Chapter 300: You Had No Right!

"What?" Avelina was heavily struck by confusion.

"You cannot be with me, Avelina. I can’t allow you to. You must go back to your family. What you and I made was a deal, and it will be over next week. You will have to go home because I will be giving you your freedom." Draven spoke to her as though wanting to drill that into her head and make her understand.

"We agreed to separate, and we will!"

"W-why?" Avelina could not understand. "You haven’t even gotten what you wanted. Three months wasn’t enough, and you still need me."

"Yes, I still need you. But I can always find another woman to replace you," Draven responded.

Avelina’s heart instantly dropped to her stomach. "Wh...what?"

"Yes. I keep to my words, and I will not go back on them. I promised you your freedom after three months, and I will give it to you. I want you to go back to your family, please," Draven implored.

Avelina frantically shook her head at him.

"I don’t want to! I DON’T WANT TO, DRAVEN! I just want to stay with you. Allow me!"

"No, Avelina. Listen to yourself." Draven grabbed her hand, hoping to calm her down. "You must go. If not for anyone, do it for your mother. She is waiting for you; she wants to see you."

"Wait, what?" Avelina scrunched her face, perplexed. "My mother?"

Draven nodded at her. "Yes. Wouldn’t you want to see her? She really—"

"How do you know my mother, Draven?" Avelina questioned.

Draven blinked his wet eyes nervously and began to dart his gaze around, not sure how to explain it to her.

With each second that passed, Avelina’s expression darkened in realization.

"Did you...did you look into me?"

Draven glanced away from her, not denying it. He was not a liar after all.

Avelina clutched her chest, starting to breathe heavily. "No, no, you wouldn’t do that." She shook her head, unwilling to believe it. "You would never do that, Draven, not without letting me know first."

"You had no right to do that!"

"I’m sorry," Draven apologized. He quickly went ahead to explain, "You weren’t willing to tell me anything, Avelina, so I had no choice but to find your family myself. Your mother really wants to—"

"Just keep quiet for a second, Draven! Stop talking about my mother!!" Avelina bellowed at him, beyond infuriated. "I didn’t want to speak to you about my family when you asked because I had a reason."

"You never should have gone and done this behind my back! All this while, you never even said anything to me about it, but you were willing to send me home, all because my mother wanted to see me! No, that is what you fucking think!"

"It doesn’t even have anything to do with you!" she yelled. "It is only up to me and me alone! You cannot choose for me! "

Draven swallowed hard, anxious. "But it is for you, Avelina! I had to know."

"Do you not understand how lucky you are? What if you stay here with me and something happens to your mother? Do you not realize that there will be no second chance to see her again? Do you not understand that you would never have the chance to—"

"My mother is not YOUR MOTHER, Daven!" Avelina shouted at him, causing him to instantly go silent.

This did not fail to reach the ears of Valentine, Olive, and each and every one of them.

"Oh shit! What is going on? When did this take a ninety-degree turn?" Loui asked.

Valentine furrowed his brows, nervous and confused. "I thought...I thought they were having a good time. Why are they fighting?"

Everyone was just as confused as he was.

Draven rapidly blinked and looked away from her. "Oh..." One could hear sudden pain in his voice.

"I-I didn’t mean that. It is not what you are thin—"

"Take me back. I’d like to sleep." Avelina’s expression was emotionless. Her tone was as cold as ice. "You can replace me with another woman? Go ahead!!"

She turned around and began to storm off, leaving Draven standing under the rain alone and lost.

But...I’m doing it for her. I cannot let her go through what I went through. I would never be able to forgive myself if I took her away from your mother, who has been waiting for you for over a year now. Why can’t she understand me? How can she not see that this is all for her? He inwardly spoke to himself, his eyes distant.

Draven pinched between his brows and quickly hurried after her.

Olive, Valentine, Loui, and the others stood heavily baffled.

"What...just happened?" Lucien asked.

Ava furiously rubbed her eyes just to be sure that what she saw actually occurred. "Everything was going just fine. What did Don do? What was he even talking about? Why didn’t he say yes to her?"

Olive let out a soft breath, glancing at Loui. "This is all my fault."

"Huh?" Loui looked at him.

Olive asked, "Do you remember when we went to Rennes to find Lady Avelina’s family?"

"Yes, I do." Loui gave a nod.

"I told Don about Lady Avelina’s mother and her longing to see Lady Avelina," Olive clarified. "It seems that Don had thought about it and decided to give Lady Avelina her freedom even though he had yet to get what he wanted."

"His Majesty unfortunately postponed the awaited day for the inheritance, and now their deal will be over in a week. But he does not want to hold her back, regardless. We know Don isn’t a man who goes back on his words. The three months are about to be over after all."

Loui frowned. "But Lady Avelina wants to stay with him. Why won’t he let her?"

"Because of her mother," Valentine responded, drawing all attention to himself.

"Huh?" Pierre appeared perplexed.

Valentine shrugged. "Olive did say he told my brother about Avelina’s mother and situation, so obviously he will not allow her to stay with him. He is afraid of what might happen if he holds her back."

"What if Avelina’s mother dies without her seeing her daughter? Anything can happen in a matter of a day, an hour, or even a few seconds. To him, each passing moment mattered, so he wanted to free her as soon as possible. He wants her to go home and see her mother, and honestly, I do understand my brother in this aspect."
