Chapter 227: Are You...Serious?
Chapter 227: Are You...Serious?
Avelina continued.
"My father introduced me to this friend of his. Since I was hopeless, he might as well marry me off to him for his benefit." She chuckled. "Of course, I was not willing. It was disgusting, and he looked even worse than my father did. I could not imagine myself being married to somebody who could have a daughter way older than I am."
"He had children too and the worst part about it was that one of them was older than I am. How embarrassing do you imagine that to be?" she questioned Draven, seeming to be venting to him.
Draven extended his hand, gently patting her head. "Continue." He was not exactly sure how to react to such an emotion.
"Well, as I said, I was not willing to marry him, but my father was going to make me do so. What he did was force me to go live with him, even though I had not even married him. He wanted me out of the house as soon as possible," Avelina moved on.
"There was nothing I could do, so I had to live with this man. For the first few days, it was a bit alright. He didn’t do anything to me, and I was planning and trying to figure out a way to leave. But by the next following week, things changed."
"He started to make awful moves towards me that would leave me wanting to puke, and each time I would always fight back, saying "no" repeatedly. It was quite fortunate of me that he didn’t go too far, but you see, that was until one day when he got really angry with me."
Draven crinkled his brows, frowning. "What did he do to you?"
Avelina bit her lower lip and looked away from him, suddenly feeling her eyes getting wet.
"Draven, I think something is in my eyes. I’d like to go to the bathroom." She stood up to leave.
But Draven grabbed her wrist, sitting her down.
He said, "I know that you want to cry. It is very obvious. You have done this before, so I am able to figure it out this time around."
"Avelina..." he mouthed her name, smiling at her as though wanting to comfort her. "I do not know if this is the right thing to say or if this is a way to comfort someone, but...it is okay to cry."
Avelina raised her head, glimpsing him. The bubble of tears in her eyes broke, slipping down her cheek. It was a heartbreaking, silent cry.
Draven tucked her hair behind her ear and gently caressed her cheek, wiping off the line of tears in the process. "Tell me everything. I do want to know a bit more about you. Also, I think you would feel much better if you opened up to someone. It does not have to be me."
"You think so?" Avelina asked, cackling lightly.
"Mhm." Draven nodded at her. "I believe so."
A wide smile emerged on Avelina’s face, and she cleared her throat to continue from where she stopped. "Okay, so as I said, he got very mad at me one day and um...I had refused to give in to what he wanted."
"He had hit me that day, and I fell to the floor. He grabbed hold of me and took the cigarette he was smoking. He began to press it against my back, burning me. The pain was unbearable, and I pleaded with him to stop. I was even willing to do anything so long as he would stop hurting me, but...he was enjoying it. He loved the pain he was inflicting on me. The flare in his eyes made it clear."
"He laughed at himself, telling me how he was going to do so much more. Right there, I knew I was in hell and that I needed to get out as soon as possible. I was not exactly thinking, but I recall grabbing the lantern close to me and smacking it on his head," she explained while gesturing with her hands.
"I stood up and rushed out of the house. I began to run, and I wasn’t even exactly sure how far I had run, but I remember bumping into someone at one point due to severe anxiety and falling over."
She scratched her head, her expression filled with confusion. "I stood up, wanting to step back, but that was when I realized that I couldn’t step further than I already had anymore. It was as if there was a barrier preventing me from doing so. An invisible barrier. It was—"
"Wait..." Draven interrupted her. "You said you bumped into someone before you fell over, right?"
Avelina nodded her head. "Mhm, I did. Why?"
Draven’s face contorted, and he awkwardly smiled at her.
"Avelina, the person you bumped into was a vampire."
"Huh?" Avelina appeared confused.
Draven confirmed his words, "Yes."
"You see, that barrier that separates the human world from my world works in a way that goes like this. As a human, you cannot cross, but if you had contact with a vampire, you would be able to cross it. Whilst we vampires can come and go as we desire."
"What I am trying to say is that when you bumped into that vampire, you accidentally crossed the barrier at the same time he went into the human world. That was the reason why you couldn’t go back anymore when you stood up."
Avelina’s jaw fell slightly, dumbfounded. "Are you...serious?"
"Unfortunately, yes," Draven affirmed.
Avelina slowly nodded her head. "I see. I never knew that." Her brows were crumpled.
Draven smiled, patting her head.
"That is why I have to go with you when our deal is over. So that you can cross the barrier."
Avelina raised her eyes, staring at him. That sentence had suddenly shot her heart like a bullet. It was a reminder—a reminder that she had just one month left before they would separate.
"So that’s how you got these scars." Draven ran his fingers through her hair, grabbed her head, and pulled her into a warm hug.
He cackled. "Now it all makes sense how you ended up in that slave house."
"Although, if your family is this way, may I inquire as to why you want to go back to them?"
