A Game Of Chess With A Vampire -
Chapter 44: For What?
Chapter 44: For What?
Draven arched his brow at him, amused. Valentine was smart and quick-witted. He was the only living creature he had known capable of figuring him out—the only one who did not conclude he was mentally ill.
If he was cautious of anyone in the family, it was only Valentine. Somehow, even he feels that he has yet to completely figure this boy out.
They gazed at each other, and Draven abruptly shrugged. "Nothing."
"What?!" Valentine was bewildered. He fluttered his eyes in bafflement and laughed, confused. "What do you mean by "Nothing?"
"Nothing means nothing, Valentine! You are disturbing me!" Draven scowled at him and walked past him to leave.
But Valentine stepped in front of him, stopping him.
"You just lied, frère," he said.
Draven glowered. "I did not. I have no plan, at least not yet, so my response to you was not a lie."
Valentine blinked his eyes and clapped in sudden agitation.
"You are the most fascinating person I have ever known in my life!" He laughed heartily and proceeded to pull off the loose thread on Draven’s shirt.
"Whether you have a plan or not, YET! I will be waiting for the cinematic show you will display. I am so thrilled already!" His body shivered, and he strolled off with a face full of smiles.
Draven stared at his disappearing back and shrugged, unbothered. He returned to his room and shut the door behind him.
He walked to the bed and gently tapped Avelina, who was fast asleep to wake her up.
"Avelina, wake up."
Avelina fluttered her eyes open and turned around to look at him. She immediately jolted up on the bed in a sitting position and asked, "What happened?"
"Oh, no, no, no, nothing happened." Draven shook his head at her. "I just want you to go somewhere with me."
"Oh..." Avelina batted her lashes, still feeling sleepy. "Where?"
"Well, there are some people that I would love to introduce you to. I wanted to do so at the ceremony, but... things didn’t go as planned," Draven responded with an apologetic expression. "My apologies for ruining your sleep."
Avelina quickly shook her head at him. "No, it’s fine."
She climbed down from the bed and moved to change into a nice outfit.
Draven did the same after a quick, fresh bath and walked out, draped in a white fitted turtleneck made of soft cashmere and well-ironed trousers. He finished the look with a perfectly tailored coat made of the finest material.
His dark curly hair was, as usual, tied up in a loose, neat bun, leaving just a few strands out.
Avelina, who was gazing at him, couldn’t help but blink her eyes in awe. This man’s clothing may always come in white, but she has to admit that his taste in clothing and style of dressing was just... really nice. Simple and classy.
"Don’t you feel cold?" Draven abruptly asked, snapping her out of her drifting thoughts. She wore a cream-colored cocktail dress, which accentuated her curves, but he didn’t think that it would be enough to keep her warm.
Avelina blinked her lashes and slowly nodded with an awkward smile on her reddish lips.
Draven turned around and grabbed a coat from his closet. He helped her wear it and buttoned it up for her. He took a step back to scrutinize her from head to toe, and a half smile emerged on his face.
"You look pretty." He gave her a thumbs up, but his smile fell when he noticed her curly hair, which was combed but unbalanced.
"What are you doing?" Avelina inquired in confusion at the sight of him grabbing a brush from the table.
"Some strands are sticking out, and your hair is not well balanced," Draven began to brush her hair as he responded.
A deep sigh exited Avelina’s mouth, and her expression changed. "I am wondering if I should have it straightened out."
"No, no, no!" Draven immediately stopped and looked at her face. "Repeat after me; you look beautiful with your curls."
"I look beautiful with my curls," Avelina repeated after him.
"Good! There is no need for you to straighten it out, okay?" Draven smiled slightly at her.
He dropped the brush once he was done and grabbed his glasses from the mini table close to the bed.
"Let’s go." He wore his glasses.
Avelina smiled.
"Thank you," she said.
Draven gazed into her soft eyes for a moment before slowly asking, "For what?"
"For combing my hair," Avelina replied.
"Oh..." Draven was surprised. He didn’t think that required her gratitude. "You’re welcome."
"Now, come, let’s go." He grabbed her hand, and they exited the room.
They arrived outside at the large compound and approached the brand new-looking Rolls Royce boattail.
Draven opened the door and waved for Avelina to come. Avelina hurried to him.
"Get in." He gestured.
Avelina sat down inside the car, and he leaned in to help her put her seatbelt on.
Avelina, on the other hand, was secretly examining the luxurious interior of the car. She drew a soft breath, very sure that the car was worth millions of euros.
Draven shut the door and walked to the other side. He sat down in the driver’s seat and started the car.
He put his seatbelt on, looked behind him, and slowly took a reverse before driving out of the compound onto the road.
A soft, cool breeze rustled the leaves of the towering trees that lined the street, casting long shadows on the cobbled pathways below.
Avelina watched as the gas lamps flickered to life, their lovely glow illuminating the surroundings.
She fiddled with her dress in boredom and lifted her head. She glanced at the vampires walking down the streets and cocked a brow.
The vampires were clad in regular clothings, completely dissimilar to the way the royalties dressed, precisely the ladies. They were engaged in lively conversations and some walked arm in arm, while some danced under the moonlight for some change from pedestrians.
The buildings she saw were a fusion of gothic architecture and modern elegance, quite similar to the design of the royal mansion. They had soaring spires and ornate ironwork that seamlessly blended with contemporary designs. A few Ivy-clad facades added a touch of natural beauty.
As the car drove past a giant bookstore near a coffee shop with gas lamps fixed on either side of it, Avelina’s eyes widened, the cold breeze vigorously fluttering her hair.
"It’s...beautiful!" A light of awe flickered softly in her large hazel eyes.
Draven glanced at her. "What are you talking about?"
He was curious.
