Chapter 304: Why Did You Guys Join In?
Olive, who noticed his disrupted composure, pinched between his brows and proceeded to say something to him, but the sudden sight of a bottle that flew out of nowhere and broke on Valentine’s head had him halt with widened eyes.
"Valentine..."
Valentine felt his head quiver at the impact of the bottle that shattered on his head, and he dropped the glass of alcohol. He slowly turned his attention in the direction the bottle flew, and at the sight of the culprit, his eyes darkened.
"You asshole!" He disappeared from his seat at the speed of light and appeared before the middle-aged man. He gripped him by the neck, lifting him and pounding him onto the floor, causing the marble tiles to crack.
Everyone immediately took a step back from him, not even sure what had happened. Apparently, it appeared that the man who threw the bottle had been fighting with someone. However, Valentine could not care less.
He was already provoked by the thought of his father, and the stranger just had to make it even worse by shattering a bottle on his head and not bothering to apologize at the very least.
"Hey!" Another bulky man from the crowd walked out, gripping Valentine by the wrist. He glared at him. "Don’t you dare lay your hands on my boss, otherwise, I will break your frail body, so you can’t walk or move anymore."
Valentine’s expression fell awfully, and he turned his head to glance at the bulky man who towered above him.
"Take. Your. Hands. Off. Me!" he warned.
But the bulky man responded with a scoff and a short laugh. "Kid, I am being nice to you. Apologize to my boss—"
"Leave him alone," Olive, who could already tell how far such a situation might escalate, interrupted, grabbing hold of the man’s wrist.
The bulky man glanced at him. "Who the hell are you?"
"It doesn’t matter," Olive responded. "Just let him go and—"
A punch that sent him flying backward landed on his stomach, causing him to swallow the rest of his words.
Valentine’s eyes widened, and in a sudden rage, he freed his wrist, gripping the man by the head and smashing his face against his bent knee.
"How dare you hurt my only friend?" He slammed the man’s head against the wall, breaking his skull.
And so, a fight completely broke out amongst the crowd, with random strangers joining in and wrecking the whole place. Loui, Lucien, Pierre, Prince, and Ava were no exception. They would never be willing to stand by and watch Olive get hurt, not to mention Valentine, who was in their care.
By the time the ruckus had settled down, they all walked out of the bar with bruises either on their faces or their bodies.
"Why did you guys join in?" Olive, whose forehead was bleeding slowly, asked.
Pierre clicked his tongue at him. "They asked for it. We go in groups, and we stand in groups. Did you think we’d watch you get hurt?"
Olive peered at him and shook his head, unable to argue.
"Also, Valentine is there with us, we wouldn’t let him get hurt." Lucien chuckled.
Ava concurred and looked at Valentine, who had a piece of clothing tied around his bleeding head. She asked, "How are you feeling? Is your head healing?"
Valentine gave a nod.
"Yeah. It’s not too bad. I’ll be just fine by tomorrow."
They all took a deep breath at the same time, raising their heads to look at the sky.
"I’ll be going home now," Valentine said. "See you guys someday again."
Loui nodded, smiling at him. "See you again, Valentine."
"It was nice working with you," Pierre added.
"À bientôt." Prince gave a barely perceptible smile.
Ava and Lucien simply waved at him with huge smiles on their faces. He was completely different from what they had assumed and expected.
"See you later," Olive said, waving his hand at him.
Valentine smiled heartily and turned around, walking off to flag down a cab and return to the royal mansion.
——
Early morning the next day, Avelina, who had taken her bath and dressed herself up, stood by the mirror, gazing at her reflection. She cynically bit her lip, immediately lowering her head as she felt very sorry for her.
I probably shouldn’t have said anything. She tightened her grip on her dress and looked away, a deep breath exiting her nose.
If she hadn’t said anything to him, she would have spared herself such heartache. She would not be standing in front of the mirror at that moment, feeling her heart aching within her.
Whatever! She scoffed, taking a deep breath. Rejection or not, I said how I felt, and that is all that matters.
She consoled herself and exhaled, putting her feet into her slippers. She grabbed her book from the table and left the room to approach the fountain outside the compound.
Avelina wiped off the bench with her handkerchief and sat down, crossing her legs. She flipped open her book, and from where she stopped the last time, she continued, wanting to take her mind off what had happened.
Her eyes moved with each letter on the pages, and as he flipped, she took deep breaths.
"Hello." A voice abruptly sounded.
Snapping back to reality, Avelina quickly raised her head at the sound of the voice, and her eyes fell on none other than Edward, who stood with a warm smile on his face and his arms behind his back.
She blinked. "Hi..."
"May I have a seat?" Edward asked, his tone as polite as ever.
Although Avelina was reluctant, she nodded regardless, giving him enough space on the bench.
Edward exhaled, turning his head to look at her. "How do you feel today? Are you alright?
"Mhm." Avelina nodded, returning her attention to the book she was reading. "And what about you?"
"Oh...? Well, I’m quite alright." Edward smiled, leaning against the back of the bench.
