A Game Of Chess With A Vampire
Chapter 325: Why Did He Let Me Stay?

Chapter 325: Why Did He Let Me Stay?

Abruptly, Valentine turned around and stormed towards Avelina.

"Sister-in-law, would you mind leaving the room?"

"What?" Avelina was taken aback. "Why?"

Valentine took a deep breath and rubbed his temple, suddenly feeling heavily stressed.

"I will explain to you, but please come with me first. You can stay in the next room, just until Draven is treated completely."

"But Valentine—"

"Please, sister-in-law." Valentine looked at her with pleading eyes. "Come with me first."

Avelina was reluctant, but she agreed to leave in the end. Valentine lifted her off the couch into his arms and walked towards the door. He exited the room and began to approach the next room, which Santino had already unlocked.

"What is going on, Valentine?" Avelina was worried and confused. "Is something wrong?"

Valentine nodded his head at her. "Yes, something is wrong, but it’s not your fault."

"My fault? What do you mean?" Avelina was even more bemused.

Valentine opened the door of the room and stepped inside. He shut it and walked over to the bed to carefully sit her down. Once he did, he took a seat at the edge of the bed.

"I’m not sure if I should be telling you this," he said.

Avelina glowered at him. "What do you mean?"

Valentine glanced at her and asked, "Has my brother ever told you something about him having a weakness?"

"Weak...ness?" Avelina cocked an eyebrow, quite perplexed. She shook her head. "No. He hasn’t."

"What is this thing about weakness? I am confused—"

"You are his weakness, Avelina," Valentine cut her off, saying.

"I didn’t want to tell you this because I feared for his safety, but I think you should know now."

Avelina gazed at him and blinked, still perplexed. "I don’t...understand." She shook her head. "What do you mean? What are you talking about?"

Valentine let out a soft breath. He looked at her and proceeded to explain.

"Sister-in-law, do you remember when you’d newly came to this place? That day at the ceremony?" he inquired.

Although Avelina was not sure why he was asking, she nodded, replying, "I do."

"Do you know the reason why he didn’t heal after he took that attack for you?" Valentine further queried.

Avelina shook her head. "No. Why?"

"It’s because of you," Valentine answered.

"Me?" Avelina looked at him as though he were a madman. How could she be the reason? She’d never hurt Draven.

Valentine smiled at her, amused. "You see, sister-in-law, even he and I do not understand why and how you are his weakness. You are just a human after all, so it was really bizarre of you to have that sort of effect on a vampire such as my brother."

"I was baffled at first, wondering why my brother hadn’t healed after a minute, and so on. But I realized it was because of you when he’d walked twenty feet away from you. I glimpsed his injury, and I could see it healing, but the second you came closer to him, he stopped healing again."

He continued, "He also didn’t heal in the car because of you. Why did you think I asked you to give us a private moment back then? It wasn’t because I had so much to tell my brother, but it was because I wanted to confirm if I was right or wrong."

"And indeed...I was right." He glanced at her. "If you’d stayed back there, his bleeding would never have stopped, and he might have died due to blood loss. You know how important blood is to us. We can’t survive without it, lest we lose so much."

Avelina quickly covered her mouth with her palm. To think she could have unintentionally killed the man she loved and would probably never even realize that it was her fault,

Would he have healed at the ring if she’d stayed away from him? But that wasn’t possible—at least not with the poison. He would still need immediate treatment, regardless....right?

She took deep breaths and lifted her eyes to look at Valentine. "Did Draven know about this?"

Valentine nodded at her. "Yes, he knew."

"Then why did he keep me around? Why did he let me stay with him even after knowing this?" Avelina was now beyond bewildered. How could he have still allowed her to be with him even though he knew his life was in danger with her?

Valentine shrugged. "He trusted you, I suppose. He knew you’d never hurt him."

Avelina’s lashes flickered tiredly as she blinked. She was at a sudden loss for words. It was, but only now did she realize why he’d asked her that question in the beginning.

She’d always wondered why he’d asked her if she would kill him, had the opportunity possibly been given to her.

"Ha! Haha!" Avelina could not help but chortle, cynically amused. "He says he’s not reckless, but he’s been reckless. So reckless!" She tightened her grip on the bed sheet, suddenly feeling like a total piece of crap.

Never would she have imagined that it would be her fault if this man had died. He knew she was a threat to his life, but despite it, he still allowed her to be with him and treated her well.

"Valentine—"

An abrupt knock came at the door, interrupting. At the same time, she and Valentine glanced at the door.

It was Santino. "My lady, Young Master’s treatment has been completed and the room has been cleaned properly. You may return now."

Avelina’s eyes lit up, and a wide smile spread across her face. She turned her attention to Valentine. "Can you take me back?"

Valentine nodded at her and stood up from the bed. He gathered her in his arms and left the room to return to the master bedroom. He pushed open the door and walked inside.

On the bed, Draven lay with his body facing the ceiling. He seemed to still be unconscious, but his wounds were no longer bleeding, making it clear that they had healed quite a bit.

However, he still had bandages all over his body where he had been injured. It had to be there and would probably only be taken off by the next day or the day after.
