Chapter 144: A Narcissist

Chapter 144: A Narcissist

Avelina took a long, deep breath and moved in to embrace him.

"I’m sorry for making you worry so much. I’m sorry."

"You are? Why? Does that mean that you will not—"

"Yes." Avelina nodded at him. "I will wait for you to save me. So don’t waste too much time, okay? Or else, I might not be able to deal with the pain much longer. I think my body will give up first." She let out a soft breath.

Draven sighed lightly and buried his face in her neck, deeply inhaling her scent in relief. "I will," he whispered.

He then asked, "Are you cold?"

Avelina nodded. "A little bit."

Draven pulled away. He took his coat off and wrapped it around her. Then, carefully, he lifted her into his arms and stood up to his feet.

"Do you want to go to the pavilion with me? I’ll feed you. You must eat, okay? I don’t want you to get sick."

Avelina gave a nod and wrapped her arms around his neck. He left the room for the pavilion and walked up the stairs.

He slightly bent down to sit her down on the chair opposite his, but Avelina shook her head.

"Let me sit beside you, Draven." She looked at him.

"Oh..." Draven appeared a bit surprised, as he knew she liked sitting on the chair opposite him.

He had Santino move the chair, then he sat her down. As he took a seat beside her, he dismissed Santino.

The maids in waiting set the table with different sets of dishes, and as they made his coffee, Draven peeked at Avelina.

Regardless of the fact that she had no appetite, he could still glimpse the sparkles in her pupils. That was how much she loved to eat.

With a gentle smile on his lips, he ruffled her hair and kissed her forehead.

Avelina was flabbergasted and stunned by the gesture. She fluttered her lashes and raised her eyes to look at him. He was smiling at her.

"Do you feel better?" Draven asked, his gaze filled with gentle care.

Avelina could not respond, as she appeared to be in a momentary daze.

Such a simple gesture, yet something about it... had her heart pounding in her ears—something about it made her feel in a type of way she could not recognize.

This was not the first time she had received a kiss on the forehead, and neither was he the first, but something about it was different. She could not explain what it was, but she could feel it had sparked something within her.

Not just that, but she noticed that his smile was much better and more genuine. It no longer seemed awkward, and it finally looked as though he had gotten comfortable with smiling. Although she had never seen him smile at anyone else. It was just... to her.

Draven was starting to get a bit worried. "Avelina...are you okay?"

As if snapping back to her senses, Avelina shook her head. "Y-yes. I am okay," she beamed.

Draven patted her head and adjusted his glasses that rested on the bridge of his nose.

"What do you want to eat?" he asked.

Avelina glanced at the table. She pointed at the pain perdu with a smile.

"Okay." Draven began to feed her while gazing at her with kind eyes.

Even though she didn’t have an appetite, Avelina still enjoyed the breakfast as much as she could.

The maids in waiting, who stood by the side, glanced at each other with dreamy eyes. They deeply sighed, a bit moved, as they had never seen their young master care for someone in such a way.

"He must love her a lot," one of them whispered to the latter, who stood closer to her.

The latter nodded, concurring. "Indeed. They are so lovely together, even though she is human."

They heaved a soft sigh.

Adam approached Valentine’s door. He knocked.

"Come in," Valentine permitted.

Adam opened the door and stepped in. He took a quick bow and proceeded to make his report.

"There was nothing I could find," he said.

Valentine frowned and turned to look at him. "What do you mean?"

"I waited and I watched her, but she didn’t make a move. She hasn’t left her room either," Adam replied.

Valentine’s frown deepened.

"Could she possibly be considering whether to do it or not?"

"I think so." Adam nodded.

"Hmm, if she chooses the latter, it will be a big problem. Avelina’s chance of surviving will be reduced to ten percent," Valentine muttered, deep in thought.

"Shall I keep watch on her?" Adam asked.

Valentine glanced at him. "Not exactly. But I want you to stay on the lookout. My brother wants to handle everything by himself, so I just need you to be there in case anything goes wrong."

"Understood." Adam nodded and turned around to leave the room; however, thinking of something, he halted. "May I ask you something, young master?"

"Go ahead." Valentine raised his brow.

Adam cleared his throat. "Why are you helping Lady Avelina?"

Valentine pondered for a few seconds before shrugging.

"Nothing really. I just do not believe she has to die, at least not by Natasha. She hasn’t done anything wrong to deserve it."

"I don’t like Natasha, she’s narcissistic. But I like Avelina, so why would I let a narcissist kill her?" He cackled.

"I understand, young master. But is Lady Natasha really a narcissist?" Adam inquired.

Valentine began to laugh in amusement. "Have you not seen her behavior?"

"Do you not see how she treats my idiotic brother, who does not realize he is dumb? Natasha thinks too highly of herself. She craves admiration and attention from everyone, including my other sisters-in-law and even my father. She believes everyone, including her husband, is inferior to her. Aren’t those the literal traits of a narcissist?"

Adam flickered his eyes.

"Why do you think she hates Avelina so much?" Valentine questioned.

Adam tilted his head to think. He shook his head after a moment. "I do not know."
