comparison to Olive.
Avelina nodded at him with a smile on her face, not sure how to respond to him. He looked tired and sort of pissed. His eyes were lazily hanging low.
"He is not tired or annoyed, Avelina. That is his normal expression," Draven, who could tell what was going on in her mind, clarified.
Avelina glimpsed him, suddenly realizing that their expressions had a bit of a similarity. The only difference was that Draven always looked rather uninterested and neutral, while Prince’s expression was more of "I am tired, pissed, and too lazy to speak. Don’t talk to me."
Draven moved on, saying, "This is Lucien. She is a werewolf and a knight. She doesn’t really have an ability since she is of a different race, but she does possess something that is like an ability."
"She had trained her body to the point that it became immune to any sort of poison, thus, she has developed the intelligence and passion to concoct any form of poison and even make a recipe of her own. They call her a poison master."
"At your service, my lady." Lucien smiled pleasantly.
Avelina acknowledged with a charming smile. "Nice to meet you."
"The last one here is Ava." Draven pointed at the white-haired girl. "She is the second knight and Prince’s younger sister. Her ability is manipulation."
He proceeded to explain, "She can talk you into doing anything, whether you wish to or not, so long as she pleases to do so. You have to be very strong-willed to fight her lip service."
"You are very beautiful and lovely, my lady," the young woman, Ava, with waves of white hair, complimented. Her silvery eyes, just like Princes’, glistened with excitement.
"Thank you," Avelina beamed. She did not expect the compliment.
They all settled down and continued their conversations. Avelina got to find out as well that Olive was the one who helped out at the ceremony, thus preventing her death earlier than it could have come.
Olive, on the other hand, still felt guilty about the incident. He believed he could have prevented more, including Draven’s injury, had he completely carried out his job. He stood up from his chair and bowed his head apologetically.
"My apologies, Don. I failed to complete my task."
Draven was surprised by Olive’s apology and said, "No, you did carry out your task. The turn of events was not your fault. If you hadn’t complied, the consequences would have been huge and hard to deal with."
Olive tightened his fists and took a deep breath.
Loui, who was staring at him, grabbed his hand and sat him down. He shifted his attention to Draven and asked, "How are you now, Don?"
Draven replied, "I’m okay."
Although Loui was curious enough to want to inquire about the bizarre delay in the healing of his injury at the ceremony, he did not go forward with it. He didn’t think it was necessary to ask, nor did he expect that Draven would have an answer.
Draven abruptly stood up from his seat. He reached out his hand for Avelina and pulled her up from the chair.
"I will be taking my leave now. All of you should take care, especially you, Loui." His face was impassive.
"Take care, Don." Loui, Olive, and the rest spoke in unison.
"Merci," with that being said, Draven exited the mansion with Avelina.
Olive, Lucien, and the rest peered at their fading silhouettes. The second they were out of sight, Loui turned to Olive.
He deliberated for a moment and asked, "Olive, did you notice something different about our boss?"
"Huh?" Olive was puzzled. He did not understand the context of such a sudden question.
"Didn’t you notice the light in his eyes?" Loui’s smile stretched from ear to ear.
Olive raised her brows at him. "What about it?"
"It’s different, you bird brain!" Loui aggressively snapped his finger at his face. "I can’t really explain it, but it’s different and sort of a bit lively, especially when he looks at Lady Avelina. It’s as if those constant harsh emotions in his eyes disappeared."
"Also, don’t you think he was being a little too nice to us today? Don literally never converses that much with us unless it has to do with business. And he answers with little to no words," he added.
Pierre, who was listening, gave an affirmative answer before Olive could respond, "True, I noticed it too."
"But I don’t think it is in the way you are thinking, Loui." He went ahead to elucidate, "Our Don is never going to fall in love with another woman. He is incapable of doing so. It is not at all possible in your wildest dreams, and I am a hundred percent sure of that!"
"Anything is possible." Loui shrugged with wrinkled brows.
"Not this one, Loui." Pierre shook his head at him. "Don loves his late wife way too much, and don’t forget that he is enduring all this and fighting because of her. Oh, and before it slips your mind, remember that he promised to bring her back."
Loui gave up at this point. He could not deny that Pierre’s words were very right.
"I believe the light in his eyes has changed because he is no longer alone in that hell of a royal mansion. Lady Avelina is like a friend and a companion," Pierre concluded.
He slapped the back of Loui’s head before walking past him.
"He is correct," Lucien concurred and walked off.
"Je suis d’accord," Prince agreed as well and strolled off.
"I agree that anything is possible, so we’ll see." Olive stuffed his hands into the pocket of his coat and sauntered to his room.
A deep breath fled Loui’s nose, and he smiled. "We’ll see. It’s a bet on fate."
