Chapter 158: A Witch’s Talisman
Chapter 158: A Witch’s Talisman
Draven blinked his eyes open.
He glanced at the clock on the wall to see that it had clocked midnight.
I must have slept... He sat up on the bed and tried to get off, but he was pulled back by Avelina, who was tightly holding onto his wrist.
Draven turned his head, and the minute his gaze fell on Avelina, he went dormant.
She was pale! She was not just any kind of pale, but she was as pale as white. She looked as though she were dead.
"Avelina!" He quickly grabbed a hold of her and lifted her into his arms. The moment he felt her temperature, his eyes dilated in fear.
She was as cold as ice!
"Santino!" Draven shouted, causing Santino, who was standing guard by the door, to flinch, startled.
He hurriedly opened the door and entered, only to halt on his step at the sight of Avelina, who looked as pale as a ghost.
What was going on? Was it happening again? But why was she so pale?
He was sure that Mr. Jean never mentioned anything about her turning pale. Also, he cannot hear her screams or glimpse any of the pain she usually goes through every night. It was different this time.
She was not moving, nor could her voice be heard, but she was turning paler and paler with every passing minute.
"Young master..." Santino hurried to the bed.
Draven quickly handed Avelina over to him. "Please hold her! I will be back!"
Without waiting for Santino’s response, he exited the room in the blink of an eye. He was rushing towards Valentine’s quarter.
However, before he could make it to his room, he accidentally bumped into someone, causing her to almost fall to the floor. He reacted immediately, swiftly grabbing her hand.
He pulled her to her feet and looked at her face, only to realize that it was none other than Aurora
Aurora’s expression made it clear that she had felt a bit of pain from the impact. She raised her head and looked at him.
"I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bump into you. Are you okay?" Draven asked. His tone made it obvious that he was quite concerned. He was not oblivious to the pained look on her face.
For reasons he could not explain, Aurora was staring at him as though she were meeting him for the first time. He could see her eyes switch from a glint of surprise to a gleam of disbelief.
Not sure what was going on, he let go of her hand and turned around to leave, but Aurora stopped him.
"Brother-in-law."
Draven was a bit stunned. He halted and glanced at her, perplexed. He had never felt so awkward in his entire life. In so many years since having met and known her, this was the first time Aurora had ever spoken to him. They have never even crossed paths before, let alone spoken.
"What is it? I am in a bit of a hurry, please," he said.
"Is your wife alright?" Aurora asked.
Draven was taken aback.
"What? Why...are you asking?
"I feel like something is wrong," Aurora sincerely said. She sensed that it might have something to do with what she saw Natasha doing earlier.
Draven blinked his eyes.
"She...she is not." He was truthful.
"Oh..." Now Aurora was more than sure that it definitely had something to do with what Natasha had done. She buried whatever it was earlier that morning, and now she met Draven, panicking because his wife was not okay.
She gazed at Draven as though in thought. "Please come with me. I’m not sure if I may be able to help, but maybe I might know why your wife is not doing alright."
For a moment there, Draven was not able to understand what was going on. He needed to leave and meet Valentine, but somehow, his instincts were telling him to follow Aurora.
Her eyes were filled with sincerity, which he had only ever glimpsed in Avelina’s eyes. Could the solution possibly come from her and not even Valentine?
Eventually coming to a decision, Draven followed behind her. He was quite vigilant, still not sure what her motive was.
Aurora, who was walking next to him, could only half smile.
Upon arrival at their destination, she pointed at the fence that Draven had built.
"I am not sure what is going on, but earlier this morning, I saw Natasha bury something here. I know it’s definitely not something good, and she has recently been having lots of trouble with your wife."
"I thought it might have something to do with it since your wife is suddenly ill and—"
Her words were yet to be completed when Draven rushed towards the area where she had pointed. With no doubt, that talisman was definitely buried there! He was sure of this as he could sense an unfamiliar energy oozing from that area.
Quickly, he hurried over, grabbed a shovel that the house Gardner uses, and began to dig up the sandy area.
All the while, Aurora stood there with a concerned expression.
AH!!!
She jolted at the sound of someone’s high-pitched scream. Draven, who was startled as well, flinched.
It was Avelina’s voice, as he knew it too well. What was going on? Was she getting worse? For her to scream that loudly, her condition must have worsened.
He quickened his pace and eventually got to the talisman. It had taken a little bit of time, as he could not tell in which particular part of the area the talisman was buried.
He picked up the talisman, and at the sight of it, Aurora covered her mouth, shocked.
"A witch’s talisman..." she whispered, not even able to say her words out loud.
Draven furiously broke the talisman into pieces and threw it away. He turned around and began to rush to his quarter.
Aurora was worried a bit, but she could not follow him to check on Avelina. Unlike the others, she really doesn’t have any form of hostility towards Avelina. To her, Avelina was a kind human—at least that’s what she had perceived so far.
And her likeness for her rose a bit that day she had actually stood up to Natasha during the jewelry incident. She was glad she was not a pushover like most of the humans she had met. She did not seem too phased either, even though she was completely surrounded by vampires.
With one last glance at the broken talisman, Aurora left the area to return to her quarter. "Do be alright, Avelina," she mumbled to herself while resting her hand against her aching belly.
