A Game Of Chess With A Vampire -
Chapter 297: Liar!
Chapter 297: Liar!
Avelina blinked her eyes, slowly nodding her head. "Mhm. I feel happy." Her tone was quite cynical.
Draven quietly watched her for a few short seconds before abruptly flicking her forehead.
"Ouch!" Avelina rubbed her forehead and glared at him with her lips puckered. "What was that for?"
"Why are you sad?" Draven raised his brow at her.
Avelina immediately frowned at him. "I’m not...sad." She looked away from him.
"Liar." Draven scoffed, glaring away from her. "I may not understand emotions as much as you do, but that does not mean I cannot tell yours apart. I don’t pay attention to others, but I do to you, Avelina."
"So...I can tell if you are not happy." His tone dropped.
Avelina sat gazing at him, as though she were suddenly stuck in a daze.
Draven took a deep breath, running his fingers through his hair. He had yet to look at her. "There is no need for you to feel sad. I’d love to take you on a date a thousand times if you want. It’d be my pleasure."
He coughed, finally willing to look at her.
The second his eyes met with her gaze, he came to an abrupt stop, confused by the way she was staring at him.
He could glimpse the twinkling light that made her hazel pearls burn even brighter. It felt as though they were saying something to him, but being too ignorant to understand, he had no way of grasping or comprehending what her eyes were relaying.
Ahem! The sudden clearing of the throat from Pierre, who had delivered their dinner, snapped them out of their daze. They glanced at him.
Pierre took a step back once he had served the food and the wine and strolled off to stand with the others.
Avelina looked at the food, and her large eyes widened, her smile immediately stretching from ear to ear.
"These are all my favorite foods!" She was surprised, thus raising her head to glance at Draven.
Draven nodded, reaching over with his hand to pat her head. "Eat as much as you like. Everything is for you."
He folded his arms, and with his legs crossed, he began to watch her, his lips gradually widening in a gentle smile without his notice.
Avelina excitedly picked up a spoon and dug into the food. With just one bite, she shut her eyes, savoring the taste.
"So good!" she squealed in deep exhilaration, throwing her head back and balling her hands in enjoyment.
Draven cackled under his breath, completely enjoying watching her. He tilted his head and stared intently at the way her stuffed cheek moved when she chewed.
Adorable! was the first word he exclaimed inwardly.
He pinched between his brows, lowering his head. "I could probably watch you all day and never get tired of it," he subconsciously said to himself, his voice low and calming.
"Huh?" Avelina, who didn’t really hear him, looked at him with a questioning gaze.
Draven immediately raised his head and smiled warmly at her. "It is nothing. I was just speaking to myself."
"Oh?" Avelina blinked, not very convinced. She asked, "Are you not going to eat?"
Draven shook his head at her. "No. I told you everything was for you. It is all about you, so no, enjoy it, hm?"
Avelina thoughtfully stared at him. She bobbed her head, amused, and continued to eat.
"Avelina, I never told you this, but there was a game that my mother used to play with me when I was six." Draven suddenly began to talk.
Avelina halted eating and focused her gaze on him. "A game? What game?" She dropped her spoon and rested her arms on the table. She supported her chubby cheeks with her palms and began to gaze at him, patiently waiting for him to explain.
Draven smiled at the level of attention she was paying to him, and the urge to pat her head overwhelmed him, but he, however, restrained himself.
He began to elucidate, "So if I recall properly, my mother would have me stand in front of her. Then she would give me a coin. Do you know what she would say to me?"
Avelina shook her head. "What does she say?" She was smiling widely, seeming deeply interested.
"She would tell me that if I closed and opened my eyes, she would make the coin disappear," Draven responded.
Avelina stroked her jaw in deep thought.
"Hmm, isn’t that cheating? I mean, she could hide it before you open your eyes."
"It is not cheating at all, because she does it in a matter of a second," Draven argued with a smile. "I close and open my eyes almost immediately, and it’s gone."
"I would search everywhere for it, even on my mother, but I could never find it. To be honest, I still do not have an idea of how she does it." He shrugged. "But it was very fun. Searching for it would leave me feeling sort of motivated, even though I never find it at the end of the day."
He chortled, amused as he recollected.
Avelina tilted her head, beaming tenderly. "Perhaps your mother was a magician."
Draven glanced at her with a raised brow and laughed. "That is not possible. My mother was just a maid, you know that. Besides, magicians are just trick users, haha."
"Well, it was the only thing I could think of." Avelina laughed with him. "You know—"
Her words came to an immediate halt the second a soft melody began to play in the background. She quickly whipped her head in the direction the sound was coming from.
There, quite far from where they were, along with a few violinists, Valentine sat at the piano, playing a beautiful soft melody in synchronization with the sound of the violin.
Avelina’s eyes lit up and began to sparkle in surprise. She never expected to see Valentine there.
She quickly looked at Draven. "He’s here..."
Draven nodded at her.
"Well, he wanted to be." He beamed slightly.
